Praise was asking about klezmer music, wanting some audio samples. I heard Itzhak Perlman on NPR a few years ago. He spoke of discovering his cultural music and what a pleasure it has been for him to learn and perform it.

This link will take you to a wonderful site which has full clips of entire albums available to listen to, not only by him, but also several other artists. But...who can beat Perlman on the fiddle/violin, ah, such clarity and beauty!

Enjoy!

kat

speaking of Itzhak Perlman, have you heard his album " A different kind of Blue"? He went to Andre Previn and asked him to write some blues music for his "fiddle" (the Strad.) It's pretty good.

rr, no, I hadn't heard of it. I will have to check it out. The man is such a Master! And, I love to watch him while he plays; his face and whole body are so full of expression.

Bill, yer welcome, dearie. I am listening to each clip as we *speak*. It is really first-rate.

Kat--

A sheynem dank! That is to say, thankyou thankyou thankyou! What a fantastic site! I can't wait to explore it.
When I moved to Portland from Philadelphia in 1982 I had just begun to listen to, sing, and play, folk music. I went to song circles and had a great time. Then one night I went to a performance of the Hester Street Klezmer Band, led by Jack Falk, and I felt like I had come home. All the other folk music was still wonderful, but this music is where I came from. Thanks again!

Aloha,
Mark

Ah, Mark, it's worth it just to hear you and Praise react! I have always loved klezmer. First heard it when we lived in Massachusetts. Such soul, joy, angst, reverie!

Can you believe it, this was the first site that came up when I went searching! A sheynum dank to you, too!

The PBS special "In The Fiddler's House" introduced me to Klezmer. I loved Itzhak's reaction when someone gave him an electronic fiddle (all neck, no body) to play. He played it with gusto. The Album is fantastic, I also recommend "Rhythm and Jews" and "Brave Old World" as 2 other Klezmerin to give a listen to.

Thanks for that excellent site. Like 'daks' I would also like to know if there are any other klezmer sites that have chords and lyrics and above all MIDI Files. (in particular of Giora Feidman and Itzhak Perlman)
thanks

Glad you all enjoyed that site. I had a chance to go looking for more. Need to do some more digging, but I did find these two:

Have Nashira Jewish Songleaders Resource which has a lot of links, including one for Jewish songbooks.

Also, Balkan Traditional Music, which has tons of links, including this one, German Klezmer, which also lists a link for the "Klezmer Ring" of websites.

I didn't get a chance to look at all these have to offer, but it seems there is enough there you might be able to find what you are looking for.

The Balkan Trad site links included Turkish, Romanian, Middle Eastern, Greek, Macedonian, Yugoslavian, Armenian, and something called New Native links for folk songs.

Have fun!

Before the last time I reformatted my hard drive, I was amassing quite a collection of kletzmer mp3s. I remember finding several at mp3.com . The Frumious BANDersnatch tried to do a couple of kletzmer tunes, but because there were only four of us, we tended towards simpler tunes (the ones everyone's Babushka knew); we could do a mean Djankoye or Tumbalalaika.

Chocolate Pi (wondering if there's any music about ribosomal mRNA)

Yay, Klezmer !
Thanks for reviving this thread, Susan.

Lots of Klezmer, Yiddish and Jewish music links here at the Jewish Music Institute website (based at SOAS, London University, UK), including details of this year's KLEZFEST 8th to 12th August in London.

The week before the Klezfest, there is a course from 1st to 6th August in Yiddish Language and Singing in Yiddish. I'm going to try and get to that this year.

No sound samples, or at least not when I last looked, but dots at:

http://www.manchesterklezmer.org/pages/repertoire.html

and a big welcome to anyone who turns up at the White Hart, Dye House Lane, New Mills, between Manchester and Buxton (UK). Normally first Sunday of the month, kick off about 14.00 BUT:

!!!! March session is on the 14th !!!!

Rhythm, brass, bass especially welcome, you can have too many Naftule Brandweins.

Wish I could be there. Last year I got to sit in on guitar with a trio of women who play klezmer, and it was pure joy--especially 'cause I got to sing Der Rebbe Elimelech. But they've stopped playing regularly, so I'm back to Irish. Feh!

Aloha,
Mark
