While travelling UK last year we saw Morris Offspring. Found their performance at the Oxford Folk Festival to be spectacular. I think they don't use bells as they have created a theatrical event and the bells would detract from the myth and magic of the moment. While dancing with an Australian side we danced a new dance written by our squire that I thought would be more riveting without bells, but we never did try it out!

I have seen Dog Rose and they are terrific. Very much in the tradtion, but also adding their own invention, and good dancers.

I haven't seen Morris Offspring live and I don't know why they don't wear bells (didn't know that, I though it was just something to do with that particular performance) but the pic of Laurel in full flight (Split capers, Page 3) is particularly impressive.

I have seen neither Dog Rose nor Morris Offspring live, but have followed the other thread about MO with interest. I have to say that of the photos on the link above, there seems to me more obvious energy in the mere three of Dog Rose than in any of the rest. I shall make a point of looking out for them - they remind me very much of the energy and precision that the likes of Great Western and Old Spot used to put into their dancing in the '70s & '80s - and no-one could ever accuse them of being sissy morris dancers!

Just one question - does anyone know *why* Morris Offspring don't use bells? It seems to me to be such a defining feature of Cotswold Morris that I can't see any reason why they shouldn't.

Having seen Offspring at Towersey and then seen the Bristol Morris Men at Bromyard this weekend I have to say Offspring look a bit indulgent. Bristol had lots of young excellent dancers (some actually dance with offspring as well) and I found them far more entertaining. Bring back bells! I also prefer Dogrose and the young womens team from Yorkshire? Name escapes me.
