Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 17 Dec 20 - 02:05 PM My Father who was born in Preston always spoke very highly of Sir Tom Finney. I believe Tom played Left Wing, Inside Left, Centre Forward, Inside Right and Right Wing for England. I have to say I was unaware he had ever played Goalkeeper and to date have been unable to find any reference to this. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 17 Dec 20 - 06:12 PM When I was 13 I was picked for the Thornleigh under-14 cricket team. One day we played Preston Catholic College at their school. I scored 29, the second-highest score of the season, and I was eventually out LBW (it was an unjust decision in m'humble, delivered by their sports teacher) after they'd used ten different bowlers against me. Also in the match I ran one of their lads out with a mighty throw from the square leg boundary, hitting the one stump directly. We won. It got me a mention in the annual school magazine. It was possibly the greatest day of my life. |

Anyone care to guess why Raggytash is like a bear with a sore head |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 19 Dec 20 - 07:05 AM Can you provide any links to information about Tom Finney playing in goal for England. Given that he wasn't a very tall man I would have thought that other outfield players would have been chosen before him. I simply cannot find any reference to him playing in goal. |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: G-Force Date: 19 Dec 20 - 05:42 PM How often does a team score seven and ship seven in the same season? |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 19 Dec 20 - 06:35 PM Well many a pundit has said the same. But the seven today has wiped out Liverpool's less than ideal goal difference. Top goal scoring, best goal diff, top of the Christmas table. Be very afraid, Premier League... And I'll tell you summat else. Every one of those seven goals was a gem. Deny that at your peril! |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 01 Jan 21 - 05:58 PM So only goal difference between Liverpool and Manchester United! Who'd have thought it!! I am not suggesting that I expect United to win the Premiership but I think it might put the wind up a few Scousers and those turncoats from Manchester who support the team. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Jan 21 - 06:32 PM I'm from Radcliffe, which is a lot nearer to Bury, Bolton, Oldham and Rochdale than to Old Trafford, and in any case it's a tribal thing in me family. Man U won't win the league because they are far too immature as a team, they rely far too much on Pogba, Marcus and Bruno, and Ole can't seem to get the consistent best out of the likes of Martial. They're good but not good enough, not yet... |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: MikeL2 Date: 02 Jan 21 - 06:28 AM HI Steve And Raggy Yes we have hit the T0P..... Phew.... It is something that we Man U supporters have been waiting for....too Long. I have watched both Liverpool and United recently and I think that United have improved United have improved quite a lot while Liverpool have dropped off somewhat. I know we have a way to go but they can give it a real go. I think there is some problems in the dressing room with some of their best players are involved. Long way to go yet but I wait expectively...... All the best. Cheers Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 02 Jan 21 - 07:02 AM I've said this before MikeL2 and I'll say it again. Pogba has to go. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: G-Force Date: 02 Jan 21 - 07:09 AM I, for my sins, support Sheffield United. I think it's a real shame that a club who should never have been relegated (yah booh West Ham!), and who took so long to haul themselves back up from the lower divisions, and who looked so promising last season, are right back down the bottom again. I guess the other teams have just worked out how to play them. And they desperately need a decent goalscorer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Jan 21 - 07:14 AM He's another Ballotelli, innit. Fergie would have offloaded him aeons ago. Liverpool's recent success is built around a whole-team ethos. No-one is irreplaceable but everyone is invaluable. Man U have got to get away from pinning their hopes on one or two (Bruno, for example). Spurs are currently making the same mistake with Son and Kane. The decline of Barca is solely because the ethic is whatever you do, get it to Messi... |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 08 Jan 21 - 08:00 PM Don't want to go too hyper about this, but the FA Cup third round game at Villa tonight was a bloody wonderful moment for sport. Villa had to put out a total youth team after their first team, and most of the management, were floored by coronavirus issues. Klopp was respectful in putting out a really strong lineup. Milner, Gino, Hendo, Mo, Fab, Bobby, Thiago, Shaq, Minamino and Sadio were all on show. The young Villa lads (a few of them were so young that their dads had to drop them off at the ground, as many hadn't passed their driving tests yet) put in a helluva great first-half performance. Louie Barry, aged 17, humbled Liverpool with a superb equaliser just before half-time. How good was it to see the ref walking back to the circle after that goal, grinning at Louie like a bloody Cheshire Cat! The Liverpool greats really had to get their act together after the break to beat, but not humble, the Villa lads, and they did it (eventually) in a really good, friendly spirit (though, as ever, taking no prisoners). So respectful. What a brilliant night for sport. Yet we could easily be facing another footie lockdown...Hard times of old England... :-( |

Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: MikeL2 Date: 13 Jan 21 - 09:25 AM Hi Raggy. Last night Man United pushed Liverpool off the top Of the League. They beat Burnley in a dour game . United wasted several chances until Pogba finished a superb goat from a Rashford cross. United dominated the game preventing Burnley any chance of even getting a of getting a shot in. I hope we can do the same to Liver pool at the weekend. Cheers Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 13 Jan 21 - 10:18 AM Hi MikeL, I doubt very much that United can maintain the form that has seen them climb to the top of the table. However it does my heart good to see them there. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: MikeL2 Date: 14 Jan 21 - 06:06 AM Hi Raggy I agree we need acouple more top players. It is nice to take the ride. Minde you it's keeping the City and Liverpool members of our family quiet. !!!!!! Cheers Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 14 Jan 21 - 06:36 AM City are the biggest threat now in m'humble. They are back on song and Pep is paying a lot more attention to defence. The game on Sunday is crucial for Liverpool, and they are NOT on song! I still think that Man U are a long way from the finished article, as with Spurs. Heavy reliance on your two or three best players can work for a while, but if one of 'em goes off the boil or gets injured... You wouldn't rate Man U's chances if Bruno was out for a couple of months, would you? But Ole is doing a grand job and seems to be getting Pogba purring. It's gotta be either Man U or Liverpool this season: no bloody oil club, and no way, José! |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 16 Jan 21 - 09:55 AM I have a feeling that Liverpool will walk over United tomorrow, I think they have a point to prove. I hope I am wrong but I'm not convinced that United are anything like to finished article. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: MikeL2 Date: 18 Jan 21 - 10:31 AM Hi Raggy Liverpool did not walk all over Man United. Far From it !!! It was a game that never got going . Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 18 Jan 21 - 11:13 AM Once again Donuel you demonstrate your complete ignorance of the game of football. In the UK it is almost a religion to some people It may be better if you didn't post about a subject you clearly do not understand. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Donuel Date: 18 Jan 21 - 11:27 AM Raggytash please follow every post I make and mark with your musk. I am amused by the aroma of your incredible insight. What is religion to you is fan-aticism to me. Thank you for all your glowing PMs. Please post more. It will give you a sense of accomplishment much like an enema. It was not their best outing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 18 Jan 21 - 05:44 PM You have nothing sensible to say on this topic, Donuel, so you know the advice. Liverpool's front three are looking blunt. Unfortunately, because we've lost Matip, Virgil and Joe Gomez, we've had to push our key midfielders, Hendo and Fab, into more defensive roles. Trent and Robbo can no longer be as adventurous with their runs and crosses from the flanks. The front three are off-key anyway, but they are also being starved of the inspired supply from midfield and those flanks. We need Thiago to stay fit and bed in quickly. United's alleged key three front men, Marcus, Martial and Bruno, were all extremely unimpressive yesterday. A decent defence can handle the opposition's bus-parking and hopeful occasional counter-attacks, and there was a lot of bus-parking going on. Not a great game, was it? |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 19 Jan 21 - 07:45 AM Can I please make it clear I do not send PM's to Donuel, or at least I do not recall ever sending one. (I have been asked) |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 19 Jan 21 - 08:12 AM When he said "your glowing PMs" perhaps he meant our glowing prime ministers, y'know, Thatcher, Cameron, May, Johnson... After all, compared to the president he's got, they're all glowing! |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Senoufou Date: 19 Jan 21 - 08:27 AM According to husband, Norwich City has now 50 points and is top of their League. If this continues they might 'go up' again to Premier League. But then they might 'go down' again, which they did last time. He says they should buy some better players to maintain their place in League One. |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Raggytash Date: 19 Jan 21 - 08:49 AM Careful Senofou, you're in danger of upsetting your beloved. Norwich are in the championship with a realistic prospect of being promoted to the premiership. If they were in League one they would have been relegated!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Senoufou Date: 19 Jan 21 - 11:28 AM Ah Raggytash, I meant if/when they go up, they should maintain their position once there by buying some star players. I know they ain't there yet! Husband has bought online some very fancy face masks in Canary colours. And he swathes himself in his Norwich City scarf for our trip to the supermarket. Looks a bit odd with his flowing African robes, but rather nice just the same! "Come on you Yellows!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Jon Freeman Date: 20 Jan 21 - 03:26 AM I don’t think that Norwich had the money last time and didn’t want to gamble on big spends. I’m not sure it would be any different if we go up again. Probably the biggest name Norwich had and within my memory (in fact I was much keener then) was Martin Peters. Presumably past his West Ham and Spurs best but a great asset to Norwich. You will probably still hear people say “what we need is another Martin Peters” – not too expensive but with a wealth of experience and skill but they may also debate as to whether you can find such a player now? |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Steve Shaw Date: 20 Jan 21 - 06:29 AM I think it's great that the Canaries are doing so well that they'll be coming back up (barring disasters). I spent half my life as an urbanite, cosseted by the abundance of big club football teams all around. When I lived up north I was in easy reach of Man U, Man City, Bolton Wanderers (then a force to be reckoned with), Bury, Rochdale, Oldham Athletic, Preston North End, Burnley, Blackburn Rovers and others I may have forgotten, and the Merseyside clubs weren't much further away either. A positive cornucopia. Here in the Westcountry, west of Bristol (which takes over two hours for us to get to, and they don't even have Premier League teams in any case), it's lamentable that all we have are Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle, both permanently languishing in lower divisions and both over an hour away from me. A good top-divisions football club can be the heart and soul of a community (and to hell with the naysayers!) and you should treasure the Canaries! |
Subject: RE: BS: Football (not the U.S. kind) From: Senoufou Date: 20 Jan 21 - 06:51 AM You're so right Steve. Nearly everyone here in Norfolk identifies with the team and many wear the colours (yellow and green) when out shopping. It's a cultural focus. Our song "On the ball City!" is apparently the oldest in history. (I love hearing the last line sung in Broad Norfolk : "Hurrah! We've scored a goool!" A house on the corner of our small village-in-the-sticks has a flagpole in the garden, and when Norwich City are playing they hoist the Canaries flag. Husband often embarrasses me in the supermarket when he spots someone wearing a City scarf or cap. He yells " Come on you Yellows!" but they always laugh and give him the thumbs up. Oh I do hope we go back up, even if only temporarily! |
