Subject: Lyr Req: If you do my ghost will haunt you From: GUEST,Guest Joan F Date: 25 May 24 - 09:14 PM The actual line set is: Da-da da-da da-da da-da If you do my ghost will haunt you This is a trad song, involves a ship Its difficult to convince google not to give me modern songs; seems to be a popular theme! |
Subject: RE: If you do my ghost will haunt you From: Reinhard Date: 25 May 24 - 09:47 PM Whiskey You’re the Devil (Roud 21715) as sung by some, e.g. The Clancy Brothers, has the verse Said the mother, “Do not wrong me, Don’t take me daughter from me. For if you do I will torment you And after death me ghost will haunt you.” |
Subject: RE: Lyr req: If you do my ghost will haunt you From: GUEST,Guest Joan F Date: 26 May 24 - 08:44 AM A good song but not the one I'm looking for. Apparently this couplet has travelled. Mine does have the "do not take my daughter from me" part. |
Subject: RE: Lyr req: If you do my ghost will haunt you From: cnd Date: 26 May 24 - 10:07 AM Could it be Johnny and Molly? There's also another song called Love, Brave Boys (in The British Soldier: An Anecdotal History by Joachim Hayward Stocqueler, pp. 268-269) |
Subject: RE: Lyr req: If you do my ghost will haunt you From: Nick Dow Date: 26 May 24 - 12:08 PM The song is Love Farewell sung by Marina Russell in 1908 to the Hammond brothers. The tune is of Irish origin and the verses are filled out in our book Southern Songster with full notes by Steve Gardham. (Francis Boutle Publishers) |
Subject: RE: Lyr req: If you do my ghost will haunt you From: Reinhard Date: 26 May 24 - 12:11 PM Love Farewell aka Love Brave Boys aka Johnny and Molly (Roud 1301) share quite a few verses with Whiskey You’re the Devil - both songs mostly seem to differ in the chorus. So probably this one won't be the one Joan is looking for either. |
Subject: RE: Lyr req: If you do my ghost will haunt you From: Lighter Date: 26 May 24 - 01:26 PM Thanks for "Love, Brave Boys," Carter. Stocqueler implies that it was well known in the 1850s. |
