Subject: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwick From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Jan 04 - 01:58 PM Well, not strictly in Harlow, it's in Eastwick, on the A414, just North of Harlow on the Hertfordshire side of the County Boundary. Until recently we had a monthly session there, in The Lion. Then it stopped for various reasons, partly because the landlord wanted to get the legal situation for music sorted out. Anyway as from now there's music every Tuesday evening - first and third is sort of Old Timey, second Tuesday is folk night, and it was decided to resurrect the old name "Harlow Folk Club"; and the fourth Tuesday will be more bluesy and maybe jazz. No amps says the landlord, which he reckons will keep it legal. So this Tuesday 13th January is first night back together. It'll be basically tunes, largely Irish, and songs and perhaps the odd poem, and we'll see what happens. Starts around 8.30. Here's a map showing where Eastwick is. |

Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: Leadfingers Date: 11 Jan 04 - 02:57 PM I know a VERY odd poem, but Harlow is a tidy walk and clashes with what is left of Uxbridge on a Tuesday night. Best of luck with it any way. |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: Jeanie Date: 11 Jan 04 - 03:54 PM Thanks for the info, McGrath. I won't be able to get to the Jan. or Feb. folk Tuesdays, but will hopefully be at the March one on March 9th, and will try and get to some of the bluesy, jazzy, old timey ones in betweenwhiles. (I know some extremely odd poems, too). - jeanie |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Jan 04 - 07:33 PM Simon - Dave Bryant should be coming along, so if he's picking up Derek that could mean a lift for you. Otherwise I should be able to help. I'm relying on you for the odd poems! (I'm more one for the odd songs.) |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 12 Jan 04 - 06:39 AM Just got a note through the door - a second "Harlow Folk Club" looming, with a Burns Night "evening of Scottish Song" in Harlow Council Social Club, Freshwaters on Sat 24th Jan, with Cabbie Drinnan, John Hammond and Sarah Ross, £6 entry. Let a hundred flowers bloom. |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: GUEST,harlowpoet Date: 12 Jan 04 - 08:20 AM I'd rather we had two folk clubs than none |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: Essex Girl Date: 12 Jan 04 - 08:55 AM My sons stomach bug permitting I'll be there. And if Cabbie Drennan is down on 24th January we'll try to make that night too. Having been involved with Harlow folk club during the sixties it's good to see it thriving again. |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: Dave Bryant Date: 12 Jan 04 - 12:37 PM As Linda says above, we're planning to be there tomorrow night - Derek Brown asked us when he was staying with us over Christmas. If she can't make it - I'll have to come on my own. The Lion's a nice little boozer selling a good pint of MacMullen's AK - which is one of my favourite session beers. Mind you - I still haven't seen the witches ! Simon if you want a lift, get in touch with Derek and sort out the details and we can pick you both up. Kevin - I agree with you - you are an odd singer :-) |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: GUEST,harlowpoet Date: 12 Jan 04 - 01:03 PM Cheers Dave, I'll speak to Derek. Re Kevins songs. I would describe his marmite song as seminal myself. Ever since hearing it, I haven't been able to walk down a supermarket aisle without checking whether the marmite is actually with the jam |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: jacqui c Date: 12 Jan 04 - 07:13 PM Hi all I'm finally out from under the wire - I've escaped my daughter's ministrations and shall be starting to get out and about a bit. The 24th sounds interesting and I might try to make that one. Won't do the folk night this month but will try for February. |

Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 Jan 04 - 11:44 AM Simon - Derek phoned last night and said that he's getting a lift from Kevin - so I assume you will as well. |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwic From: Dave Bryant Date: 13 Jan 04 - 11:54 AM Breezy - The tunes will tend to be Irish or English (rather than Old Timey) - the songs can be anything. Anyway I've got no shortage of Irish material - I started off with an Irish group - and then worked in Dublin for over a year. Now who was the strange guy from Catford Folk Club who I got the words of "Step it out Mary" from over 30 years ago . . . . .. |
Subject: RE: Harlow (UK) - music in The Lion, Eastwick From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 13 Jan 04 - 12:22 PM "The tunes will tend to be Irish or English" And from time to time Scottish, of course. Or from further afield. |
