Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Trip to Jerusalem (Joe Dolan) From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 02 Feb 20 - 01:40 PM "a rose by any other name ..." Shouldn't that be "a road by any other name..."! Regards |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Trip to Jerusalem (Joe Dolan) From: Steve Shaw Date: 31 Jan 20 - 05:32 PM You're right to correct me (I was unwisely relying on memory). Sorry about that. Even more annoying in that I play both tunes. The "To Dublin" bit is often omitted from the tune name. I got the name mixed up with the slip jig, The Rocky Road To Dublin. Still, a rose by any other name... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Trip to Jerusalem (Joe Dolan) From: GUEST,guest Date: 31 Jan 20 - 05:12 PM "They're Mullingar Races and The Rocky Road". "Mullingar Races" and "Crooked Road To Dublin", actually. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Trip to Jerusalem (Joe Dolan) From: Steve Shaw Date: 31 Jan 20 - 03:36 PM It was that same Joe Dolan, Michael. It's a bit confusing because there was a different Joe Dolan who was more active in the pop music world. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Trip to Jerusalem (Joe Dolan) From: Steve Shaw Date: 31 Jan 20 - 03:29 PM The instrumental tunes at the end of Christy's singing are absolute star quality! They're Mullingar Races and The Rocky Road. It's a fabulous album. Christy live is always the best way to hear him post-Planxty, but this album is terrific. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Trip to Jerusalem (Joe Dolan) From: GUEST,michaelr Date: 31 Jan 20 - 01:04 PM Is this the same Joe Dolan who was a member of Sweeney's Men? The tune, by the way, is the same as "Muirsheen Durkin." |

Subject: RE: LYR. ADD: Trip to Jerusalem From: Big Mick Date: 17 Jan 99 - 03:06 PM Mike, Of course I am still talking to you. It wasn't you who seemed rude, it was me. Context is very difficult to get into a thread sometimes. And your response back to the apology was gracious and genuine. So, onward we go. All the best, Mick |

Its a great saving on going to the music library and getting the tape out and trying to decipher the words. Thanks again. Mike ps and to you Frank |
Subject: RE: LYR. ADD: Trip to Jerusalem From: Alice Date: 16 Jan 99 - 11:40 PM Now, if you are wondering how I found a Lebanese online news site, well, it's because I have a news tracker that I set up on my Excite page that tracks articles about folk music, and the keywords include Irish music. Isn't the internet grand? |
Subject: RE: LYR. ADD: Trip to Jerusalem From: Alice Date: 16 Jan 99 - 11:34 PM This reminds me of an article I read the other day called "The DJs of Camp Shamrock who help to keep Irish eyes smiling". It's on the Daily Star website (www.dailystar.com)click here |
Subject: RE: LYR. ADD: Trip to Jerusalem From: Frank McGrath Date: 16 Jan 99 - 07:55 PM Excellent Mick. I had just cracked open my LP to type out the words and I am currently listening to Christy in fine form and sounding very young. So I'll put in the sleeve notes for the song. The Trip to Jerusalem was written by Joe Dolan who wrote the following: Great song. Best Regards |
Subject: Lyr Add: TRIP TO JERUSALEM (Joe Dolan) From: Big Mick Date: 16 Jan 99 - 12:46 PM TRIP TO JERUSALEM (Joe Dolan) I'm a stranger here from Ireland's shore, Been on the road six months or more. Hikin', workin', travel in style, I'm a vagabond from Ireland's Isle. My sunburned thumb stuck up in the air Many's the lift from here to there, Cars, buses, vans and trains In the punishing heat, the snow and rain CHORUS: Whack fol de diddle fel de diro deh Whack fol de diddle fel de dero Mrs. Dolan, your son he isn't workin' I cam from Dublin to Jerusalem town Had a drink or two on the journey down At a railway station called Gare du Nord I missed my train through garglin' hard Three days later in Napoli On a Turkish boat I sailed to sea Slept in a hot hole down below Travelin' tourist class you know CHORUS: When the promised land came into sight The customs man gave me a fright 'How much money have you got with you, Joe?' I bluffed and said, 'Fifty pounds or so' He said, 'Shalom,' I said 'Good day' Grabbed my gear got fast away. down to the desert then I went, diggin' up history, livin' in a tent. CHORUS: It was in the Gulf of Aqaba I met some Paddies and we had a fleadh Danced throught the streets of Eilat Town Sang 'Sean South of Garryowen'. I was travellin', I don't know. You pack your gear get up and go Leave the craic for another bout, Could damn well do with a pinto of stout CHORUS |
