Mr Gubbins,

Thanks so much for posting the lyrics, thoroughly delightful! I've done a desultory troll about online looking for an author to this song, and thus far come up empty; quelle dommage, as it really is terrific.

We just love this sort of stuff in my family. My mother was raised in England by her grandparents during WWII, and acquired a great many tunes from her grand-dad, who had done some music-hall as a young man, and we were raised on it as children. Everyone seems to go back to Peter Sellers for this one, but he had to have got it from somewhere, no? The Mudcat is invariably the best place to come with these sorts of questions, as they are almost always solved (even if it takes some time), so I'm confident we'll get to the bottom of it yet.

And Murray--I'm with you: this whole business of Google slashing and burning its way through YouTube is the height of foolishness, especially for the interests of the artists shown there. Anyone seeing the clip of Norma Waterson singing 'Black Muddy River,' for instance, would go looking for more.

~D

This is lovely - many thanks, Desdemona.

Could anyone supply the chords, please?

There's a three song Sandy Denny BBC video on Youtube and the BBC kept demanding it be taken down, and it would keep re-appearing. It's still there to this day.

mr Gubbins, I don't distrust you for one minute, but that link doesn't actually accredit Sammy Fain with having written the song in question.

"I haven't told her, she hasn't told me"

I've got a clock that wakes me
every morning for my day
I've got a corn that gives me
warning when it's going to rain.
I've got a dream that's coming true,
I've got a sweety in view

I'm as happy as can be, 'cause I've
fallen in love with a girl you see
I haven't told her, she hasn't told me
But we know it just the same.

Saturday night on her settee
Oh what a time there's going to be
I haven't told her, she hasn't told me
But we know it just the same.

She still calls me Mister
But she won't, I know she won't
After I've kissed her

I've got a feeling soon there'll be
One little, two little, possibly three
I haven't told her, she hasn't told me
But we know it just the same.

Sammy Fain wrote the song and here's some information on him

Sammy Fain

countess Richard has just pushed one of my buttons there.

I have been watching Youtube almost since its inception, and this intolerance of so-called copyright breach is the most insane, self-destructive policy I have ever witnessed.

When will the copyright holders get it into their thick heads that exposure on YouTube is one of the most beneficial and potentially lucrative pieces of free advertising they could hope for ?

I have seen so many brilliant videos disappear through "terms of use violation", does it ever occur to the copyright holders that if they allowed just 50% of the video to be seen and put up a link to buy the product online, their sales would rocket?

Priceless? Well no. Presumably Free Reed paid the price of a licence when Carthy Chronicles was published in 2001. I expect Neil Wayne is really thrilled that the vid's up on YouTube for all to look at gratis.

Google was adamant that they wouldn't tolerate copyright breaches when they acquired YouTube a few months ago. I wonder how much longer it's going toi stay up.

Glad to have it confirmed, Murray, and that my ears are better than I thought :-)

I agree it would sound odd in Carthy's famous alternative tuning. Might be interesting to try it though :-)

Btw, does anyone know who wrote the song? I know it from Peter Sellers (his was accompanied solely by uke, played by himself I believe) and Clinton Ford's versions, but I believe it dates back to the early 20th century. Anyone know any more about its history?

Carthy certainly is playing in standard tuning on this track.

Actual key is D but he is capoed up two frets and playing in C.

It would be difficult (if not impossible) to capture the appropriate vaudeville flavour of the tune in anything other than standard tuning, I feel ...

Yes, Desdemona, thanks for the link.

One thing that interested me is that it sounded to me as if Martin C was (unusually, for him) playing in standard tuning - can anyone else confirm this?

Dear Everyone (except "Ed"!),

Thanks for being so gracious and civil, which is the attitude that *I've* always expected on Mudcat. I can honestly say that in several years of posting here, this was the first time I've ever received such a boorish response. While I admit it took me aback momentarily, my gut feeling is that people who need to resort to belittling others in order to bolster their woefully fragile egos are to be viewed with sympathy rather than rancour. Imagine how sad it must be to have nothing better to do than pick other people apart over trifles. For my part, I've never had any trouble admitting that I haven't seen or don't know about something; it means an opportunity to learn, if there's someone kind enough to teach me.

Anyway, thanks again for being NICE (an all too often underrated quality, I fear); I'm glad that those of you hadn't had the pleasure enjoyed the video!

~D

Hi Desdemona,

I am sure you will extend the same polite forgiveness to our 'Guest Ed' as you would to a puppy who had just peed on the carpet ... though my feelings are that he/she is not really not worthy of such consideration.

Thanks for the link, it was new to me also,

Dave

I'm with you, Desde - nil illigitimum carborundum, as they may have said (or something approximately equivalent. Keep posting, ignore these "guests."

Despite owning the Carthy Chronicles, I had never watched the video till I saw your post.

Ed,

Thanks for the smarmy response; it must be great to be you (whoever you are). *I* had not previously seen it, thought it charming, and imagined that others might as well...mea maxima culpa for my naivete, but you don't need to thank me for what I imagine is an all-too-rare opportunity for you to feel superior to someone...anyone...

You're welcome!

Dunno if anyone's seen this

No one in the entire world has ever seen this, Desdemona. Congratulate yourself on your brilliance.

In fact it was re-released in 2001 as part of the Carthy Chronicles, and has been mentioned here (and elsewhere) numerous times.

Thanks for bringing us up to date

Ed
