Subject: RE: BBC Radio This week 2022 From: FreddyHeadey Date: 25 Aug 22 - 11:31 AM The Forum Bluegrass: Virtuoso music of Appalachia It is rare in music history that scholars can point to the beginning of a particular style, but bluegrass would appear to be the exception to the rule. Mandolin player Bill Monroe from rural Kentucky had so much clout in the music business that some scholars have suggested that it was he who defined the sound which came to be known as bluegrass. He was certainly protective; Monroe is quoted as saying “the biggest job of bluegrass is to keep out what don’t belong in it.” Played initially in America's rural south, bluegrass was later adopted by the counter-cultural college kid scene in the 1950s and '60s. And today the music is flourishing all over the world in the most unlikely places. Rajan Datar is joined by Dan Boner, director of the Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies programme at East Tennessee State University, who demonstrates how bluegrass works; writer and historian Tony Russell, whose publications on music include Rural Rhythm: The Story of Old-Time Country Music in 78 Records; and Dr Lydia Hamessley, professor of music at Hamilton College whose research concentrates on old-time and bluegrass music. Subject: RE: BBC Radio This week 2022 From: Rain Dog Date: 29 Aug 22 - 11:42 AM On BBC Radio 4 - Tuesday 30th August at 11.30 and then available to listen to again. A Little Flat: The Music Our Ears Overlook Musician, DJ and producer Nabihah Iqbal celebrates the variety of music systems across the globe. Drawing on musical traditions from around the world, she takes a closer look at the notes and scales used to make music. She examines how and why our ears hear some music as ‘in tune’ and other music as ‘out of tune.’ With the help of a range of musicians and music experts, Nabihah asks if we are missing out on certain musical experiences and looks at what the future holds for music across the world. Professor Roger T Dean at the MARCS Institute, explains that the notes we use to make music are much more flexible than the keys seen on the piano might suggest and how our ears are conditioned to like certain sounds. Nabihah hears from music scholar Dr Joe Peters and examines the issue of a shrinking music biodiversity. Nabihah explores what this means for music on a local and global scale with the help of vocalist and educator Anuja and musician and electric sitarist BISHI who demonstrates the freedom possible from playing music across different traditions. Multi-instrumentalist and researcher, Dr Khyam Allami, discusses how technology impacts what type of music we make and are exposed to and suggests solutions for a rich musical future. Samira Ahmed explores his musical language and revels in live performance with her guests, the solo violinist Jennifer Pike , baritone Roderick Williams, Paul Sartin of the folk band Bellowhead, Kate Kennedy from Oxford University, and composer, writer and pianist Neil Brand. |

U2, Cat Stevens, Roxy Music, Fairport Convention and Free were all signed to Island, but it was the label's unique connection to Jamaica that helped popularise ska and reggae music throughout the world, as well as Jamaican born artists like Grace Jones, and British bands with links to the Caribbean such as Steel Pulse and Aswad. Bob Marley, Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, and Sly and Robbie, all took refuge on Island - a record label that catered proudly for those who wanted to explore their creativity in an independent way. Joining Kirsty Wark are Island Records founder, Chris Blackwell; Grammy winning Jimmy Cliff, the singer who became a star after the landmark film The Harder They Come; Mykaell Riley who was a founder member of British reggae act Steel Pulse; pioneer Jamaican ska musician Owen Gray; and Marcia Griffiths, a member of the I Threes who supported Bob Marley and the Wailers for many years, and whose hit Young, Gifted and Black, with Bob Andy, became an anthem for young Jamaicans. Subject: RE: BBC Radio This week 2022 From: FreddyHeadey Date: 06 Sep 22 - 07:47 PM ^ thanks Anne Singing Together Archive on 4 Singing Together was the long-running BBC Schools radio programme which got generations of children singing. Jarvis Cocker sets out on a musical journey to trace its history. He uncovers the stories of those who made the programme, listened as children, and used it in their classrooms. Together they remember Monday mornings at 11am, when pupils up and down the country opened their song books and gathered round as teachers wheeled out their classroom radios. He delves into the archive to uncover the origins of the programme, hearing the first presenter, Herbert Wiseman, describe how he started the series at the outbreak of the Second World War as a way of reaching out to children at a time when many had been evacuated. Wartime teacher Brenda Jenkins, who used Singing Together with her class of evacuees, remembers how 'singing always helped' Jarvis explores the power of singing to bringing people together. He also uncovers the origins of the folk songs used in the programme and traces how it changed though the 1960s and 70's, opening up to musical traditions from around the world. He reflects on the impact of the long running series – which gave many their first introduction to folk heritage- with award winning musician Eliza Carthy. And he asks why recordings of this hugely popular series were not preserved for posterity. Only a handful of episodes survive in the BBC archive but, with the help of a small community of collectors, he sets out to find some of the missing episodes. Subject: RE: BBC Radio This week 2022 From: GUEST,henryp Date: 12 Sep 22 - 11:06 PM BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week The Captain’s Apprentice from 9.45am Monday 26 September Following in the footsteps of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Caroline Davison explores the influence of folk song and the Fens on the composer, in the 150th anniversary of his birth. Ralph Vaughan Williams was a keen collector of folk songs, and committed to saving these indigenous tunes before they could be forgotten. In 1905 he was in King's Lynn where James 'Duggie' Carter sang 'The Captain's Apprentice'. The tune was beautiful and the melody, harmony and feeling went on to shape Vaughan Williams' future composition. Yet, in stark contrast, the lyrics of this song told a tale of brutal torture at sea. Alongside the story of Ralph Vaughan Williams' passion for folk song and the Fens, Caroline Davison delves into the plight of cabin boys on the high seas who were at the mercy of unscrupulous sea captains. Folk songs are not the only the theme examined in this account, we also discover how the landscape of the Fens inspired Vaughan Williams work, and there are glimpses into the composer's personal life, and the times in which he lived. Song lyrics are usually understood to be fiction - Tom Jones's 'Delilah' isn't an admission that the Welsh singer actually stabbed an unfaithful girlfriend, and Bob Marley never "shot the sheriff". But in California rap lyrics have been presented as evidence in criminal prosecutions in such a way that the state has now legislated to restrict the use of those lyrics in trials. Subject: RE: BBC Radio This week 2022 From: GUEST,henryp Date: 09 Nov 22 - 06:12 AM 7 February 2022 21st Century Folk: Radio 2 is always looking for ways to tell stories, and 21st Century Folk is a creatively ambitious and hugely exciting new endeavour. Following in the tradition of the Radio Ballads, I’m proud that in the BBC’s centenary year we will be telling the real life stories of our listeners in the North East of England, using original music to create a lasting legacy of their experiences. Helen Thomas, Head of Radio 2 BBC Radio 2, in partnership with BBC Local Radio, launches 21st Century Folk, an ambitious initiative to capture the essence of life in the North East of England in 2022 - the BBC’s centenary year – through the prism of folk songs, and offering people from the region the opportunity to have a song written about their life. Mark Radcliffe unveiled the project to listeners on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on Radio 2 and on BBC Radio Newcastle and BBC Radio Tees, asking people from the North East to share stories about their daily lives. Five of these stories will be given to songwriters, who will write original songs based on the listeners’ experiences. The songs will then be performed by a range of artists, including musicians with links to the region. BBC Radio 2 Folk Show with/without* Mark Radcliffe Broadcast 02 Nov 2022* Available on BBC Sounds for 23 days Teesside songwriter Sean Cooney, of The Young'uns, shares his favourite songs about real people. Sean is one of the songwriters involved in Radio 2's 21st Century Folk, which is creating a musical time capsule of life in the North East of England. Five singers are meeting five Radio 2 listeners and writing songs about their lives. Inspired by 21st Century Folk, Sean devotes this week's Folk Show to songs about real people and true stories. 21:00 09 November 2022* Then on demand for 30 days on BBC Sounds Chris Difford of Squeeze shares songs by his favourite folk and acoustic songwriters. In January 2023, Chris will take part in Radio 2's 21st Century Folk, writing a brand new song about a real Radio 2 listener from the North East of England. The project will create a musical time capsule of northern life in 2023, in which five real people will have their life experiences immortalised in song. 21:00 16 November 2022 Strange gap in BBC Radio 2 schedule! 21:00 23 November 2022 Then on demand for 30 days on BBC Sounds This week, Jackie Oates and her trio perform songs from her new album, 'Gracious Wings'. |
