Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: The Sandman Date: 09 Jan 11 - 06:08 PM I thought Pele was a fine player, I am sure Big Tim was as well, and Archie Wilson and Johnny McHugh ,RIP all. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: GUEST Date: 09 Jan 11 - 04:54 AM Dear Martin, Thanks for replying. Sorry to hear about Big Tim. Having read the obit. he sounds like a great guy. Johnny also no longer with us. They obviously knew each other back in Duntocher Hibs days. Eileen |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: MartinRyan Date: 08 Jan 11 - 07:05 PM GUESTEileen I'm afraid Big Tim passed away just over a year ago - sadly missed. Click here to see his obituary thread. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: GUEST Date: 08 Jan 11 - 06:59 PM Re message from Big Tim.... I see you mention wee Johnny McHugh. Long time ago I see - 2004. Did you know Johnny well? I am his sister (Eileen) Would like to hear from you. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: Big Tim Date: 03 Feb 04 - 06:50 AM Bigotry was one thing you could never accuse Ally of. I do tho hate the expression "the beautiful game" - speaking with all the authority of an an ex-Junior!. It's no more "beautiful" than any other game: that was a term dreamt up by Pele, the most oevrrated player in history. I've seen better players playing for Duntocher Hibs - Archie Wilson and wee Johnny McHugh, for example. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: GUEST,Van Date: 02 Feb 04 - 02:29 PM Football is only the culture of a small part of Scotland. In the Borders we play rugby and in the Highlands we play shinty. In the central belt people play football in order to wallow in their religious bigotry. The clubs not involved in this have few fans willing to pay for a ticket and the stadiums are half empty at best. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: GUEST,Diva Date: 02 Feb 04 - 01:25 PM Ally was a very important part of Scottish culture. He was a superb manager at Ayr and his time as manager of the Scottish team in the late 1970's was the stuff of legend. okay..I know we didn't win the world cup but he was so inspiring that we really thought we could. He was the consumate professional whether he was playing or managing and had a deep and abiding love for the beautiful game. Condolences to his family. Kathy(from Ayr) |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: Liz the Squeak Date: 02 Feb 04 - 10:49 AM Would this be the Ally of Ally's Army, a truly dreadful record produced when the Scotish Hordes took on the world at football? There is a musical connection to everything, you just have to work out the seven steps. LTS |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: alanabit Date: 02 Feb 04 - 10:43 AM Nothing to do with music indeed. However, they were both tough old men who brought a lot of optimism and cheer to their fans. Stokoe memorably won the FA Cup with an unfancied Sunderland side. Although Ally McLeod's 1978 World Cup has gone down as a disaster, the team really was weighed down with unrealistic expectations. Their final game, a thrilling win over the best team in the tournament (Holland) will never be forgotten by anyone who saw it. Farewell to two fine old men. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: The Borchester Echo Date: 02 Feb 04 - 10:30 AM And another footbal manager Bob Stokoe died yesterday too. Though I don't see what either event has to do with music... |
Subject: Obit: Ally Mcleod From: Tam the Bam (Nutter) Date: 02 Feb 04 - 10:24 AM Ally Mcleod was Scotland's manger at one time, he was a great man. I tihnk that most of Britain will miss him, if not then Scotland anyway. Sadly Missed |
