A new 'catter has been asking for this in an ambiguously titled thread here.

I don't have the answer, but am hoping that someone else might

'twas in the year of 88 in the lovely month of June
when the gadflies were swarming & dogs howling at the moon
With rosary beads and sandwiches for Stuttgart we began
Joxer packed his German phrase book and the jump leads for the van.

Oh well some of the lads had never been away from home before
'was the first time Wacker put his foot outside of Inchicore
Before we left for europe we knew we'd need a plan
So we all agreed Joxer was the man to drive the van

In Germany the autobahn was like the Long Mile Road
There was every make of car and van all carrying the full load.
For transits and hiaces and an auld Bedford from Tralee
with the engine overheating from long-hauling duty-free.
Well there was fans from Ballyfermot, Ballybough and Ballymun
on the journey of a lifetine and the crack was 91
well Joxer met a German's daughter on the banks of the river Rhine
and told her she'd be welcome in Ballyfermot anytime

As soon as we found Stuttgart we got the wagons in a ring
Sean Og got out the banjo & Peter played the mandolin.
There was fans there from everywhere attracted by the sound
At the first Fleadh Ceoil in Europe Joxer passed the flagon round.

But the session it ended when we'd finished all the stout.
The air matresses inflated and the sleeping bags rolled
as one by one we fell asleep poor Joxer had a dream
He dreamt himself and Jack Charlton sat down to pick the team.

Joxer dreamt they both agreed on Packie Bonner right away
& Moran, Whelan & McGrath weer certainly to play
BUt tempers they began to rise and patience wearing thin
Jack wanted Cascarino but Joxer wanted Quinn

The dream tured into a nightmare Joxer stuck the head on Jack
who wanted to bring Johnny Giles and Eamon Dunphy back
When the cock crowed in the morining it crewed both loud and shrill
Joxer woke up in his sleeping bag many miles from Arbour Hill

The next morning none of the experts gave us the slightest chance
They said the English team would lead us on a merry dance
with their union jacks all them Englishmen for victory they were set
until Ray Houghton got the ball and he stuck it in the net

What happened next was history bought tears to many eyes
That day will be the highlight of many peoples lives
Well Joxer climbed right over the top and the last time he was seen
he was arm in arm with Jack Charlton singing "revenge for Skibbereen"

Now Wacker's back in Inchicore he's living with his Mam
& jack Charlto has been proclaimed an honourary Irishman
Hey listen, d'you rmemeber that German's daughter on the banks of the river Rhine?
well, didn't she show up in BAllyfermot last week and.....

Aren't duplicate threads confusing? I've just replied to the other one.

Here goes. Sorry about the quality of the gif but it is the best I'm going to come up with at the moment. It is at http://members.tripod.co.uk/jonbanjo/Joxer.gif. I have also put the MIDI at http://members.tripod.co.uk/jonbanjo/Joxer.mid.

Thanks for posting this guys its one of the few folk songs I know about football. I remember the game very well. We were watching it in the pub. When Ray Houghton got the ball you could have heard a pin drop. The expressions on the faces were priceless. Everything came to a complete standstill time was suspended and when he stuck the ball in the net the place erupted. You couldn't hear yourself think. Total strangers were hugging each other. The party went on into the wee hours, what a night, thanks for the memory again Den.

There's a brilliant song going the rounds in Dublin these days about three soccer fans on the tear in Amsterdam. It's to the tune of "The crack was ninety..". When I manage to get a set together, I'll post it here.

Regards

Good man, Jon! Nice job. What a fun song. I'm thinking that if not for this thread, I wouldn't have come round to listening to it for quite a while longer.

But please excuse the ignorance of a gringo to whom a "football" is generally oblong rather than spherical: who excactly is Jack Charlton that he'd be made an honorary Irishman?

I'm glad I got to hear it too. Jack Charton played football for England and was part of the victorious 1966 World Cup Squad. He later went on to become manager of Ireland - the song say's the rest...

Thanks very much for the music to Joxer...... I have been searching for it for ages. Where did you find it? Would you be so kind and see if you can find me the music to The Brendan Voyage, likewise from Christy Moore.I would be very grateful. Regards Brigid

Brigid--

We didn't actually "find" the music to "Joxer" anywhere. I sent Jon an actual recording of Christy singing the song, and he transcribed it onto a musical score himself. That wasn't some sheet music from somewhere in that .GIF linked above; it's Jon's own transcription. I had to hunt quite a bit to find the recording, but Jon did the real work. Takes me forever to do that sort of transcription, anyway.

Actually the melody is based on the theme music of the BBC's Match of the Day. Den

Brigid, don't know Brandan's voyage as a Chrsity Moore song - does it have "Is it right or left for Gibralta... " in the chorus. If it is that one, I have a recording by a band called Raglan Four and it should be easy to put into MIDI. Also, did you say in one of these threads you have Cakewalk? - would save me having to make the MIDI into a .gif (and I can provide a .wrk file as well - CakeWalk is what I use).

Jon--

Yes, that's the one. I've only heard Christy's version. Marvelous song. Lovely, playful tune. Wouldn't mind a MIDI of that myself. (I can pull it into Noteworthy, which I recommend for anyone who can't afford (or hasn't afforded) Cakewalk.)

I'm on a "Reel in the Flickering Light" kick lately myself, so far as Christy songs go....

Yes that's the one!! I have only heard Christy Moore doing it. And I do have Cakewalk, so zap it over on that. I got the programme as a present by the way, and actually find it quite complicated to use. Alot of the stuff I don't understand!!!!!! However, if the score comes up there, I can print it out too. Thanks a mill. Brigid

Oops, I'd forgotten about it - sorry. I don't have much time today but I will post a MIDI within the next couple of days.

Sorry,
