"a little more interesting lyrically" is surely the one thing this song ain't...

Thanks, though, both of you. I don't have sound here so can't listen to the clip...

William Shield (a County Durham man by birth, who started out as a boatbuilder's apprentice) was a prolific musician, composer, arranger and conductor for the church and for the stage, so the bare information Ms Lavin provides is of very little help.

There is a sound sample at her website ( http://www.christinelavin.com/ ), as it turns out:

http://www.christinelavin.com/audio/CLavXmas.mp3

From a purely personal point of view, I can't say that I care for it. Perhaps the full-length version is easier on the ear, better balanced and a little more interesting lyrically.

Maybe someone will recognise the tune from it, though. I'd best mention that it isn't We wish you a Merry Christmas, just in case somebody was thinking of suggesting that. On the whole, I'd suggest that you ask Ms Lavin rather than us; she presumably already knows the answer.

I have the recording that the song is on. It doesn't give any additional information on the song, but Christine says that she learned many of the songs from Sol Weber & to contact him for further information at:

solweber@juno.com

Hope that helps!

best,

Christine Lavin says her "A Christmas/ Kwanzaa/ Solstice/ Chanukah/ Ramadan/ Boxing Day Song" (which I have the lyrics to but have not heard) has "Music by William Shield (1748-1829)" and Words by Christine Lavin.

My question is, what is the tune? I know William Shield is accused of having composed The Miller's Daughter aka The Miller's Wedding aka I fee'd a lad at Michaelmas, to which Burns's Auld Lang Syne is routinely sung, but I can't seem to get her lyrics to fit it. So what tune is she talking about of Mr. Shield's?
