Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bottle of stout From: Fergie Date: 12 Jan 04 - 07:52 AM Martin Yes I spoke to him and was slightly embarress when he reminded me that he recorded it on his cd, I have it somewhere and if my memory serves me correctly I think that the words of all the songs are included in the blurb. I tought it was a good night, I took my youngest brother along, it was his first time at the Góilín, he enjoyed it no end, he was mightly impressed with all the excellent singers and songs. I reckon that he will come along again under his own steam. Unlike me, he is a bit of an extrovert, so I'd put money on it that he will have a song prepared and will murder it in his own inimitable fashion, he has a passable voice, but his renditions are always performed as though he is auditioning for a part in an amateur production of the Mikado. I'm glad that the motto is "no standard set" Regards Fergus |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bottle of stout From: Fergie Date: 12 Jan 04 - 08:05 PM I found my copy of Gerry O'Reilly cd "Down from your pulpit, down from your throne" and track 12 is "Lovers & Friends" by Sean Moan I have transcribed it but this pc won't allow me to paste the text onto this page, I will paste them from my own pc tomorrow Regards Fergus |

Subject: Lyr Add: LOVERS AND FRIENDS (Sean Mone) From: Fergie Date: 15 Jan 04 - 06:21 AM Lovers and Friends by Sean Mone Battles and wars leave deep wounds and scars. Deep wounds are long in the mending. While reflecting upon all that has gone, Life rushes on to its ending. Though sorrow and pain in our memories remain, And by memories lifetimes are measured, Still the times that we spend among lovers and friends Are times we'll remember with pleasure. So fill up your glass that future and past In harmony be determined, For there's more friendship poured out in one bottle of stout Than you'll find in statute or sermon. I've heard all the old songs, all the rights, all the wrongs, Heard prophets of doom and destruction, Street corner messiahs and moral pariahs, Dealers in bribes and corruption. From the holy and wise, denials and lies, When innocent youth was forsaken, Yet I've watched the night end among lovers and friends, And been sorry to see the dawn breaking. So fill up your glass that future and past In harmony be determined, For there's more friendship poured out in one bottle of stout Than you'll find in statute or sermon. And there are those who are certain that drinking and courtin' Are the sure way to hell and damnation, But if that is to be, it would seem clear to me That their god has no sense of occasion. To help his great plan, both woman and man Bring forth each new generation, And a wee drop of stout and the odd bit of a holt Can greatly assist procreation. So fill up your glass, throw your arm round your lass. In harmony be determined, For there's more friendship poured out in one bottle of stout Than you'll find in statute or sermon. To the brashest and proudest and those who shout loudest, It would seem that power has been given To berate us, deride us, separate and divide us In the hope of their version of heaven; But mountains and rivers will by far outlive us, And when our bones into dust they have withered, There'll be lovers and friends who will still comprehend The true reason we're all here together. So fill up your glass that future and past In harmony be determined, For there's more friendship poured out in one bottle of stout Than you'll find in statute or sermon. |

The pub's reaction to the line in this video has me assuming it's a bit risque, but all the internet will give me is some description of an otter's den. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lovers and Friends (Sean Mone) From: GUEST,Ridgeromer Date: 02 Nov 14 - 10:31 PM A "holt" or "holte" is also a grove of trees or a thicket, hense, all that is needed is a bottle of stout and a place to hide away with one's lover. Curiously, thickets of trees form and thrive because they provide favorable conditions for seeds to germinate. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lovers and Friends (Sean Mone) From: GUEST,Learaí na Láibe Date: 03 Nov 14 - 08:59 PM quote from Ridgeromer: "A "holt" or "holte" is also a grove of trees or a thicket, hense, all that is needed is a bottle of stout and a place to hide away with one's lover." I doubt if that was what Seán intended. "A bit of a hoult" is Irish slang for hugging and kissing or perhaps as Martin said for sex. When I was young lad long long ago we liked a bit of a hoult, but the Irish girls at that time would stop well short of actually engaging in full sex. 'Twas still highly enjoyable though. :) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lovers and Friends (Sean Mone) From: FreddyHeadey Date: 16 Apr 17 - 02:24 PM 'Lovers and Friends' sung at An Góilín Traditional Singers Club on Mick Dunne's SoundCloud channel (not dated) https://soundcloud.com/mick-dunne/lovers-and-friends-sung-by-an And a reminder of Tim's YouTube link above : Sean singing it in London 2014. https://youtu.be/SLrEUzDsXEc . |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lovers and Friends (Sean Mone) From: FreddyHeadey Date: 09 Nov 20 - 09:35 PM A couple of extra verses here, with some duplicated lines. From Brendan Nolan's page https://brendannolan.com/lyrics/loversfriends.html "I heard this song from Mary Meyer McAleese who, along with her husband Danny, used to have a pub in St. Pete Beach called Grace O'Malley's (that 'Pirate Queen again!). Mary said she heard it at the singer's session at the South Sligo Summer School held in Tubbercurry in the late 90's. It had the title "Bottle of Stout" but Mary wasn't sure who the author was. Having subsequently tracked down Sean Mone, the author, he informed me that the title is "Lovers and Friends"." To work for a living I'm able and willing But living for work's not my fancy For riches can't slow down the seasons that go 'round And their value it fades with life's passing For the joys of the day in our memory will stay To be recalled at our leisure And the times that we spend among lovers and friends Are the times we'll remember with pleasure So lift up your glass so that future and past In harmony be determined For there's more friendship poured out in a bottle of stout Than you'll find in statute or sermon For riches and gold I've been bought I've been sold But I've loved and been loved in proportion I've dreamed of an end to injustice and pain And I still haven't quite lost that notion Of the good and the wise I've heard slander and lies When honor and truth were forsaken And I've watched the night end among lovers and friends And I've been sad to see the dawn breaking |
