Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: RichM Date: 10 Feb 01 - 02:28 AM My group plays The Frost Is All Over, followed by Merrily Kiss... Rich |

Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: Manitas Date: 10 Feb 01 - 05:36 AM The tune I've heard it most coupled with is the Blarney Pilgrim which is also a 3-part slide. Dingle Regatta also goes well. |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: death by whisky Date: 10 Feb 01 - 05:58 AM Follow it with a slip jig for a nice "middle",then finsiH WITH A DIFFERENT jig one tone up. |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Feb 01 - 07:04 AM Yes, a shift up to A works well; I tend to follow it with Atholl Highlanders at the moment. |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: Jon Freeman Date: 10 Feb 01 - 08:03 AM I tend to play Dingle Regatta with it. Seeing as the Athol Highlanders has been mentioned, I like the Jig Of Slurs with that one. Jon |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: GUEST,Jenny the T Date: 10 Feb 01 - 08:21 AM We often play M.K.t.Q as part of a set of slides: Gan Ainm (we have no name for it) MKtQ Dennis Murphy's The Weavers The set works well, building in energy from tune to tune. Sometimes we take off on a set of jigs right afterwards, without so much as a pause. Jen |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: GUEST,Susan-MArie Date: 10 Feb 01 - 09:50 AM Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'm going to send them to our whistle player/unofficial leader and see what he thinks. We already play Blarney Pilgrim, pairing it with The Orphan - maybe we'll try all 3 together. Then again we need to learn some new stuff, so it might be better to try some of the tunes we don't know. Thanks again. |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: GUEST,chanteyranger Date: 10 Feb 01 - 12:26 PM That begs for the jig "I Buried My Wife And Danced On Her Grave" as a follow-up. :-) |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: GUEST,Phil Cooper Date: 11 Feb 01 - 10:22 AM I've played Merrily Kiss the Quaker's Wife with a tune called Cock of the North, except in reverse order. Works well and you can have fun combining the titles. It was also recorded that way by button accordion great, Pat Cloonan. |

Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: Les from Hull Date: 12 Feb 01 - 06:47 AM The one that follows it in sessions around here is the Jig of Slurs (usually referred to as the Jug of Slugs). Sweets of May usually teams up with Dingles Regatta. Blarney Pilgrim (or mostly called Barnsley Pilgrim to honour South Yorkshire) precedes the Battering Ram. |

Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: IanC Date: 12 Feb 01 - 10:39 AM If you're playing it as a slide (6/8) rather than a double jig (12/8), it's often combined with Haste to the Wedding and another tune (I've forgotten). The slide is usually 2-part, though, so I'm not sure whether you're really doing it that way.
Cheers! |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: Susan-Marie Date: 12 Feb 01 - 03:34 PM Ian - Thanks - but now I'm confused. I thought 6/8 was a jig, 9/8 a slip jig, and 12/8 a slide. Whatever the name, we play it in 12/8. Everyone - I've really enjoyed the suggestions, and it's interesting that many of them are tunes we already do. I guess there really is a "core" repertoire, and our amature pick-up band seems to be covering a lot of it. That's reassuring! |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: RichM Date: 12 Feb 01 - 03:42 PM As I said in an earlier posting in this thread, my group has recently combined The Frost is All Over with Merrily Kiss the Quaker's Wife...
We now refer to the combo as:

Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: IanC Date: 13 Feb 01 - 07:56 AM Susan-Marie Back where I come from a slide often seems to be an Irish term for an English single jig (6/8) such as Denis Murphy's slide (known in England as Geordie Mackintyre or The Mucking of Geordie's Byre) or the original English/Scottish version of The Quaker's Wife. There is an Irish set called "3 Jigs" which includes 6/8 versions of The Quaker's Wife, Haste to the Wedding and one other (I forget). 12/8 tunes are Double Jigs (still jigs but with more notes). They're less characteristic of English or Scottish music and much more Irish. Slip jigs (9/8) are really lovely. There are one or two Irish versions and some from parts of Scotland including Shetland. They are, however, most commonly found in Northumberland where almost every other tune seems to be in 9/8. I wish I could remember the 3rd jig tune, though it sounds as though I was on the wrong track for you anyway, so I'm sorry.
Cheers! |
Subject: RE: set w/ Merrily Kiss Quaker's Wife? From: Susan-Marie Date: 13 Feb 01 - 02:40 PM Thanks Ian - I like slip jigs too, probably because I play bodhran and the 9/8 rhythm is so much fun to do. |
