In the UK, the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) was formed years before the National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

We have a fourth cat that has been living with us for a year now. He doesn't have his own food bowl, he only eats what the three permanent residents here leave, but he's fatter than any of them.

Talking to my neighbours over the back fence, I find he lived with them for 18 months before moving in with us, and is actually 'owned' by a family 3 doors down on the opposite side of the block where he pops in for food but doesn't stay.

Here in the land of plenty you would more than likely see many abandoned dogs roaming the streets ... abandoned because Sparky the dalmation peed on the rug, or Spike the pitt bull was abandoned from from his crack addict master .... different cultures, different reasons, different requirements of laws. Don't forget some of these laws requiring regulations regarding dogs are in place to protect the dog.

Well, if you go to Trinidad or Cuba or Mexico...where life is more relaxed and regulations are fewer...you will see lots of the local dogs walking around freely everywhere, socializing with each other and the people, and that's pretty cool. Reminds me of old times. I used to go to this little cafe in Cuba, sit and talk to friends over a glass of rum and coke and eat fresh made food that was REAL food, not fast food. There were two little dogs that came to that cafe every day too, from somewhere nearby. They would hang out there, watch the people go by, and occasionally get lucky and score a scrap of food that fell on the floor.

Now admittedly, you see a lot of starving and desperate dogs in those countries too. That's the way it is down there. But I like the easygoing way life just flows naturally in those tropical countries. It's very relaxing and good for the soul.

They are, in many ways, freer people than we are...though not necessarily in a political sense.

"Those days are long gone." .... those days are gone as times are changing ... for the better or worse ... it's up to you to decide.

That's how a smart pet earns its keep in this world. Unfortunately, Canadian society is so hidebound with a million damn rules and regulations now that dogs can no longer wander around the town or country neighborhood and meet the neighbors like they did when I was a kid. Those days are long gone.

You don't see kids running around outside as much anymore either. They're mostly inside, hunkered down in front of a video game of some kind.

Friends of mine had a cat who had got more than slightly overweight cat,so they put him on a strict diet , which had absolutely NO effect . They found out why when Walter (the cat) followed them down to the football club bar one Sunday lunchtime , to be greeted by cries of 'Ooh Its Blacky / Sooty etc etc . Walter was doing the rounds of ANY one he could scrounge food off as soon as he got out of the house !!

Toby was a dachsund we use to have....she had a food route that she would go on daily....her favourite stop was a elderly German gentleman who lived next door to us named Mr. Messenbrink. He adored her and would feed her all srots of goodies...there were times where she got so fat her belly would touch the floor when she was standing up.

She happily strolls down the summer sidewalk, feeling how each golden ray warms the concrete beneath her four feet, Her tongue pokes from her grinning lips as she waddles her way to the next stop, her bulging stomache gently scraping along the ground.
She sees him standing there, smiling down at her, gently wooing her with his German voice as he softly tells her to come in. She waddles in happily as he sets down before her a gleaming bowl of soft cold ice cream dripping down into the bottom of the basin, creating a wonderful chocolate caramel soup.
The elderly gentleman laughs at her eager to desire to have it all inside her already protuberant belly. He kneels down beside her and pats her lovingly on her reddish brown head. "Mein zucker", he murmurs in her ear as he strokes her long dachsund body. She pauses her tongue momentarily as it hungrily caresses the soft cold creamy soup swirling in the bowl so that she may lick him once or twice in immense gratitude on his wrinkle lined face. He laughs again and rises from his place beside her.
She goes back to the ice cream, paying him no mind as he steps to the fridge in a search for more goodies. "Hmm" he thinks as he sees the remains of last night's meal tucked away in tins and tupperware, He lays the feast out on a plate and places it beside the now empty bowl of ice cream. Her eyes light up with unadulterated greed as she gleefully attacks this new garden of unearthly delights; sausages, roast beef, potatoes and cold gravy.
His old lonesome heart burst with the pleasure of seeing her joy as she gobbles down this feast fit for a queen, the queen of all dachsunds in Bonners Ferry if not the whole world. He watches as she licks every last drop from that plate, scrubbing it clean with her canine tongue.
She slithers over to where he sits, her belly almost longer than her legs, scraping along the floor. He bends down and helps her into his lap and tenderly strokes her ears as she licks his face once more, thanking him with each lap of her tongue. They sit there togehter for a while as she provides comfort to this lonely old man, gifting him him with her very company, with her very love.
Eventually however she knows she must get up and move on. He understands this, but he knows she will return to him again, tomorrow and once again he will have the pleasure of her company. They walk to the door together, friendly gentle host and loving visiting guest. He opens the door and watches her stroll back out into the summer sun, down the baking sidewalk to the next stop in her daily feeding route, tongue lolling out her mouth in greedy anticipation.
