Subject: Lyr Add: THE BARD OF ARMAGH (Jim Brannigan) From: katlaughing Date: 02 Aug 07 - 04:17 PM It is my pleasure to share with you a tribute to Tommy Makem written and performed recently by Jim (Lad) Brannigan. You may listen to it at myspace: Click Here "The Bard of Armagh" Come all ye brave comrades who sit at my table I'll tell you the news now I fear it won't keep For he who is master of legend and fable Has closed his poor eyelids forever in sleep. For the hall stands deserted. The music is over The chairs neatly folded, the lights dimmed and gone And all who have known him from Keady to Dover Their heads bowed in sorrow, their hearts all forlorn. No more does the lark soar so high in the morning. No more does the curlew bestow his soft call The blackbird is hushed and the white dove in mourning For one who is silent, the best of us all. And high in the heavens the angels stand ready Their voices in chorus, the harps all in tune And light now the heart of one sweet gentle lady To know that her loved one is coming home soon So come all lads and lassies who sit at my table Come rich man come beggar from near and from far Then raise up your glasses and drink if you're able To the bold Tommy Makem, The bard of Armagh. Thanks, Jim. It is beautiful. kat |

Subject: RE: A Tribute to Tommy Makem from Jim Lad From: Jeri Date: 05 Aug 07 - 03:18 PM Frank, Jim said he took it down (it was up for 3+ days) this morning. The original song is the Bard of Armagh, the tune is basically the Streets of Laredo. Original song and tune in the DT Good song, Jim. More sad than anything else, but a lot of people are going to connect with that feeling. |
Subject: RE: A Tribute to Tommy Makem from Jim Lad From: Ref Date: 05 Aug 07 - 05:14 PM Just beautiful, Jim. Thanks to Kat. On a sad and ridiculous note, the New York Times obituary described "Four Green Fields" as "...a song about an old woman whose sons died trying to stop someone from stealing her land." Screw 'em. We'll remember Tommy. |
Subject: RE: A Tribute to Tommy Makem from Jim Lad From: Jim Lad Date: 05 Aug 07 - 05:47 PM I was sure it was about the French Revolution, that and "Green Fields of France". Now I've been known to be wrong once in a while but not this time. |
Subject: mp3 of Tommy Makem's The Curlew Song From: GUEST,Maireid Sullivan, Melbourne, Australia Date: 06 Aug 07 - 12:31 AM My small offering in tribute to the great Tommy Makem RIP Please feel free to download and share my rendition of Tommy Makem's sad, yet beautifully poignant "The Curlew's Song". (the spoken intro. is a short Yeats poem) http://maireid.com/Never_Drift_Apart/5.The_Curlew.mp3%20 THE LYRICS: The Curlew's Song by Tommy Makem and W.B. Yeats' poem, 'He Reproves the Curlew' He Reproves the Curlew By W.B. Yeats Oh! Curlew! Cry no more in the air or only to the water in the west. Because your crying brings to my mind passion dimmed eyes and long heavy hair, that was shaken out over my breast. There is enough evil in the crying of the wind. The Curlew's Song By Tommy Makem I heard a Curlew singing low On a moor where wild winds blew. And the sound of his sad lonesome song Made me feel lonesome too. Cold winter came and the moorland froze The winds blew loud and strong I of'times have gone through the snow And heard a Curlew song. Soft sun-warmed days of summer came Through green-leaved days of spring I soon forgot that lonesome song I heard the Curlew sing |
Subject: RE: A Tribute to Tommy Makem from Jim Lad From: Greg B Date: 06 Aug 07 - 07:09 PM JimLad, have you taken the recording down? I sent it to a mate of mine at work as an illustration of just how good the human voice could sound, yet it wasn't there on the page. He's an expert in the field of musical synthesis--- I wanted to show him that there's sometimes no substitute for the organic and primitive. |
Subject: RE: A Tribute to Tommy Makem from Jim Lad From: pattyClink Date: 06 Aug 07 - 07:38 PM Ref-- the reporter originally said he was known for such songs as Green Fields of France! I went to the AP site and gave them a correction to Four Green Fields. Was delighted to see they made the change later in the day (how many others jumped on them about it, I wonder) and he had stuck in the new bit about the lady and her fields. Sigh. He made such a speedy effort to fix it, I just couldn't whine about it again. An ancient aunt who turned me on to a lot of good ballads told me she loved the song for years before someone finally told her it was about the four provinces. She thought it was about the 4 gravesites of her sons. Oh well, even the best of us get confused. |
Subject: RE: A Tribute to Tommy Makem from Jim Lad From: Jim Lad Date: 06 Aug 07 - 09:07 PM I'll stick it back on until Thursday then. I'm starting the album tonight so maybe I'll have another song for you before I lie down. Regards. Jim |
