Subject: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST,Salty Dog Date: 21 Feb 02 - 01:18 PM I'm spending a bit of time in Shropshire and looking for somewhere to go where the company is friendly, the beer is good and the music sessions convivial. Where should I go, where will there be warmth and welcome, who should I talk to? |

From: greg stephens Date: 22 Feb 02 - 01:54 AM which part of shropshire, what are your musical tastes? be delighted to point you in the right direction. suggest you locate the Boat Band on the internet and communicate with them, they have Shropshire members. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: alanww Date: 22 Feb 02 - 04:57 AM Try the Charlton Arms - a Good Beer Guide pub - by the river in Ludlow on the third Friday evening of the month for an "Irish music session with some English songs". p> In eithteen hundred and sixty one, roll Alabama roll ... Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: greg stephens Date: 22 Feb 02 - 05:08 AM Have reread your request and I think you mightenjoy the Red Lion in Market Drayton on a thursday. Definitely warmth (a coal fire),conviviality etc. good mix of songs and tunes. no super musicians seeing how fast they can play jigs and reels, so very unthreatening for anyone drifting in and fancying joining in. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Trevor Date: 22 Feb 02 - 06:57 AM Have I mentioned the Bishops Castle folk weekend in the last few days? 24th - 26th May, details from Sally. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: John J Date: 22 Feb 02 - 07:40 AM Ellesmere used to have a lot going on, but I'm not sure of the situation these days. Just over the border in Staffordshire, the Anchor Inn at High Offley, near Woodseaves was once the place to go to sing, drink good beer etc. Shrewsbury has a fair amount of music & song going on. Good luck with your trip to Shropshire, it's a lovely county. John |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: greg stephens Date: 22 Feb 02 - 07:52 AM yes definitely go to the Anchor at High Offley. Music is highly intermittent but it's always worth a visit. Easier to find by boat than driving. And if youre looking for it from Woodseaves, remember to start at the Staffordshire Woodseaves, and not the Shropshire Woodseaves which is quite different, though only five miles away. Confused? You will be. If you're in north Shropshire, try slipping over the Cheshire border and try the Lord Combermere in Audlem on Mondays, i think the session's still going. Good hunting |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST,Salty Dog Date: 22 Feb 02 - 08:01 AM Thanks for the pointers on this. I was thinking of the south of the county in particular but thanks anyway. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST,Salty Dog Date: 22 Feb 02 - 08:02 AM Sorry, I meant to ask before, who's Sally? |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Menita Date: 22 Feb 02 - 08:06 AM Yo Ho Ho Salty Dog - Mr Red is a mine of info-he mentions The Buffalo in Clun (which I think is in Shropshire - Oh yea Shropshire Lad Clunton Clungunford Clun etc) and also The 6 Bells in Bishops Castle- is that the same place as the folkie fest in May? That must be what Trevor was talking about. That should be a nice place to go-they brew beer there! Near there is The miners Arms at Priest Weston and they have a mini fest around Easter. Is that when you're going there? Hope the wind stops blowing by then! |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST,Salty Dog Date: 22 Feb 02 - 08:21 AM Thanks Lucy Ann. I've been to Bishops Castle. Are there any sessions there, apart from this festival? And Clun is a nice place - do you mean they have sessions at The Buffalo as well? |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: greg stephens Date: 22 Feb 02 - 08:22 AM bridgnorth folkfest is aug 23-25 |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST,Salty Dog Date: 22 Feb 02 - 08:23 AM Mr Red? |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Menita Date: 22 Feb 02 - 08:33 AM "Mr. Red" is someone i came across in "song writing" go have a look- he seems very technical. I'm not very good with "big" words but he does have an interesting site with info on various places to go in UK. He's also linked to that F. weekend in Bishops Castle. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Trevor Date: 22 Feb 02 - 09:34 AM You will find Mr Reds site here and useful it is too. There's a session in BC tonight (Friday) by the way, at The Six Bells. I wouldn't ask too many questions about Sally though! |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST,Salty Dog Date: 22 Feb 02 - 10:42 AM Thanks a lot - I might try and make it tonight. What's with this Sally then? |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Watson Date: 11 Mar 02 - 10:35 AM The Clun Session is at the White Horse, not the Buffalo this week (Wednesday 13 March) Sally said so! |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: greg stephens Date: 11 Mar 02 - 07:35 PM Festival Drayton Centre, Market Drayton, March 23. Barn dance with the Boat Band. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST,Salty Dog Date: 12 Mar 02 - 04:38 AM Thanks for the continuing info, but WHO IS SALLY? I stuck my head in The Six Bells the other night and only saw three women who may have been her. One had short grey hair and was singing with a grey-haired bloke with a beard, one was a blonde with a nice voice who sang 'The Dutchman' and the other was a tall woman with reddish hair, who didn't sing and who seemed to be with a bloke wearing glasses. Which one was the famous Sally, Watson? By the way, I like the nom-de-plume; Watson in Shropshire - brilliant, Priceless even. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Watson Date: 12 Mar 02 - 06:46 AM Hmmm... don't recognise her from those descriptions Mind you, I heard her on the radio so how would I know what she looks like? Mental pictures are good though - like the one I have of you sticking your head in six bells... bizarre! |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Trevor Date: 12 Mar 02 - 08:32 AM Hello SD. Why didn't you say hello? |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: greg stephens Date: 12 Mar 02 - 08:43 AM Yes, don't be shy. Come up to Market Drayton, and introduce yourself. Or just sing "Salty Dog"and I'll guess. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: John J Date: 12 Mar 02 - 11:48 AM Greg, your earlier mention of the Anchor at High Offley brought back lovely memories. I was last there 20 years ago. A truly excellent pub that I have camped behind many times, including two Christmases and my stag night. I gather Olive and her daughter are still running the place. It's only 50m from here, I really must make the effort and re-visit. Thansk for re-kindling the memory. John |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Trevor Date: 12 Mar 02 - 11:53 AM BTW, I haven't mentioned the Bishops Castle Folk Weekend, 24th-26th May, for at least ten minutes. BG! |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: greg stephens Date: 12 Mar 02 - 11:58 AM Even if its been 20 years, you'll still recognise the Anchor. Time has passd it by.... |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Tig Date: 12 Mar 02 - 01:18 PM Sally is Mrs Lemon. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST,Salty Dog Date: 14 Mar 02 - 09:53 AM Well I went to Clun last night and couldn't find anything going on. Couldnt even find The White House, let alone any music. Sally Lemon? What's her husband's name, Jack? Ho ho! And Trevor, if you were the bloke playing the saxophone in Bishops Castle its hardly surprising I didnt say hello is it. Blinkin' row |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: greg stephens Date: 14 Mar 02 - 09:56 AM |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Trevor Date: 14 Mar 02 - 10:29 AM Hello Salty, you were looking for the wrong place last night - we were in The White Horse, and a good session it was too. As for the saxophone, no it wasn't me - each to his own I reckon. BTW, Sally must have been out of the room when you 'stuck your head in' 'cos she certainly doesn't fit any of those descriptions you've given. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: GUEST Date: 14 Mar 02 - 10:38 AM Well Mr.Salty Dog must have found another "Clun" - I was in Clun Shropshire last night and I was at the White Horse, not the White House. It was an extremely good session and full of musicians such as Rees Wesson ( from Joe Le Taxi) Chris Yorkie Bartrum (also Joe le Taxi) , John Hayward, Harriet Bartlett, Pat from Cukoo Oak, some of Rapsquillion and the Lemonberries and I think Sally was there too. The locals loved it and want more next week! |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Watson Date: 14 Mar 02 - 10:56 AM The White Horse isn't that difficult to find - well, Clun isn't that big. It was a good session - packed house, good beer, good music and a memorable dance display from the landlord and barmaid! I'd like to say how much we missed you SD... well I'd like to but... |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: greg stephens Date: 14 Mar 02 - 11:13 AM Come on up folks, Red Lion in Market Drayton tonight.Warm welcome to all (no saxophones or bodhrans please) |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Col K Date: 14 Mar 02 - 03:34 PM Does all this talk about a festival in Bisops Castle mean that we are all going to visit Shropshire in May. If so it sounds like we are in for a good time with plenty of lemonade being drunk. What can we drink when the lemonade runs out? I hope Sally and her co-conspirators have an alternative ready for us. See you all in May |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Mr Red Date: 14 Mar 02 - 06:30 PM Lucy Ann Mr Red IS technical - he's an engineer. and as for writing songs about Real Shropshire Lemonade .......... All his Shropshire info is based on Mrs Lemon's reportage plus Nick the Fiddle in Shrewsbury. North of that he don't stray - sorry about that. see fer your self cresby.com |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Trevor Date: 15 Mar 02 - 05:14 AM There is no better alternative in BC than the brews from The Six Bells and The Three Tuns, both of which are venues over the weekend. In fact Nev at The Six Bells is doing an ale for the event - 'Fingerpickers'. Doesn't it just roll off the tongue -"A pint of 'pickers please". Let us know that you're coming though so we can put the kettle on - have a look here, or contact us with this.

Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Trevor Date: 15 Mar 02 - 11:06 AM Col K, Sal's just been muttering something about hot choc and Southern Comfort....... |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Col K Date: 15 Mar 02 - 11:50 PM Large Southern Comfort to start with please, followed by a few more, then perhaps the hot chocolate and someone to tuck me into bed. Sounds like Bishops Castle could be a brilliant weekend, I'm looking foreward to it,are you? See you all there in May |

Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Watson Date: 17 Mar 02 - 12:41 PM This one works But on the other hand, there's a link there with the URL Trevor posted - and that one doesn't work either! |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Guessed Date: 18 Mar 02 - 11:28 AM when all else fails there is a page on cresby.com wot worked at last try ah that's the one Watson. Dare I say "it's a lemon entry my dear Watson"? No I thought not! (can do better - must try harder) |

Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Watson Date: 18 Mar 02 - 01:53 PM Good one Nick - all that and Joe le Taxi on Friday night! Oh, and Mr. Guessed - I believe it is appropriate to say ROTFLMAO! I wouldn't have thought that was typical Black Country humour, but funny, nevertheless! |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Mr Red Date: 18 Mar 02 - 03:34 PM www.bcfolkweekend.co.uk is slow to load from my machine but does eventually. BUT down at the library they have done something to the browser in the name of security so the URL may not work on all browsers. I pointed to it from cresby.com in such a way that you have a back-up resume and the official homepage. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Mr Red Date: 18 Mar 02 - 05:56 PM Herga Kitty just had e-mail from a guy who can't see www.bcfolkweekend.co.uk, he and the library both have firewalls, do you access from work through a firewall? If work and huge network then assume yes! To anybody who cannot see the site, do you access through a firewall or am I making too big an assumption. Now the biggie - is there any advice I can pass on to the webmaster and is their ISP & webspace at Freeserve a factor? cresby.com still works and gives most info. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Watson Date: 19 Mar 02 - 07:10 AM Cresby, When I tried www.bcfolkweekend.co.uk yesterday, I just got the default Freeserve page, but today it's fine, despite a big firewall and corporate LAN being in the way. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Menita Date: 19 Mar 02 - 05:51 PM Watson : bcfolkweekend.co.uk up and running so far as I can see. What a brill idea-cheap weekend and make our own entertainment in pubs that brew their own ale. What more can one want!!! Martin Hugill-his Dad was the last of the Shanty Men you know. |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: Watson Date: 20 Mar 02 - 05:01 AM ...Oh, that Martin Hugill! I think the workshops will be good - do you think they'll service my car? |
Subject: RE: Anything going on in Shropshire? From: sian, west wales Date: 20 Mar 02 - 06:38 AM I've just had a magazine land on my desk - Shreds and Patches - which looks useful (and interesting).
