Whenever we go back to Wales we are welcomed with open arms. There's none of this 'You're English' - it's like being with old friends again. Llantrisant is always a good one, Conwy has a good club opposite the railway station and Newport is excellent as well. But remember to come to Miskin Festival at Easter. That's one not to be missed. Go and enjoy yourself.

I went to Aberystwyth in the sixties. What a superb place for a University, between the sea and the country, with the University being given the prominence it deserves. I had some of the best music sessions in my life there (till lately) - I don't suppose it's changed too much - you'll love it.

The Welsh go to other countries for their folk music.

Check any audience and you'll find the majority are incomers.

Sir John said 'They're full of Welsh people'. Oh, no, they're not! We were at Conwy FC recently, and discovered that there was precisely one Welsh person in the audience! I have to say that it was a bit unexpected.

If its the North then I can recommend Conwy Folk Club and I am told that Rhyl Folk Club is just as good.

Andrew-

Thanks for the information you posted. We're thinking about visiting Wales next year and a list of folk clubs and sessions will make it more interesting.

You could listen to Celtic Heartbeat on BBC Radio Wales, Saturday at 23.00. It's also available online. Frank Henessey, the presenter, would probably answer an email about this and he can be contacted through the BBC website.

And you can subscribe to Ontrac (free) at www.trac-cymru.org. It's more a report on Welsh trad 'other' activity, not folk clubs (which are covered by Taplas) but there's usually info on various workshops.

As said previously, it depends on where you're going ... There are good sessions in various parts of Wales - north, mid and south - and tune clubs and day schools are growing in popularity.

Assuming you're coming to Welsh Wales, not that small village in Yorkshire, you'll find the folk clubs much like their English counterparts. Where in Wales? Bear in mind that, generally speaking, the further west and north you go, the more you will meet people for whom Welsh is the first language. In South Wales, we have a club on the Gower peninsula (near Swansea) on Sundays, with a guest night once a month (Johnny Collins and Martin Carthy - not together - are coming soon) - other Sundays are singarounds, mostly English language - in fact, mostly populated by English ex-pats! Scooby Doo and friends have an excellent Wednesday night club at Llantrisant, just off the M4 between Swansea and Cardiff. Newport and Cardiff in the South East have clubs, as do Fishguard and Aberystwyth in the West. The main folk music magazine in Wales is called Taplas, they have a website imaginatively located at www.taplas.co.uk - if you can get hold of a copy, that will give you an idea of what is going on, folkwise, in the principality.

All the best,

Andrew

Try www.folkwales.org.uk, if you look hard enough you will find folk clubs throughout Wales.

Kiveton Park Folk Club is excellent and situated in Wales.

Sadly the Wales referred to is a tiny ex-mining village in South Yorkshire. (You could get to it easily if you went to Sheffield University). Good luck with your seach.

Juat a thought - if you've still not decided on which University, and you're especially interested in finding THE BEST folk clubs and acoustic music scene in the country, then take a look at Sheffield.

BE WARNED - students coming to Sheffield Universities often stay FOR LIFE!!!!

So long as you wear a Welsh rugby shirt, carry a leek and know the words to all Max Boyce's greatest hits, you'll be fine. Just don't try to follow John Redwood in singing the Welsh anthem though!

Hello all!

Next summer I am hopefully moving up to Wales as that is where I would like to go to University. But I must know one thing...are there any folk clubs up in Wales? And what are they like? It's a pretty vague question I know but I have no knowlege about the folk scene in Wales so any information will be helpful and greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Sophia x
