Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,MerryWoman Date: 18 Jun 04 - 09:23 PM Andy, Alas... so MUCH to do. So MUCH to see. So LITTLE time... I doubt I'll be able to make it up to Skye this trip. But, I know without a doubt that once I've made one trip to this wonderful country, I'll be back. I like to claim some Scots blood in my veins, so it's like coming home, right? Thanks. Mary Anne |

Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,merrywoman Date: 15 Jun 04 - 11:54 AM Thanks, Noddy. I have packed a good repellent with high DEET content. I think the product you're referring to is Avon's Skin So Soft. It works here pretty well on mosquitos, and I read in a guide book that it seems effective against midges, too. I have had a healthy respect for midges ever since reading about them in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings almost 30 years ago!! Mary Anne |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,noddy Date: 15 Jun 04 - 10:48 AM BEWARE THE MIDGES! The are tiny flying insects also know as flying pyranaha! I joke not. Make sure you have insect repellent with a high DEET content or get eaten alive. There is another thing they dont like but I will have to ask my wife. It is a face cream or hand cream "Sure Super so soft".I will post again with the right name tomorrow. Otherwise enjoy. |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,merrywoman Date: 15 Jun 04 - 10:34 AM David, Nice job on the language. ;-) Unfortunately for me, I'll be heading back to Texas on July 6. So, I can't make the Stonehaven festival. NEXT trip, I'll plan the whole thing around folk music. This time I'm traveling part of the time with friends and just tacking on some on-my-own time to round out the trip. Thanks. Mary Anne |

Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,merrywoman Date: 14 Jun 04 - 05:22 PM Ake, I am predisposed to love the country because I love the music. I'm sure I won't be disappointed. ...and after a few drams, it's ALL good. Yes? ;-) Again, thanks. Mary Anne |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: akenaton Date: 14 Jun 04 - 04:35 PM Mary....The Cobbler Hotel used to have country dance music for the "towrists",but its sort of fallen out of fashion. Traditional folk music has never been common on the West Coast. In my youth the big thing was Scottish Country Dances. There were plenty of great bands about, and every village had a dance at least once a week. I still remember the feeling of excitement, walking to the hall, the nearer you got,the louder the music and cries of the dancers became. After a few drams everybody had a great time. The dances usually went on from 8:00pm till 2 or 3 in the morning. The scenery round Arrochar is spectacular, they call the mountains "the Arrochar Alps".Try to get down by Cowal and see Loch Eck ,another beatiful spot, and most importantly enjoy your stay. I hope you get to love the place half as much as I do ....Ake |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,merrywoman Date: 14 Jun 04 - 03:11 PM Murray, Well, rats about the Village Inn and others in the village not having live music. Thanks for checking, though. While in Edinburgh, I'll be depending on shanks mares and public transportion. Once I arrive in Arrochar, however, I'll have some access to a car (you may want to steer clear of the area... driving on the left side of the road will be a new experience!). Mary Anne |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: Murray MacLeod Date: 14 Jun 04 - 01:38 PM Mary, the Village Inn does not have any live music, at least not in summer. The manager told me that the rest of the hotels in the village are the same. They are so busy in summer I guess they don't feel the need to put on any musical attractions. Will you have the use of a car while in Edinburgh, btw ? |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,merrywoman Date: 14 Jun 04 - 01:08 PM Akenaton, Scabby Douglas, Noddy, My guru, guests, et al, Thanks!! By the way, right now I'm working off a fairly small map of Scotland (I'll have a better once I arrive). If you can give any indication of where some of these places (like Auldhouse near East Kilbride) are, it would be most helpful. I have been warned about the midges, Ake, but I don't intend to let them slow me down. I'll try to keep my knees covered (at least with some sort of bug-repellent). So, are you familliar with a place called the Village Inn? Do they ever have music there? Just asking because it's close to where I'll be. Again, many thanks. Mary Anne |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: akenaton Date: 14 Jun 04 - 12:12 PM Hi Mary .....Dont think you'll have much time for music, you'll spend most of your time doing battle with the famous Arrochar midge!! Arrochar ,not far from my wee hoose, is notorious for the ferocity of its midges. Para Handy used to say,"they like nothing better, than an Englishman wi bare knees" ....Ake |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,noddy Date: 14 Jun 04 - 09:04 AM I thought that EK had grown so much it had joined up with Auldhouse. I used to get served in that pub when I was 14 years old. Me and my mates would walk out have two pints play darts then walk home. Oh the high life we lived in those days. |

Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,Scabby Douglas Date: 13 Jun 04 - 11:58 AM If singing is your thing, then Wednesday evening at Cafe Source in Glasgow is where to be. It's part of SAINTS, just down from Glasgow Cross Saint Andrews In The Square Proceedings kick off after 8pm. If you want to sing, come and sit in or near the circle, we have a few regulars that lurk at the back, but if we don't know you like to sing, then we won't pester visitors. |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,merrywoman Date: 12 Jun 04 - 05:35 PM Thanks, guys. Sorry to hear the Green Kettle's no longer an option. I like the name. I've had several folks recommend Sandy Bell's and The Royal Oak. I enjoy instrumental stuff, but what I REALLY love is singing (listening, not doing!). I'm not worried about places looking like a dive... ;-) You should see some of the places in Texas where I go to hear good music. Edinburgh, here I come! (just 11 more days!) Mary Anne |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,Bex McK Date: 12 Jun 04 - 03:50 PM In Edinburgh: Sandy Bell's Bar on Forrest Road-- for Irish/Scottish instrumental stuff most nights of the week. The Royal Oak on Infirmary Street for singing-- mostly folk-- every night of the week. It looks like a dive (no, I take that back, it IS a dive), but there is occasionally an absolutely magical session in there. Don't be put off by appearances. In most pubs in Edinburgh, you can pick up a copy of The Gig Guide, which will list pretty much all of the live music in town for the month. |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 12 Jun 04 - 09:54 AM Hi Mary I just phoned the Green Kettle and it is no longer a pub/hotel so no more sessions. Kenny B |
Subject: RE: Venues for folk/trad music in Scotland? From: GUEST,MerryWoman Date: 11 Jun 04 - 09:19 PM Wow, you were right, Murray. MANY thanks for all the leads, everyone. Kenny, I HAVE a map... just haven't used it yet. ;-) Gonna. Soon. I was going by the write-up on the place where I'm staying... not right in Arrochar, but 2 miles from that train station, I think. (I'm glad Garelochhead is 4-5, not 94-5 miles away!) Again, thanks to you all. If you ever get to Texas, I'll hook y'all up to some fine Texas Two-Steppin' music (or, even better, some small folk venues). |

Alba Folk is a good site. Follow through for clubs in Fife, Glennfarg is good, Dunkeld the TAybank Web site Once owned by Dougie Maclean but sold on to very friendly and like minded new owners. Has a good club on a froday night upstairs or session almost very night in bar. Stirling Folk Club, The Wee Folk Club in Edinburgh itself .
