I found the text here (click). Could it possibly be the right one, Bill? No "Cher Madame" that I could find, but maybe there are different versions?

Say, Remi, can you post that one? At least, we'll get one song out of this thread that's been going for 13 months without success. I checked with my French Mainer friend in church this morning, and he didn't know the song.

The number of French songs containing "Madame" or "Chère Madame" - dear Lady - is enormous... I know a French Canadian song called "Le Rapide Blanc" which contains a line like that... But you must be more specific...

Hi, Bill - I finally remembered to get a message to my friend Joe, who grew up in a French-speaking Catholic parish in Maine. He can't sing worth a darn, but maybe he'll remember the song. I'll let you know what he says.

How About La Bastringue. It's a popular Quebecois dance tune, but one of the verses goes:

Mademoiselle, voulez-vous dancer
La Bastringue, La Bastringue
Mademoiselle, voulez-vous dancer
La Bastringue va commencer.

Then there's a subsequent verse where she answers the guy, saying "Non, merci, j'ai mal de tete" (No thanks, I have a headache.)

There are no doubt many with Cher Madame in them. What was the song about?

Was it by any chance quite uptempo and with the repeated words "touche touche touche touche"?

Can you give a little more information or a few more words from the song? I may be able to find out, but it may take awhile. There are plenty o' singers of French Canadian music still around New Hampshire.

In the 1920's in Manchester, NH my mother used to sing a French or French Canadian song or hymn with the words: "cher madam" in the lyrics. Her 80 year old brother says the same. Any hints or suggestions? Even a guess. Thanks, Boston Bill
