Now if it read
"The ferns on them bulGing by the thousand gentle eyes"

I'm sure there are enough fertile minds here to do something with that...

Thank you Celtaddict and Joe.

I got those lines off what was supposed to be a Pete St. John lyric site. I knew they just couldn't be correct.

Does this link (click) work? It leads to a photo of Ben Bulben, a mountain (1,730 feet [527 m]) in County Sligo in the West of Ireland that is steeped in folklore. Yeats wrote of the mountain, and is buried not far from it. I went to his grave, and got a good view of the mountain from there.

The curlew is calling,
The shy fawn is prancing,
The ferns on Ben Bulben hide a thousand gentle eyes.

Ben Bulben is a mountain [ben] in Ireland.

The first two lines of the last verse of this Pete St. John song reads:

The Curlew is calling, a shy form(Fawn)is prancing,

The ferns on them bulbing by the thousand gentle eyes.

Is this correct? If so can anyone explain what it means.

Thanks

E. M.
