You could have heard a pin drop in Oaktoen last night.

So Mickasaurus maximus, e-mail me your current address as I can't find it. On the other hand I could send to booze to the shores of Gunn Lake. No wait...better yet...I'll pay up, but what do you say to a little treasure hunt?

Kenny Rogers has been outstanding. Without him it certainly wouldn't have been so easy.

Anyway .... grumped out by this as The A's are my favourite team next to Boston.

But now I have to say Tigers all the way !

282RA, ignore that man behind the curtain. I know that the smell and noise emanating from there make it hard, but pay him no mind. And whatever you do, I beg you, please don't like a cigarette. No open flame of any kind. He will get his in the spring/early summer when his corporate partners show up unannounced, drink his booze, spoil his kids, feed his dogs stuff that makes them shit uncontrollably, eat all his food, flirt with his wife, make some music, screw up his reputation in Bremen ...... and then leave. One of his partners will be wearing World Champion Detroit Tigers paraphanelia. The other partner will have a 6'3" mustacheo, trapped in a 5'5" body, wearing yellow and green, screaming alternately "gee" and "haw", muttering about next year, and bitching at having to drink 12 year old Jamesons instead of the Scottish swill he has become accustomed to.

I believe it will be over in 5, but let us not forget that this is the World Series. Whoever gets there will be motivated mightily. Personally I hope its the Mets, just because there will be lots of folks in New Jersey pulling for them, and I (of course) will be wearing my Tigers stuff.

Marv Throneberry??????

It may not look so good for the Tigers if they play the Cards. Musial will always be Stan the Man and a potent threat anytime he steps to the plate. Curt Flood has a fantastic on base percentage and he can steal on about anyone. Boyer anchors down third and White is pretty strong at first. With Gibson on the mound any lineup is going to have a tough day and Jackson is no slouch as a starter either.

With the Cards, it could be tough. The Mets on the other hand......

I mean how the hell did they make it? I don't think they have a pitcher with a winning record or an ERA below 4.00!!! And sweet jumpin' Jesus, if your strongest players are Marv Throneberry or maybe Richie Ashburn...........Marv Throneberry?????? C'mon......

Better they play the Mets for sure.

Quite frankly, the National League is TERRIBLE right now. What a sorry, substandard bunch that is.

St. Louis in the playoffs??? They were 5 games over .500, I mean, really, and yet they lead the Mets 2-1 in the NLCS and the Mets had a better record than the Tigers!!! The Tigers knocked off Oakland in 4-straight and the A's won 10 more games this season than St. Louis and were in a far more competitive league and division (which wasn't even close to the incredible competitiveness of the AL Central) and the Tigers wiped em out, no sweat. Yet against their own crappy division teams, the Cards are UNDER .500!! The Tigers absolutely devoured the NL teams they faced this year. The NL has been swept in the last two World Series. Do the math, as they say, and realize that it is not in the Cards. While the Mets looked good on paper, as a team in the AL, they likely would not have made the playoffs. St. Louis definitely wouldn't and yet they lead the Mets whose ace pitcher in the World Series has 3-13 record this season and whose starter last night got the crapped knocked out of him--on those pitches that were anywhere close to the plate, I mean (and damned few were). The 2006 World Series should be in the bag for Detroit.

282RA, that homer to end the game was what baseball was all about. It was a great game, the A's finally came to play, and the pitcher/hitter duels were great the whole game. The consecutive at bats with each team loading the bases but failing to score was exciting stuff. Then the 3 run homer. WOW!! Jim Leyland is so deserving of all the accolades he gets. And the players. No give up in this bunch. Yeah, I think it will be five, as well.

Damn, I wish Rick were here. I love this stuff.

World Series opens Saturday.

I think the Tigers will win the Series pretty easily. I can't see the Mets or the Cards beating the Tigers. Tiger pitching will handcuff them and the offense will knock the opponent out of their own park. I'll give it five games against either opponent although I'll be surprised if it goes that long.

>>Now, you see, here is an all-American thread (till now). Where have all the Americans gone? Why, here!<<

Brits have baseball too. Cricket and stoolball are forms of baseball. In Ireland they play rounders--that's a form of baseball and is how the game was played in America when it was still called town-ball. When I was a kid, we played baseball in the yard by hitting the runner with the ball--the natural way to play when you don't have a full team. Americans also played one-hole cat and two-hole cat. All these were called "base-ball" in older writings. I understand baseball is perhaps more a girl's sport in the UK although there's certainly quite a number of women's baseball and softball teams in America also. Nor is it unusual for women and men to play on the same teams. In fact, the women's softball pitchers can crank 'em up at around 100 mph (161 kph).

That said, congrats to the Tigers!! American League champions! A hell of a walk-off homer by Magglio Ordonez did the trick. He absolutely crushed it. Now onto the World Series. First game won't be before Wednesday and may not get underway until Saturday so the Tiges can rest up. Let Casey and Zumaya get 100%. I think Shelton is eligible for the roster but maybe not. He'll add some punch to the lineup if he can get in.

Looks like St. Louis will win Game 2. I don't really want to face Pujols and this Taguchi guy is having too much of this postseason magic mojo thing going. That could interfere with the Tigers' mojo so here's hoping the Mets ultimately win the series and exhaust themselves in the process.

The Tigers have won 7 postseason games in a row--the last 6 being by 3 runs or more--believe it or not, that's a record. No other team in major league history has done that. I can see that World Series trophy coming to Detroit already. Ahhhhh!!

The A's seem to be having a lot of offense problems and I think it may be related to the bats they are using. I dunno' why but they contracted with El Swanno to make the bats for them and it doesn't seem to be working for them. Here's a picture of El Swanno working on a new bat and as you can see the dumbass hasn't even got the basic shape right. While I can see that a flat broad surface might be an advantage, no one can get a grip on the things and they're heavier than hell.

Notice too that the little girl is staring down at one of Dave's older bat designs and wondering how anyone on earth could possibly be that stupid. In a subsequent unpublished photo you can see her turning to look at the fat guy with the horrifying realization that there are at least TWO people that stupid.

Where did Thomas and Swisher go? They have all but disappeared. Even Milton Bradley was a no-show yesterday. Kotsay made some nice defensive plays but has done nothing offensively. Well, really, none of them have done much offensively. Even the game Bradley turned it up they still lost. Then again, Detroit has a big time pitching staff. While Boston has shown a team can come back down 0-3 and take it all, that is not going to happen here. The Sox and Yanks scrapped throughout that series where either team could have taken any of those games. In this series, Detroit is the only team with any scrap in them. Oakland is still apparently savoring their victory over the Twins. Meanwhile, Detroit is already thinking about who they're going to have to beat in the World Series.

Damn! Things have been so damn hectic around here the past few weeks I've missed most of the playoffs so far. Maybe I can get caught up.

I'm really amazed the Yankees are out of it with the lineup they have. They're not as strong as they were a couple of years back but they are still potent and deep at every position with Berra and Howard, Skowron and Pepitone, Tresh and Kubek. And Clete at third doesn't need backup! Plus that outfield is still strong with The Mick and Maris.....Then Whitey and Bouton of course....Man, I just can't believe they are out of it!

But I'm with Mick on this one although I thought I'd never say that after they stole Colavito from the Indians. So how is Rocky doing in the playoffs? Homer yet? Are they playing Wertz much? Vic ain't what he used to be but he still brings something to the team when he plays. Has Kaline gotten a couple of homers or triples? Did Bunning start the first game? And what about Hank Aguirre? He's really lived up to his all-star status this year.

Dave, I'm sorry but the A's just ain't all that much! Jerry Lumpe and Dick Howser are about the best they got and the pitching is nowhere. Orlando Pena is not too strong on the mound and John Wyatt can't close a door let alone a game, even with a big lead. They haven't shown much since they left Phildelphi.   Phildelphi? What happened to the A's? They moved to Kansas City! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA What a joke....as are the A's.

Keep me updated.

All I got to do is make it to 5:00 on Saturday afternoon, go to confession, then enjoy my whiskey. So much for the guilt. Do they have a baseball team in Bremen, Ohio? The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day...

But, come on, Mick. Look closely at the faces of the guys in the A's uniforms. Those aren't the A's. Clearly some bunch of bums stole the A's uniforms from air freight and took the field. No doubt the real A's are in an alley somewhere in their skivvies, freezing their goodies off, wishing they were playing baseball.

Nobody's buying this...

Gotta give it to Leyland. He puts in Alexis Gomez who only had 1 homer and 6 RBI all season as DH. Gomez gets two hits including a homer and drives in 4 without which the Tigers would not have won.
Pitching was great again. Rodney was awesome!! Sean Casey's absence put Guillen, a shortstop, at 1st base. Verlander was not at his best and still pitched well and got the win. Leyland is using his entire roster in a very effective and efficient manner. You got em, use em. And it's hard to pitch to an offense that pecks and picks at you to gouge out 5 runs, so you get 3 back and then they come out and bomb you home runs and do it from every part of their lineup. That's tough to pitch to inning after inning.

Other than Milton Bradley's awesome performance, Oakland makes too many mental errors that you rarely see the Tigers make--very costly mental lapses. It betrays a certain lack of development that must be overcome if that team is to be a World Series contender. The A's are a good team but haven't quite ripened. Detroit is simply playing better ball. A better developed team. At this time, I cannot foresee this series returning to Oakland.

Game 2, bottom of the 4th, and the Tigers are ahead 5 to 3. Every time Oakland scores, the Tigers answer. I will admit that the A's are being very patient hitters tonight. But Verlander seems to be hitting his stride on the mound. He is just blowing that ball by 'em.

282RA, I think you are right. If the Tige's manage to come out of Oakland with 2 wins, it will be ugly for the A's. But they are a tough team and shouldn't be counted out at any point. But Leyland is a cagy old fart and he will keep these Tigers heads in the right place.

I can taste that 12 year old Jamers now. Maybe I should have asked for the 18 year old stuff.

hahahahahahahaha. Back to the game.

>>I think that the A's were just being gentlemen. They wanted to give the Tigers a win before spanking them and sending them home.<<

I dunno. You really need to win the opener in your own house and set a pace. You can't let the wildcard come in and walk on your best pitcher and drive him out before 4 innings are over. Now Oakland absolutely MUST WIN TONIGHT!! If they lose, the series is over for all intents and purposes. Detroit will take it home and they ain't goin back to ol' Oakland. Oakland will be goin back to ol' Oakland.

The Tigers only had to take one in Oakland and now they can take two and they have Verlander on the mound and, if he has his stuff, Oakland is going to have a very difficult time of it. In fact, Oakland's rotation looks a bit sparse to me.

I don't like Sean Casey being out but I still think the Tigers will win handily without him if Verlander is locating. Overall, I would have to give the advantage to the Tigers. Then again, everyone gave the advantage to the Yanks. Then again, it was the Tigers who beat them.

Jameson's 12 Year Old for me. Used to be called "1780".

Business has picked up in the last week, but I expect the desperate New Yorkers will now jump on the Mets bandwagon, and start doing their own laying about again. Lately I have been doing all the laying about anyway, so the others are on standby.

Peter K (Fionn) is making a play for an associate's position with all this laying about that he is doing, but I have warned him that the best he can hope for is fill in status.

That damn Patterson has gotten so damned healthy that it is hard keeping him down. Methinks you and I will have to visit him soon, lay on his couch, fart, drink his beer and watch his TV just to exorcise the demons that are making him so damned active. I hear he is even chasing that goodlooking, increasingly more slender Karen around the house. We need a friggin bored meeting very soon.

Mick

Gotta go with my homeboys, the Tigers!! I've waited a long time for this. If Oakland can win tonight, I'll grant that this could go 7. If the A's lose, this will end in Detroit. I think the Twins were a very tired team in the postseason. Remember they were 15 games down at one point and unable to make any headway against the Tigers. First they had to overcome Chicago.

So I think all that competing wore them out after fighting back from a 15-game deficit. The Tigers are not nearly so tired and Oakland might meet their Waterloo. I'm definitely going with the Tigers.

And if the Tigers get passed Oakland, they'll take the World Series. I don't think anyone in the NL has showed as much grit this season. Leyland has a handle on this team. They go out and play his baseball for him and, as long as they can do what he asks of them, they will win because Leyland knows how to win.

Bless you boys and GO TIGERS!!!

Lagavulin.

Oakland.

The West Coast office of LFPS, Layabouts for Hire & at Large is damn quiet just now. People are actually doing their own lying-about during these games. I'm looking at laying off layabouts. How's business in the East?

OK, pard. It seems to me that a wee wager is in order. Name yer juice. I will take the Tigers. Make it aisy on yerself, ole buddy.

Tigers won last night 5-1. This is a best of 7 series. Two played in Oakland, three in Detroit, two more in Oakland. Look for it to go all seven before the Tiger's send 'em back to the Bay area with their wee tails between their legs.

There was no joy here in Oakland last night. But I think that the A's were just being gentlemen. They wanted to give the Tigers a win before spanking them and sending them home.

Yep, the job he has done is nothing short of phenomenal.

Tigers just turned their fourth double play. They lead 5-0.

Oh, I see that the Sporting News agrees with me. Leyland was chosen as Manager of the Year.

The greatest thing about the Tigers is Jim Leyland, and the hope the team gives to losers like the Pirates (my team, win or lose.) Leyland is one of my favorite managers and should get the Manager Of The Year Award.

Besides, Michigan is mighty close to Wisconsin. The Upper Penninsula should even BE Wisconsin.

I'm with you Big Mick!

It's the American League Championship series, the Tigers just got done spankin' Steinbrenner's superstars, and are up 5 to zip in the first game with Oakland. We are gonna spank those A's and move on to whatever chumps the National League sends us.

There ..... if I can't get a fight out of that, there ain't no fight in you folks ..... LOL.

I do love baseball. I have struggled for years with the fact that my two favorite teams are the Boston Red Sox and my home state Detroit Tigers. If they both had made the playoffs I don't know what I would have done. But here we are, and I'm calling the Tigers all the way.
