Subject: Holmfirth Festival of Folk 2007 part two
From: Tyke
Date: 22 Apr 07 - 07:17 PM

This years Holmfirth Festival of Folk will be held on 11th, 12th, and 13th May 2007.

There will be lots going on again, including concerts by Chumbawamba, The John Richards Band, Kate Bramley, Emily Druce, Gordon Tyrrall , Brian Peters , The Red Parrots and many many more.
Workshops for all ages, a family Ceilidh led by the Good Egg Band and lots of Morris sides (including the famous Britannia Coconut Dancers from Bacup) are all adding to this great weekend of talent and fun.

Holmfirth, heart of Last of the Summer Wine Country, will also be vibrant and entertaining with the usual lively musician sessions and sing-arounds found in the many pubs and hotels etc throughout the weekend.
Local and nearly local bands; Old Man Pie, The Travelling Billberets and Free Sandwiches will doing their stuff and The Shellback Chorus will be filling the streets and venues with their powerful harmonies.

This is a real village festival amongst some of the most stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Pennines .
The fact that it is village based means that everything (including camping) is only a short stroll away.
The abundance of excellent pubs, clubs, hotels, restaurants, take-aways, shops, B&Bs, and of course the festival concert venues etc makes this a very convenient, convivial and easy going festival with a really great friendly atmosphere.

Ned Ludd is almost right - Emily can't appear on Saturday which is why the Ugly Mug Jug Band are on at Carniceria.
However - she will be on with Steve Jones on Sunday afternoon.
Programmes at printer as I write and should be out and for sale on Friday. Same price as last year (£1) but lots more pages. We have page inflation but not price inflation - (thinks - must have a word with Gordon about that).

Wots this got to do with it read on
Mass trespass of Kinder Scout
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Commemorative plaque at Bowden Bridge QuarryThe mass trespass of Kinder Scout was a notable act of willful trespass by ramblers. It was undertaken at Kinder Scout, in the Peak District of England, on 24 April 1932, to highlight weaknesses in English law of the time. This denied walkers in England or Wales access to areas of open country, and to public footpaths which, in previous ages (and today), formed public rights of way. Political and conservation activist Benny Rothman was one of the principal leaders.

A commemorative plaque now marks the start of the trespass at Bowden Bridge quarry near Hayfield (which is now a popular area for ramblers). This was unveiled in April 1982 by an aged Benny Rothman during a rally to mark the 50th anniversary. The trespass proceeded via William Clough to the plateau of Kinder Scout, where there were violent scuffles with gamekeepers. Several ramblers were arrested and some would receive jail sentences of 18 months, merely for diverging a few yards from a right-of-way.

The mass trespass had a far-reaching impact, some of which is still playing out today. Eventually, changes in the law would allow all citizens access to public footpaths, regardless of whether they crossed private land. This culminated in the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, which legislates a limited right to roam over scheduled access land (see Open Country).

Ewan MacColl, the poet and folk singer, celebrated these events in his song The Manchester Rambler, and it is also the subject of a song onChumbawamba's 2005 album A Singsong and a Scrap. Today week marks the 75th anniversary of the mass trespass on Kinder Scout.

Programmes should be available to buy from tomorrow at the Tourist Info in Holmfirth and some of the shops and pubs.

Names still being added to the list - Abelungu, an African drumming trio from Sowerby Bridge will be playing at the Y Bar from about 6 - 7 on Saturday teatime.

A couple of things to take off the list of earlier announcements - the Rowan knitting workshop won't happen so no need to polish up your knitting songs and unfortunately the hugely talented young group 4 Square can't make the Saturday gig so another hugely talented young duo - James Meadows and Steve Lacey will take their place.

Tyke has got his itinerary sorted and will be a very busy boy on Saturday but can relax after Chumbawamba at the Civic.

I notice that James and Mayer are doing a Jake Thackray show at Birds Edge this Sunday but don't forget that we have our own Jake Thackray Experience performed by very talented Jake enthusiasts - that will be on the Saturday night of the festival at the Old Bridge.

What a silly girl I am! (Ignore loud chorus of 'Oh yes you are!")

Of course Seth Lakeman isn't coming to Holmfirth.

I misunderstood an email I was sent and the true story is the a group of pupils from a local primary school have learnt his song 'The White Hare' and will be performing it in the Schools' Concert on Saturday lunchtime and at the Young Persons' Open Mic on Saturday afternoon. So he will be there in spirit but not in person.

So, should you read this thread Seth, sorry and we won't be expecting you after all.

Good thinking denying everything Cath let's stop this rumour otherwise we will be needing extra security. I was singing with Coblers Monday in Scarborough on the Grand Turk to raise funds for Lifeboat Day about three years ago when we where mistaken for a Boy Band. There were all these young girls screaming it was so frightening. These days I'm dying my beard grey and wearing a false beer belly just in case it should happen again.

" Willie's Fatal Visit "

It's not the whole song but don't worry about not hearing the end till you see them at Holmfirth festival of Folk I'm sure it will be a happy ending because you just cannot keep a good Willie down.

Check them out on thier updated website of the 1st of May.

A few of us spent a couple of hours yesterday morning in the Co-op in Holmfirth packing bags for the shoppers - whether they wanted us to or not. For this they were expected to reward us handsomely which they did - we collected over £150, a magnificent result which will go towards the costs of the festival.
The more people we speak to the more we realise we did the right thing by keeping the festival in Holmfirth so get over to the valley next Friday, Saturday and Sunday and join us.
We won't be able to pack your bags in the Co-op though because we'll be busy doing other things!

If you come in from Huddersfield via Honley you can't miss it. It's on the left just opposite the health centre and before you get right into the town.

If you fly South from Huddersfield it's 53 o .34'33 N by 1 o .46.51 W
on Google Earth.
Just follow the stream down from the Coop car park past the cricket pitch then it's the Next Football Field. If you cross the stream via the bridge you will find a small service road down to the campsite. I seem to think that by car coming from Huddersfield it's the next left after the Police Station. Don't bob down to the swimming pool car park as the service road is on you right on the bend near the top. It's before the tenis courts and the childrens play area.

Tyke, I've tried the Google Earth facility but my browser doesn't seem able to cope! What I would really like is the postcode of the campsite, or one for the nearest building such as the Health Centre. Isn't Sat-Nav wonderful!!!

I've found several likely contenders (HD9 3JL, HD9 2JN, HD9 3TR, HD9 3TT, HD7 2TT) but perhaps someone can suggest which is the most accurate?

Just to avoid any possible confusion - the site is where it used to be near the Swimming Pool and the recreation ground.
It is not where it was moved to out at Holmbridge.
It is where it was last year and about 5 minutes walk from the town centre and all amenities.
And word is that it will be pretty full so let's hope everybody is friendly and considerate!

Coming in from Denby Dale look for the Civic on the Huddersfield road and then out past the fire station

The Sands is by the swimming pool but take the first track down

Mind the Bridge with your Caravan and also the Sleeping Policemen can be very awkward if you have a low draught

Note the Office is in the Old Bridge which is in the very Centre of Holmfirth and from where tickets etc will be very likely!!

There is a very useful path from the town centre car park by the Supermarket past the cricket field coming back from the Sands camp
site (approach back of fire station by the foundry)

Watch car parking in the town as Sunday is NOT free being a tourist area

Leave your cars on the camp site!
