Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Julie B Date: 28 Aug 03 - 06:29 AM Question for Hull catters: Are there any town centre pubs you'd particularly recommend for good/cheap food? I know Durty Nellies do the 'two meals for a fiver' deals - are there any other good ones? Julie B |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: GUEST Date: 28 Aug 03 - 06:40 AM There is "eat all you can for £5.95" chinese buffet on Jameson Street |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Cavia_P Date: 28 Aug 03 - 06:50 AM Julie, The Three John Scotts is a Weatherspoons pub at the corner of Lowgate and Alfred Gelder St. They serve real Ale and generous portions of good food at very reasonable prices, inc. two meals for one price deals. Their Treacle Sponge is especially recommended! The Olde White Harte certainly used to do some good food but it's been a while since I've tried them so I can't comment on price or quality. The Minerva does good grub but it's likely to be busy this weekend! If you like Chinese, the May Sum buffet restaurant opened recently on Saville St (just outside the old town off Queens Gardens). This might be helpful: It's a bit out of date but most of the comments still apply, and the usual suspects can probably answer specific queries. Regards, Cavia_P Shanty singing Meerschweinenschen |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Oaklet Date: 28 Aug 03 - 02:21 PM The Winteringham Fields in nearby erm...Winteringham does a special "eat all you can for a grand". But you can use the helipad for nothing. |

Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Bassic Date: 30 Aug 03 - 05:39 AM Fabulous singing and athmosphere in the Old White Hart at the welcome "do" last night. It was fascinating watching the faces of each song leader as the 100 or so voices joined in the chorus and made a "wall of sound". Big grins all round :-). |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Abuwood Date: 02 Sep 03 - 04:07 AM Too true Bassic, a golden evening - singing there was like floating on a fluffy cloud...... |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Steve Parkes Date: 02 Sep 03 - 04:41 AM A very loud fluffy cloud -- I had to turn my hearing aid down! I think I managed to pick up the choruses I wasn't familar with -- it's very difficult to lip-read someone with a beard. What great weekend. Can I book now for next year? And particular thanks to Les for the hospitality. I'm going to lie down and rest my voice now, and practice my bones. Steve |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: John Routledge Date: 02 Sep 03 - 05:08 AM Well done Hull. What a great atmosphere over the whole weekend. The White Hart deserves special mention. 30 odd of us went back on Saturday night for an encore. There even was an amazing bones workshop with about 15 students an three "tutors" Great stuff. |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Bassic Date: 02 Sep 03 - 09:34 AM Well done to all involved, organisers, artists and visitors and locals. This weekend was the first time I have had the chance to properly sample the athmosphere of the festival in my own home town and I have to say it was teriffic. It was especialy nice to hear and see contibutions from outside the UK but still definately from the "tradition". There also seemed to be a good responce from the general public in Hull to the invasion of their usual weekend drinking haunts!! Very few puzzled looks and lots of big grins, curious noses pressed against crowded pub windows and lots of joining in with the familiar choruses. Well done Hull. Roll on next year:-) |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Skipper Jack Date: 02 Sep 03 - 09:37 AM It was a great weekend! Full marks to the floor singers who filled the gaps between the guest spots at The Minerva singaround on Saturday & Sunday. It was a delight to perform on the main stage on the quayside and having the audience wholeheartedly joining in the choruses. Hull Sea Fever - one of the best yet! Here's to 2004! Dave R. |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: old git Date: 02 Sep 03 - 10:36 AM the Roaring Forties echo those sentiments!! |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Steve Parkes Date: 02 Sep 03 - 12:03 PM I thought the guest spots were to fill the gaps between the floor singers...! I was chuffed to sing a couple of songs and not hear anyone else sing them! And pleased to find my "Crabfish" was a version of one given in Stan Hugil's book, since it had no other sea connection at all, apart fro the crab ... I got it personally from Sean Cannon, you know! Steve |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 02 Sep 03 - 12:53 PM Brilliant weekend - just sorry to have missed the Friday night sing in the White Hart but made the Saturday one. |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Julie B Date: 03 Sep 03 - 11:35 AM ...yes, really enjoyed it. I've been playing the CD I won in Friday night's raffle (ok, so I did help sell the tickets, but I won it fair and square, honest!!!) by the Sheringham Shantymen. Very good. Incidentally, if anyone spots a letter on the letters page of the Hull Daily Mail from a Julie B of Milton Keynes, could you let me know? Ta. Julie B |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: GUEST,guest Date: 03 Sep 03 - 03:18 PM are all these positive comments being passed to Hull City Council? because that's how ensure another Sea Fever -- positive comments to important ears. |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Les from Hull Date: 03 Sep 03 - 04:05 PM Good point Guest of Guests. Our City Council (ably financed by such as me!) provide this low-cost entertainment each year, and although there are no plans to cease in the future, friendly encouragement would help if it ever becomes a choice between the Shanty Festival and something else. We (the Citizens of the Fair City of Kingston upon Hull) know that this is a useful way of getting people to visit. I'll try to find an appropriate email link. Les Pretender to the Throne of Hull. |

Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Steve Parkes Date: 04 Sep 03 - 11:35 AM I'd been meaning to ask ... the Sunday night "Survivors' session" was advertised as "an informal singaround", but it was all rather formal, with chairs in rows and all the celebs being introduced to do one song. Julie & I left before the end; did it turn into a proper singaround later? The venue had ben changed from the Law Courts to the Maritime Museum, so maybe that had a bearing? Steve |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Skipper Jack Date: 04 Sep 03 - 12:21 PM Steve, Yes it was rather formal for an advertised singaround and that was how it continued to the end. Maybe the opulent surroundings of the "Court Room" was not the ideal venue for a singaround? I understand that you sang at some of the singarounds at the Minerva. Was it at any of the sessions that I compered? Dave Robinson. |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Steve Parkes Date: 04 Sep 03 - 12:24 PM I think it may have been, Dave. 5'8", moustache, Walsall accent (NOT Brummie!), sitting next to Julie B; and possibly wearing a silly hat:that was me! Steve |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Skipper Jack Date: 05 Sep 03 - 03:42 AM Steve, Mmm! Silly hat eh? I'm none the wiser. I must have seen and heard you if you were in the Minerva between 11.30am and 2.00pm on Saturday or if you were there on Sunday from 3.00pm until 5.00pm.? Dave R. |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Steve Parkes Date: 05 Sep 03 - 03:55 AM Ah -- Saturday morning we were there pretty early. I sang a couple of songs "from the wrong side of the Pennines". Sunday we didn't get there till late in the afternoon ... |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Julie B Date: 05 Sep 03 - 06:03 AM Hi Dave, Are you Dave Robinson? Steve and I were there from the very beginning of your Sat am session. I sang "A brisk young sailor courted me" and "I am a Rambling Irishman". You also spoke briefly to Steve & I outside the Minerva about 4.30pm on Sunday. Does that help?!! Cheers, Julie |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Julie B Date: 05 Sep 03 - 06:04 AM ...apologies; yes you are Dave Robinson - you said so earlier! |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Steve Parkes Date: 05 Sep 03 - 08:18 AM Julie: "Steve and me". I've already had to speak to you about this!! Steve (My memory for recent events may be going west, but there's nothing wrong with my grammar!) |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Steve Parkes Date: 05 Sep 03 - 08:38 AM ... nad my memory for names and faces! |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Skipper Jack Date: 05 Sep 03 - 09:24 AM Ah yes! Steve and Julie Now I remember you both! Thank you for your fine contribution to the singaround sessions. That goes for all the floor singers. Kind regards. Dave R. |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Michael in Swansea Date: 05 Sep 03 - 09:29 AM Julie and Steve, So, Saturday morning I sat at the same table as you, can't remember a silly hat though. I sang "Boston Harbour", "Blackball Line" and "Leefore Brace". Do you think Dave worked us hard? :-) Michael |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Julie B Date: 05 Sep 03 - 01:00 PM Hiya Michael, Yes, I know you. Were you at the festival last year too, because I'm sure I recognised you from somewhere else? We also said hello to each other at the Maritime Museum on Sunday evening just as Steve and I left at the interval. The only trouble with a weekend of wall-to-wall singing is that we don't get the chance to chat as much as we might like, so it's a good thing we have the Mudcat! As for Steve's hat, he only wore it on the Sunday - a wide brimmed khaki "Tilley" style hat. I'm afraid I had to insist he took it off as we walked back to the hotel at 1am Sunday night through a rowdyish Hull centre, lest it attract unwanted attention! :) Julie |
Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 05 Sep 03 - 01:51 PM 'Fraid I didn't knowingly meet any unknown 'catters although I did stick my head into the Minerva (the rest wouldn't fit) on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Subject: RE: Hull UK Sea Fever 2003 From: GUEST,Julie B Date: 13 Sep 03 - 09:06 AM Hi Anne, Thanks for that! Yes, it was the noise from an event in Queen's Gardens. Steve & I were discussing it with Maggie & Les on the Sunday night and I decided to raise the issue directly with the Council and also e-mail the Hull Daily Mail. I got a letter back from Hull Council yesterday, and will type the contents up later in a "BS" thread and put a link to it from here. Cheers, Julie |
