Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: VirginiaTam Date: 29 Apr 09 - 04:19 AM OK. So I received an email from Ideasthatsell (Fisheye's youtube notification service) about some new vids posted. And I went in and clicked on the latest Ride On. Whatyaknow, Old RB is nagging me to play along on mandolin. So inspired, this morning I learned to play along with Ride On on the mando. Now 2 songs down. I'm chuffed. Thanks Richard (both of them). |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 29 Apr 09 - 04:32 AM I can only play Mandolin at present in D.G..A. and I accompany myself on a D Harmonica. I have also learned scales In D.G.A. There Pintagin&tonic scales so I can do a bit of lead accompaniment. its repetitive but sounds o k if kept short. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: VirginiaTam Date: 29 Apr 09 - 05:32 AM Pete I am playing two finger chords only. G, G7, C, C7, D and D7, to play Trouble In Mind Watch the whole video there is a very slow easy to follow lesson from middle to end. Still having trouble laying the singing over top of playing, but working on it. for Ride On the Am chord is a bit of uncomfortable stretch but I am determined to make it comfortable. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 29 Apr 09 - 05:35 AM I have had nothing but trouble with Mandolin picks. i have tried, Plastic picks. & Felt picks. Wooden picks & Cork picks. Paper picks & Cardboard picks Riizla packet picks and match sticks a ball point pen and paperclips,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,But the greatest pick of them all.............. is made from a plastic.................................. Milk bottle. Sounds like a Melodeon boy song? its true try it cut out a pick shape from a simple plastic milk bottle. Thanks to my American friends across the pond for that excellent little tip. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 29 Apr 09 - 05:49 AM Thanks Vt that above is very good. I will fashion you a plastic milk bottle pick at the GI on Friday. Excellent. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 29 Apr 09 - 07:30 AM Im not quite sure what our mentor RB "Would make of plastic Milk Bottle picks for Mandolins? all I done was draw round a pick and make a template and cut it out. |

Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: The Barden of England Date: 29 Apr 09 - 02:24 PM Just when you don't need it, your laptop decide to fry a motherboard!!!! It was cheaper to buy a new one than find a motherboard and all the rest of it, so here I am again. So - - Caravan checked. No water ingress, so all OK there. Solar panel kept the battery charged - all OK there. Somethings bound to curl up its toes and die, but at least I'll have some cover for the forthcoming Sweeps, so I'll be there from Friday about 3pm. Looking forward to this one. John Barden |

Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: Richard Bridge Date: 29 Apr 09 - 08:39 PM JB, my mate Morgan has just bought a sub-laptop for £149 with OS and office progs - needs little computing power so the battery lasts for ever - but runs like a dose of salts. Why? It runs linux and open office. He is dead impressed and is converting everything so it can be his mobile office. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: VirginiaTam Date: 30 Apr 09 - 02:38 AM My son (network engineer) has told me for years to use Linux because Windows and MS apps are clunky, unstable, vulnerable and disgustingly designed to become obsolete. We have Linux and Open Office on our little eeePC. I love it. When this Dell (hell) laptop finally gives up the ghost, I am going for a Mac. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 30 Apr 09 - 06:18 AM I have always had Apple Macs. would not dream of touching windows with a Barge pole. If you like making nusic. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: The Barden of England Date: 30 Apr 09 - 06:41 AM Richard - I was looking to go that route but decided against it this time. Those little notebooks with Linux and Open office are good - my external hard drive should work as a place to store data, but I need to check compatability first. As I say - next time, as by then I'll be retired :-). Just one more day to sweeps - whoopee!! John Barden |

Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: Pierre Le Chapeau Date: 01 May 09 - 06:55 AM Rochester sweeps folk Pierre Le Chapeau is in need of help Its a bloody Par-larva In the early hours of this morning. I dropped my mobile phone into a pint of beer and now it wont work despite all the tricks I know to dry it out. Brian Rogers is meeting me at the GI tonight in order to give me my guitar he has just set up for me. Trouble is Brian wanted me to phone him when I got to the Gi this evening but his number is on the phone that went in the beer. so I have no way of contacting him which means I fear I wont get my guitar back until Saturday BOO HOO If anyone knows Brians number could they txt it to me. i have dug out a mobile which is for emergencies like this one .The number is 07743500456. I am not worried about giving this number out because I very rarely use it. I intend to buy yet another new phone over the Sweeps weekend. Thanks folks, I intend to be in the GI BY 1800 HRS THIS EVENING. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: VirginiaTam Date: 01 May 09 - 07:14 AM I seem to have misplaced the business card Richard gave me. Shouldn't his number should be stored on the chip from the beer baptised phone, in which case can't you swap it to the working phone? Can you take the chip into shop (whatever mobile service you use) and ask them to get the numbers stored on it. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: The Barden of England Date: 01 May 09 - 07:35 AM Pierre le Chapeau :- I have sent you a PM with Brian's number, although he phoned me yesterday and said he will be there tonight. Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: VirginiaTam Date: 03 May 09 - 05:27 AM Fisheye and Fair Maiden. So sorry< I didn't get to speak to you both more yesterday. I just figured out what you were on about re what I like for breakfast. I wasn't thinking about the invitation to stay with you at Knockholt. I have had so many requests to say the word banana from UK friends and colleagues so people could get a giggle at my expense, (and yes as what I have for breakfast is a sneaky way to get me to say the "b" word) that's why I thought you were asking. If that makes sense to you then I am impressed, because I have confused myself. Anyway Chris likes everything long as it has no meat in it (vegetarian). I am ok with pretty much anything, except weird stuff like liver. Thank you for asking. Do you guys like wine? If so red or white? Tam |

Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: VirginiaTam Date: 04 May 09 - 01:59 PM We are all knackered Woodsie. Great piccies, specially Essex Girl's festival toes. - Essex Girl sang something I had not heard from her on Saturday. Hope to hear it again from her soon. The Sunday Night was the best session in my limited experience. Met another mudcatter - Hi Sue the Borderer. Loved that last song you did Sunday, about beer as an excellent means of contraception. My partner and I loved the pagan one from the night before, (about the green man?) Now my memory fails because I cannot remember who did the witch buring song. Was that Sue too? RB's daughter .... whatever I say will fall woefully short of what she added to the sessions. Suffice to say the sweet crystal clear voice rendering the song of experience and death creates a heart stopping contrast. She is no slack at wailing in the lower register either. RB did something Saturday night (I think), that I had not heard before that was amazing. I cannot remember it now and I am so ashamed. John Barden and Jock on form making tingles all over the place. Steve May stunning. Pete I will watch you next time you play Streets of London. Want to learn that. Cheers to the Rough & Ready, especially to &. She and I will work on Summertime/Motherless Child as soon as possible. Fallen in love with No Worries and now the Sally Ironmonger Band and Mr Bob Kenward. Paul Steele joined us on Sunday as did Dean? and Shona? I know I am leaving people out (so sorry). Brain fart. Weird thing is out of all the music from this weekend, what were we singing as we stumbled though our front door? The cat came back, the very next day. The cat came back the thought he was a goner, Thank you Royston. This post is all over the place and I am quite amazed that I can type this well. Plan to sleep all day tomorrow (I wish) to recover and maybe my memory will pick up. |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: Girl Friday Date: 04 May 09 - 02:03 PM If TDL get sat in the G I too soon in the weekend - we are there for the weekend, so we did our own thing until Sunday night, when both the garden and the inside were heaving. We had to leave early as we had a late night session in the Gordon with Norcsalordie. I enjoyed a pint of whatever Dal gave me, having specified, not too strong and fairly blond. We got one song in, and played to a few "pieces of fresh meat." Great to see Richard, Royston, and Rachel belting out "Byker Hill". Roger The Chorister lives again !The leopardskin chaise longue is sitting in my lounge. Will have to practice my Eartha Kitt ! |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: growler Date: 04 May 09 - 02:26 PM Thanks to everyone that attended the GI. Monday is usually the graveyard session, with people heading home, but this year it just kept filling up. We left at 4.30, as our session was due to end at 2.30 abd it was still in full swing. Thanks again |
Subject: RE: Good Intent Rochester UK Sweeps From: VirginiaTam Date: 04 May 09 - 02:46 PM Oik! I forgot TDL. Oh the shame. |
