And don't forget that Google Books and Archive.org have hundreds of books available (Ashton included!). They're (for copyright reasons) mostly 19th century, but some earlier and some later. Almost all texts you find referenced from that era are available. I about 250 song and ballad books downloaded from those sources.

One of the songbooks aided me today, with great background writing on Appalachia and religion. It will be part of an ongoing effort to sensitize our diocese to issues in our area.   AND I got a bunch of new songs, and discovered the Carter's didn't originate the text for "Where Shall I Be".

All the information is out there, but from time to time it needs to be drawn together into something approaching a coherent and manageable form. In some cases, the material has been put up "as is" in forms which are quite difficult to find or to use effectively (I am a great believer in proper indexes and lists of contents), so some commentary can also be helpful, even if it is often critical.

Essentially it's just a finding aid, and only incomplete work-in-progress (there is a great deal more that might usefully be done): it's a good thing that Nina mentioned it, though, as I would probably not have got around to doing that myself, such things being (by their nature) never finished.

Jeri, I do not personally know you but I would really like too. I can't imagine what the world would be like if not souls like you were not upon it. You are completely correct in your assessment of not only me but the motive behind the ignorance. There are other things that I've not had time to add so far, and plenty more stuff out there that I don't know about yet, of course. Material turns up all the time, and some of the information came from the Forum here, thanks to people like Masato, Q and others. Eventually I intend sections on dance and instrumental music as well, but time is rather short just at the moment (evidently I had forgotten to mention the listings here, for example).

I've just visited a couple of those sites. Wow! Hours to spend!
