Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Poor Old Rover (from Bing Crosby) From: GUEST,bob Date: 30 Apr 12 - 07:54 PM I can remember an old 78 RPM record that we had over 60 years ago. As I can remember, the words to the song went something like this: Poor old Rover, his roving days are over. He can hardly get around, oh the poor old hound. He followed me, so faithfully. There's a spot on the hill, that is peaceful and still. Where I will place a slab of stone. Up the Hill, we've got to go. But old Rover don't know, that I'll be coming back all alone. Poor old Rover, come on let's get it over. Then I'll kneel and say a prayer, let us meet up there. Rest peacefully, Old Rover. |

Subject: Lyr Add: POOR OLD ROVER (from Bing Crosby) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 10 - 09:33 AM My transcription from a recording at YouTube. The sound quality is very poor, so there could be some mistakes. POOR OLD ROVER As sung by Bing Crosby I'll say farewell to an old, old friend who's been with me many years, And I know when we have to say goodbye, my eyes will fill with tears. Poor old Rover, His rovin' days are over. He can hardly get around, The poor old hound. He comes to me so faithfully. Poor old Rover, His hunting days are over. Oh, it nearly breaks my heart That we have to part. He's followed me so faithfully. There's a spot on the hill That is peaceful and still, Where I will place a slab of stone. Up the hill though we must go, But old Rover don't know That I'll be comin' back all alone. Poor old Rover, Come on, let's get it over. I've dug a grave that's deep For your long, long sleep. Rest peacefully, old Rover. There's a spot on the hill That is peaceful and still, Where I will place a slab of stone. Up the hill we gotta go, But old Rover don't know That I'll be comin' back all alone. Poor old Rover, I'll plant your grave with clover, Then I'll kneel and say a prayer: Let us meet up there. Rest peacefully, old Rover. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: poor old Rover From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Sep 10 - 06:54 AM I am reminded of a song I once heard on a campsite at Cambridge Folk Festival, with the words: Last year I went to Sunny Spain, With Rover the Spaniel. The Spaniards wouldn't let him on the plane, Not Rover the Spaniel. So he did his doggy paddle cross the main - My spaniel's paws are sore. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: poor old Rover From: Gurney Date: 22 Sep 10 - 03:52 PM My niece bought herself a pet Tarantula. I suggested that she named it Rover. There was a short silence..... There are people who feel that I have a warped sense-of-humour. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: poor old Rover From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Feb 04 - 12:41 AM Bing Crosby recorded a song called POOR OLD ROVER in 1939. Authorship is credited to "Johnson/Porter." Couldn't find any lyrics, though. |
Subject: RE: poor old Rover From: Roro Date: 06 Jan 99 - 12:18 AM Joe--THANK YOU for directing me to Kentucky Babe and thus to the Levy collection! There I found a number of the songs my dad sang-all the words and the music, too! I felt like today was Christmas, as I "opened" up song after song, along with many sweet memories! Thanks again for your help! Roro |
Subject: RE: poor old Rover From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jan 99 - 03:37 AM Hi, Roro - We flood this forum with so many song lyrics that the Digital Tradition editor aren't able to get them all into the database right away - so it's a good idea to search the forum, using the search link on the forum menu. Sometimes the forum search can be slow, since all these forum messages we post make up a huge database. I found Kentucky Babe (click here). Keep checking this thread. I'll bet that within a couple of days, somew old pro like Dale Rose or Gene Graham will come up with the real "Rover" song for you. I didn't think the Smothers Brothers song was the one you wanted. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: goofing? From: Roro Date: 05 Jan 99 - 01:30 AM Joe--maybe I am doing something wrong--I did check the databae and forum first and nothing came up. I looked for "Kentucky Babe",too, and got nothing. I was sure it would be in there."Old Shep" was the song I was looking for-thank you-but 'Rover" by the Smothers Brothers was not. The one I am looking for says "There's a spot upon the hill....something something...but Rover doesn't know, that I'll be comin' home all alone..". I am trying to put toghether a scrapbook for my siblings of the songs my dad sang when we were little. Thank you for this great site! -Roro- |
Subject: RE: poor old Rover From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Jan 99 - 05:02 PM Roro, Click here for a Smothers Brothers song that almost meets your "Rover" criteria. is that the one??? Click here for "Old Shep"- or, better yet, click here. It's always best to search the Mudcat forum and lyrics database before posting a request. -Joe Offer- |
