In a way i agree with Martin - i didn't hear Hank until I was in my mid twenties and already doing country music gigs.

Dylan seemed to be totally outlandish, when I first heard him as a teenager - so different from everything else - when I heard Hank - I thought - so that's who Dylan copied originally.

Moe Bandy I always see as being like George Jones.

I was listening to Towns Van Zandt last night and thinking that Woody Guthrie had to be a heavy influence there. Also, that Bill Staines had a heavy dose of Van Zandt at some point.

On a recent American Masters on PBS someone said, maybe Ray Price, that Hank Sr. told him that he got his vocal style by meshing the styles of his two favorite singers, Tubb and Roy Acuff. Something to that effect.
I hear a bit of Billie Holiday in Sinatra's phrasing. Not in his long legato lines but in the way he sometimes clips the end of a phrase.

Leonard Cohen on his first album reminds me very much of Yves Albert, who appears on Columbia's boxed LP set Canadian Folk Songs--arpeggio finger-picking patterns and dreamily sombre singing. Surely they must have known one another in Montreal circa 1960.

Martin, I agree wholeheartedly with Hank Sr., also Hank Locklin, and Hank Thompson.Anybody called Hank, but not Hank Jr.
I can't see any of the old man's ability in him at all.
Maybe I'm getting old, and can't see past the greats of the 40's 50's and 60's.

Yer right Martin. Rock Around the Clock was almost a direct rip off of Move it on Over. And it was a little over 4 years. I think Move it on over was written in 1947.

Seamus, Yes, even Hank, Jr. to some degree.

The whole rock and roll thing came from to a large degree (not entirely) from Hank. Argueably, his "Move it on Over" was the first white guy rock song, pre-dating bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock by about 4 years. Elvis was highly influenced by Hank, Sr.

Jimmie Rogers was the father of just about everything. Vernon Dalhart might have had the first big million selling hit with The Prisoner's Song which, along with Rogers, influenced, Tubb, Snow, Williams, and just about everyone else from that generation.

I'm not Matt Watroba, but I can tell you that his name was Emmett Miller and that he wasn't black. He was a white, minstrel show singer who performed in blackface.

Tunesmith, depends what you like. I favor his early works because they are more "folkie" than his later works. This man is an outstanding poet whose songs have been recorded by everyone from John Denver to Emmylou Harris, to Kermit the frog, Pete Seeger and even me.

With a very few exceptions, every male country singer today comes from Jimmie Rodgers, either through Hank Williams or Lefty Frizzell.

Willie's always ploughed his own field, but in the early days was influenced by his pal, Faron.

Dwight Yoakam comes from Buck Owens, plain & simple.

Lyle Lovett is a one-off.

I was first introduced to David Mallett around 30 years ago by Noel Stookey. After hearing him the first time, I mentioned to David that he reminded me of Gordon Lightfoot early in his career. David told me then that Lightfoot was probably his biggest musical influence.

Another, related theme, that interests me is the use of exaggerated vocal mannerism. For example, Buddy Holly's " hiccups ". Now, Elvis did a bit of "hiccupping", and I believe that Buddy simply took it from Elvis and drove it in to the ground. Likewise, Shirley Bassey ( not one of my favourite singers)who has - what I would call - a, way over the top, dramatic delivery; think of her singing " I, I who have nothing". Again, I'm pretty sure she got that from the great Dinah Washington. Again, Dinah used that device a very subtle way, whereas Shirley lays it on with a trowel.

All artists - in some way or the other - are products of artists who come before them. In some cases, the precendents are pretty clear; for example, Roy Orbison is, surely, "The Platters meet Don Gibson". Any more suggestions?
