Alcester this year was my first ever the first folk festival.

Have to say it was fantastic. Spent most of my time in the singarounds, but it was great to meet, listen to and watch some truly superb musicians.

Thanks to all involved in organising and performing at the event, and will definitely be back next year, especially as it was only about 12 miles from my home!!

Big raps for Marje and Dave (and all their crew)
Marvellous festival. Wonderful folk.

Met loads of catters - put faces to names....
ordered a badge!
I totally enjoyed my two days there...
...and the lemonade!

Back home on the brandy again now - hic!

Cheers one and all! - HFA

Roll on next year, but perhaps it could be just an eensy-weensy bit cooler......

What a Fab weekend, didn't get to a single concert but enjoyed all the Sings. How on earth do the dancers cope in that heat?

Huge thanks to Dave & Marje & all the people who helped make it happen!

An absolutely smashing weekend, thanks to Marge, Dave and all the others involved and thanks also to Moor & Coast for their hospitality and Whitby cod.
A particular thanks and symapthy to all the dancers who persevered and perspired in the glorious sunshine

And very good it was too, just got home from an excellent weekend. Ok, it was so hot I feel like I've been fried, but there were some great acts. Well done to Dave, Marje and Chris and everyone else involved for getting it all back on track so quickly. It's lovely to see the town supporting the festival.

We (rhyzome) also enjoyed the festival very much although we only played on sunday.

Our favourite venue was the fire-station, with a nice open aspect, lovely sunshine, good beer, smell of food wafting through on the breeze and a friendly appreciative crowd - we loved it!!

It was nice to see some more catters there too!!

No apology needed, muppitz, but it is accepted as it is so graciously offered. To be honest, I hadn't even noticed - I must have been concentrating on remembering the words!

The gazebo session was indeed my favourite. Surprised there hadn't been more of those, given the weather conditions.

Well, I'm knackered, I smell like a chip and I only managed to catch the session in the Gazebo on Saturday night, bless Duncan McFarlane for his tribute to Joe Scurfield and once again, apologies to El Greko whose song I so rudely started talking over, until I realised the error of my ways!
But I heard the festival was good!
Thanks again Ms Lemon for the refreshments, we were being boiled alive in there!

And as well as all that lovely singing and the wonderful friendly people you can come along and dance Border morris. 'Herbaceous Border' will be there, inviting anyone to join in and have a go.

Well done to all of you who've managed to keep it going - and especially the people of Alcester for coming up trumps.

You may have heard that Alcester & Arden Folk Festival has had to be cancelled due to the last-minute withdrawal of a major sponsor.

WELL IT'S STILL ON!!!

I've just got back from a meeting at the Holly Bush where the people of Alcester made it very clear that they want the folk festival to go ahead.

The funding for this year has been found in the town, and the festival WILL go ahead. And we're putting measures in place to assure secure funding for future years.

Please spread the good news to everyone you think mught be interested.

This is the day of the Phoenix - Alcester FF and Liverpool FC both recover from apparent knockout blows to triumph in the end.

See you all there.

I just spoke with Dave James on the phone. Details will appear on the festival website in due course, but the gist is as follows:

This is a one-year-only hitch. The Festival had some of its financial backing withdrawn - for this year -, but I understand that the town elders are seriously disappointed about the cancellation, and this gives rise to hopes for guaranteed funding next year (a meeting on this is to be held this evening).

In any case, the Festival WILL run in 2006, with the same lineup as published for 2005, plus more artists (here's hoping, EG) if funds allow.

This is not a permanent closure therefore. Just a one-year stay, not dissimilar to the one that affected Sidmouth.

I'm inclined to agree, Sal. A lot of festivals are starting to price themselves out so less people go unless they can arrange to steward. A lot of us enjoy the fringe element of festivals so paying a lot of money when you don't intend seeing a lot of the concerts or do the workshops can be annoying. Folk weekends like Bishop's Castle (although I've never actualy been) allow you to enjoy good company and good music without having to pay a fortune. If I want to see a big name I'd rather pay for a concert ticket and go see them another time.

CANCELLED...

received an email containing this "Cancelled: Alcester Festival in June due to the lack of financial support."

I'm stunned! It's time to go back to the old type of festival like Bishop's Castle Folk Weekend.

I'm so sorry for all concerned with the organisation of this festival. It's heart breaking.

Sal
Note: I combined today's two threads on this festival - one said the festival was cancelled, and the other said it was ON. As of 2005-05-25 18:12:39, my information was that the cancellation has been lifted, and that the festival will go on as planned. Please let me know by personal message if the situation changes, and I will update this note and the title of this thread.
    Thanks.
