What are Mudcatters scared of? I'm terrified of moths, craneflies, heights, bangs, things coming close to my face, thunderstorms etc., but I am managing to conquer my arachnophobia!

Well, I used to be terrified of wasps, hornets, etc. It blighted my youth. I have finally mostly gotten over that...I still don't like them all that much, but I remain calm in their presence now.

I have discovered that if you fear anything, it keeps coming into your life again and again and again...until you finally face the fear and put it to rest. So there you are.

I'm afraid of flying too, but that doesn't stop me from doing it.

slugs, worms or anything without a shell. Snails are fine, they have shells. This one is really bad, because I am a gardner too. I have learned to tolerate worms as long as no one chases me with them, but slugs will put me in the middle of the kitchen table, and Wyoming slugs are REALLY little. I just about lost it reading the Harry Potter book where the boy has a bout of vomiting up.....uh never mind.

And I go berserk if I'm held down/locked up.

Rattlesnakes. They grow big around here by the American River. I've only seen one in the twenty years I've been here, but it gets bigger every time I talk about it. The people across the street have the river behind them, and they get snakes in their yards a few times a year. I'm glad I live on this side of the street, even though they have a terrific view.

Well, Joe, I kinda guess you could say snakes don't have shells, huh? I definitely have a HEALTHY respect for the suckers, and I won't go hunting them for sure! We have our share here too, and this is a bad year for them (well, good if you look at it from their point of veiw) because it is so hot and dry. They are coming to the rivers for moisture because there has been so little rain. It only seems to rain/lightning when I want to go Hearme............

Sharks. I used to have to swim home at night if I was the the last of 3 to call it a evening, we only had 2 dingys. The swim was about a 1/4 - 1/3 of a mile offshore & at 2:oo pm (when the bars closed or the music stopped) it would always start to get spooky about half way home. It was always comforting when I knew that dolphins were seen swimming close by. Always had a change of clothes & a swim suit in the car & could spend the night in it too if things got to spooky. If you asked a shark the same question they'd say dolphins, if you asked a dolphin they'd say not having any sharks around to have fun with. Barry

I used to like dolphins, too. Until I watched some news show about male dolphins grabbing swimmers with their penises (?!) and swimming underwater with them. That's just weird. It makes me glad I don't swim. That, and those tiny fish swim up men's urethras and die. Hey, I've got TWO new fears!

I have heard the little fishes thing before - some south american river species? - no one has ever explained why the do it though. go Dolphins !! - just revenge for making them jump through hoops to amuse tourists

'there is no such thing as bad publicity' - how much hard disc contains oasis now - ok so a bit more now - well done Mbo are you on commission?

Heights scare me like Lepus-Rex its more the perceived safety rather than the height. Ladders, Ledges, Scaffolding no way!
my garden has very big black slugs and there is no way I could touch one
But hey the most scary thing on the earth is people. What terrible things people do to each other in the name of religion, colour, sexuality, oh any old difference is the thing of nightmares

Being in a room that is totally silent... I will go up the wall with hysteria if I have to sit in silence for longer than about 20 mins. That's why there is a radio in every room and I have 2 portables....

Perhaps that's why I didn't do so well at exams.... all that silence..... I guess I'm terrified of going deaf. I had limited hearing in one ear until I was about 8, and had to go through lots of tests to determine why (malformed ear tube.... got better with age and a doctor who wasn't more keen on horse racing than health issues...)

Oddly enough,it doesn't bother me performing; and I don't mind moderating the local town meeting or speaking to a crowd.

But going to a cocktail party and going to the dentist are about on a par for me.

Ooh...Lepus, I'm with you...HATE being held down, for any reason. If I have to, I'll hold myself down, say for a shot or something...but I don't want ANYONE else to do it for me. And to be held down and tickled is enough to make me come out kicking...aiming for the most sensitive places!

Have no particular phobias about anything else. Started to take a class in overcoming phobias...that's when I found out that I don't really have any. I don't like spiders, but I have no trouble killing them, if they're in my house...if I'm outside, I simply avoid them if I can. REALLY HATE Palmetto bugs,(for those of you who have never lived in Florida, Palmettos are huge flying cockroaches), but I can certainly beat the crap out of them if I have to. Have never found a use for mosquitoes or ticks...except as annoyances for people and animals. Snakes...not fond of them, but can look at and touch them without panicking.

I like flying, but I don't want to learn how to pilot a plane. A little squeamish about high ledges, etc., but not enough that I'd go nuts if I found myself on one. Would just try NOT to look down! I don't like elevators, (particularly crowded ones), but I do ride on them if need be. Prefer escalators. Of course, being relatively phobia-free doesn't mean I'm completely calm or sane either...

Hey, I'm scared of bears too! Forgot about that. I think the best way to deal with them is to make a certain amount of noise, so they can hear you from a long way off...a bell, singing, whatever...they hear you and go the other way and you don't meet them unexpectedly. I think I may just have had a nasty encounter with a bear in one or more "previous" lives, if you know what I mean.

Liz - you're scared of a silent room??? My God, woman, how will you ever meditate and get in touch with your inner self if the damn radio and TV are going all the time? If I had a TV here, I'd shoot it and give it a decent burial in the back yard. As for the radio, it makes a good paperweight for my sheet music.

Oh, well, different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Aaagh! I fear hitting the 'clear entries' box instead of the 'submit message box' after writing a few paragraphs! Here I go again...

Needles! I forgot about my old fear of needles. I'm over it now, but when I was a kid, I'd fight and struggle with doctors trying to take my blood. And dentists had to put me under with gas before putting a needle in my mouth, or I'd shove them away and flee. Good thing I'm over that one. I'd probably get arrested for that now...

And the dolphins... I saw the video of it on Dateline NBC or something like that, a few years ago. Dolphin penises are apparently huge and curved, and it just hooked this around the swimmer's leg like a manacle.

And the little, eurethra-loving fishes... This only happens to men who pee while swimming in the river. If I remember right, they instinctively swim upstream. When they detect the man's 'stream,' they swim right up it, but can't turn back. They have backward curving spines, so can't swim backwards, and just lodge themselves deeper into the poor guy. They die, of course. Infection, surgery... Horror.

Waaiiit... Maybe we could put these in swimming pools? Keep 'em clean? >:)

Being afraid of the level of violence I might rise to if I saw someone mistreating a child or an animal.

Going back to working in bars and having to take orders from bar owners. (now there, I KNOW the level of violence I could rise to)

Silent rooms - I can be as quiet as all get out when I'm outside, in the garden, on the beach etc, mainly because the great outdoors is never truly silent, but because walls block those sounds, I get the screaming phantods.... the thought of never hearing another sound ever...... urrrrgghghghgghgghgh!

I would guess my other phobia is boredom. My idea of hell is to be on a cruise ship, nothing to do but nothing, nowhere to go but the ship..... shoot me in the head now!!
