Subject: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: Freemanj Date: 30 Jan 10 - 02:29 PM Hi I am trying to find the title, lyrics and history for a folk song which my now ill sister sang for me in the early 70s. I have a fair quality recording which starts: Oh I wonder I never got married, uhhum married, aha married, such a beautiful creature am I...". I have not been able to find info on the song here or elsewhere on the Web. I could send the audio file if someone is interested. Thanks for any help available! Jim |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: Amos Date: 30 Jan 10 - 03:13 PM I think the title is "A skimmer a dipper a ladle...", IIRC. I learned it long ago from the singing of (I think) Richard Dyer Bennett. These lyrics are from memory. Oh I winder I never got married, Hmm married, ah married. Such a beautiful creature as I. Oh, I'm willing to marry somebody, Mmm, body, anybody, __ __ ___ ___ (line forgotten) With a skimmer, a dipper, a ladle, Oh, ladle, and a cradle, He sure shall have these when I die. Oh, I wonder I never got married Hmm married, ah, married Such a beautiful creature as I. There may be another verse, and I am drawing a complete blank on the closing line of verse 2. Sorry I can't be more help. A |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Jan 10 - 08:42 PM Hmmmm. I can't find this in the Richard Dyer-Bennet recordings at Smithsonian Folkways. Anybody know of a recording? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 30 Jan 10 - 08:48 PM I know it's on one of the Dyer-Bennet LPs I have; don't remember the title. Maybe I can find it and at least give the album name and maybe the Dyer-Bennet label name. More's the pity, I don't have a workable LP turntable. Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 30 Jan 10 - 09:09 PM I think I have it! If I'm right, the proper title of the song is The Old Maid, and it is to be found on Decca DLP 5046, a 10-inch 33 disk, called, appropriately enough, Richard Dyer-Bennett, Twentieth Century Minstrel. I can't play it to be sure it's the right song, but I'd bet money on it. Dave Oesterreich |

I think it has just one t. ############################################################# The last two posts took me about 10 tries to take, and then I tried breaking the post in two. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: GUEST,Jacques V. Hopkins Date: 18 Dec 24 - 04:47 AM I woke up this morning (12/18/2024) remembering that song. I hadn't thought of it for years. It's a lovely, although somewhat sad, song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: Steve Gardham Date: 18 Dec 24 - 10:12 AM I wonder when I shall be married (Master Title, Roud 818) is quite well-known and widely dispersed. Broadsides some dating back to 1678. Check it out on the Roud Index or even the Ballad List. It continued to be printed on broadsides over 3 centuries and a 78 of an Irish version 'Three Lovely lasses from Bannion' was recorded by Delia Murphy. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: GUEST,Steve Shaw Date: 18 Dec 24 - 10:56 AM Then there's Hedger and Ditcher" which also contains the theme of an ageing maiden worried about never being able to marry. Sung memorably by Mary-Ann Carolan and revived (not quite so memorably?) by the Silly Sisters. I think this is their version of the words: My father's a hedger and ditcher my mother does nothing but spin They say I'm a pretty young girl but the money comes slowly in -Oh dear, what shall become of me -Oh dear, what shall I do There's nobody coming to marry me Nobody coming to woo The doggie began to bark and I looked out to see I saw two young men out a'hunting but nobody's hunting for me -Oh dear, what shall become of me -Oh dear, what shall I do There's nobody coming to marry me Nobody coming to woo Oh, must I die an old maid Oh dear, how shocking the thought There's nobody coming to marry me Surely it's not me own fault My father's a hedger and ditcher my mother does nothing but spin They say I'm a pretty young girl but the money comes slowly in -Oh dear, what shall become of me -Oh dear, what shall I do There's nobody coming to marry me Nobody coming to woo |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: GUEST,PMB Date: 19 Dec 24 - 04:44 AM Seems to be related in metre and verse form (but not theme) to "Three Lovely Lasses From Bannion", as so memorably sung by Margaret Barry. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Oh I wonder I never got married... From: GUEST,Steve Shaw Date: 19 Dec 24 - 04:59 AM I was brought up with Delia Murphy's version of that. A brave and remarkable woman, by the way, worthy of a wiki lookup. |
