Subject: Obit: Dominic Patten 2024 From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 02 Dec 24 - 06:11 PM I have just heard that Dominic passed away last Thursday morning, peacefully in hospital with pneumonia after a fall, with wife Sarah and son Sam by his side. He had had health problems for some time. Dominic had a long musical history with various bands in the South East, such as the Truss and Bucket Band, before I met first him in the 1980s in Somerset. He had also lived in the same house as Nick Jones and was reunited with him in the last couple of years. Dominic was a leading light behind folk music in Bridgwater and a strong singer and excellent guitarist as well as bass guitarist. I was with him the duo Achilles Heel and as part of piece (usually) Blind Panic, which we loosely termed as "post-modern folk-rock fusion" and hoped that no-one would ask us to explain. The two of us were also part of Hen's Teeth. He was also up for writing the ocassional piece, as he did when we were asked to provide music for a couple of plays and also a version of a mystery play. His working life was quite varied, involving such varied activities garden centres, bus driving and lecturing after obtaining his degree. It is expected that there will be some form of memorial for him in the next year; he never really liked winter. Robin |

Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: Nick Dow Date: 05 Dec 24 - 02:11 PM He was an old friend. I lost touch with him. We played together a couple of times in London and he gave me one of my first gigs in Somerset, and rebooked me the next year. I still have a cassette tape of him singing and playing at the Catford Folk club when I ran it. Sad news. God rest him. |
Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: Howard Jones Date: 07 Dec 24 - 11:42 AM I'm sorry to hear this. Dominic was well known around the folk clubs in Essex when I was starting out. I also attended a guitar evening class run by him. I remember him as a nice guy, helpful with advice, and a good musician. RIP |
Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: GUEST Date: 07 Dec 24 - 06:05 PM So sorry to hear this news. When myself and a few chums embarked on an attempt to run a little club in Essex he was most generous with help and advice. He was also very flexible fee wise when we booked him, either solo or as part of the Riggers. He had a great guitar style as well as a very nice singing voice. Such a nice man. |

Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: GUEST Date: 09 Dec 24 - 12:05 PM Hello Nick sorry if this is too presumptive but was you Margaretting comment aimed at my post about our little club in Essex. No I was referring to a little club in Ockendon. I am John McGettigan and in later years I helped out at Hermit Brentwood where you played a few times. Been seeing you on you tube, still in good voice. Dominic was a great help to us in the early days. A most agreeable man. |
Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: The Sandman Date: 09 Dec 24 - 12:18 PM well I lived in Ockendon, 1969 to early seventies, and never knew about your club unless it was the jack o lantern? I helped to run a club at Havering, and sang at a club in Brentwood, near the railway station, my father was a labour county councillor for Ockendon.Dick Miles |
Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: GUEST Date: 09 Dec 24 - 02:08 PM No, the Jack was a little before my time. Our club was at the Plough in the village. I was not aware of a club near to the station although I lived in Brentwood from 79 to 87. I believe there was a club at the castle in Ongar Road. The resident there was a young man called Paul Simon. I wonder what became of him. |
Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: GUEST Date: 09 Dec 24 - 02:58 PM Actually, I think I might have known you. Were you, for a time, resident at Havering Atte Bower. I think that was Dominic`s club |
Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: The Sandman Date: 09 Dec 24 - 04:18 PM Yes, I was resident and did bookings, along with John Durrant Dominic was resident as part of the Riggers at Upminster. The Plough In Ockendon was at the bottom of Mollands Lane. The club at the castle RESIDENT was Geoff and Penni Harris, Chelmsford was Nic Jones. Dominic was a talented guitarist and singer, and a really nice guy |

Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: GUEST,Henderson Sisters Date: 13 Dec 24 - 08:39 AM My sister and I and a friend formed a folk band in the 6o,s we advertised for a guitarist and we were so lucky to find Dominic, he lived in Gidea Park Romford at the time.A realy lovely guy who was so talented a great guitarist and a true traditional folk singer. For various reasons we all went our separate ways, we often spoke about him over the years And today I thought about him and decided to look him up and was so sad to see that he had passed away. Rest in Peace dear Dominic we shall always remember you ???? |
Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: GUEST Date: 14 Dec 24 - 02:56 PM What was the name of your band, did you ever venture out to South Ockendon? |
Subject: RE: 2024 Obit: Dominic Patten From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 21 Dec 24 - 06:29 AM We have agreement that the old Blind Panic cassette albums can be put up on Bandcamp, we have to decide what happens to any income from this, I suggest that it goes to a hospice Dominic was a supporter of.
