Subject: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Becks Date: 13 Feb 09 - 10:52 AM Has anyone else noticed on iTunes that (where you go to buy the music) the 'Folk Genre' has disappeared? You can no longer select it from the drop down list. Are they saying that Folk music doesn't deserve its own section or that folk music doesnt really exist anymore so lets just stick it in the Singer/Songwriter section? I am baffled why they would do this, where have they put all the trad stuff? |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: GUEST,Jed on a borrowed PC Date: 13 Feb 09 - 08:05 PM It seems my stuff is listed in WORLD, SINGER/SONGWRITER or COUNTRY No FOlk. |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: GUEST Date: 13 Feb 09 - 10:20 PM No doubt the marketing gurus and the bean counters have got their heads together and decided that the term 'folk' doesn't cut it commercially. I guess the musicians on the Apple/ iTunes Board of Directors were out-voted by the suits. Anyway, 'World' music sounds so much 'sexier'. Poor Old Folker

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: johnadams Date: 14 Feb 09 - 06:12 PM I've just been scouting round for a couple of tracks for my radio show and discovered that some Jimmy Shand albums are filed under 'Singer/Songwriter'. Que?? Any other silly categorisations? |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Morticia Date: 14 Feb 09 - 06:44 PM I can find folk on itunes. |
|
Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: johnadams Date: 15 Feb 09 - 05:44 AM The music is still there but it's not categorised as 'folk'. Martin Carthy turns up under 'Rock', Planxty under 'World' which is fair enough, but Walter Pardon under 'Singer/Songwriter'?? Still, it's not all bad. We can give up trying to define Folk now - given that it doesn't exist! No more 'Horse' arguments. :-) |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: GUEST Date: 15 Feb 09 - 07:31 AM Lol, sorry did I raise a off limits and done to death topic!? I was just amazed that itunes could abolish such a fundmental music genre. Oh well another reason for me to hate Apple. |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: GUEST,Stephen L Date: 04 Mar 09 - 06:58 PM If anybody from Apple is listening, I think this stinks... I used to go to the Folk genre page all the time to find new music. Now the stuff that I listen to is spread out between country, rock, singer/songwriter. Lame. |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Art Thieme Date: 04 Jul 09 - 06:53 PM Becks, Thanks for noting that the good stuff has, indeed, gone missing. A folksinger is what I was for 40 years. The best thing that has happened to the idea of being a folksinger is that the aspects of the music business that I truly dislike and disrespect (I've avoided saying hate) has now left us alone again to appreciate, to champion, and strive to educate youth about. The music has always survived within the folk genre you speak of. Thanks, again, for noting the glaring reality of this omission within the big picture.. Actually, it simply doesn't matter a whit that WE are deemed unworthy of generating massive quantities of dollars for the money machine that is really all that the music industry is. The music is still out there, waiting for us... Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: MikeT Date: 05 Jul 09 - 08:44 PM This reminds me of one of my favorite Utah Phillips quotes, "Today, revolutionary music is music that you make yourself. Welcome to the Revolution!" I mean, we all make our own music so we don't really need no stinkin' iTunes do we? Perhaps they are looking for folks (there's that word again) who have to buy there music. Mike |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 06 Jul 09 - 11:36 AM Folk lurked under my radar, long before iTunes failed to notice it... |
Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 06 Jul 09 - 01:01 PM Idle speculation... Perhaps the "folk" category was dropped because, unlike other categories, what's meant by the term is culturally derived. As a global concern, iTunes needs a set of categories whose meanings don't change from one culture to another. Rock is rock and blues is blues, regardless of one's culture, but what may be homegrown folk music in one culture may be esoteric "world music" in another. |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: northern lass Date: 20 Nov 09 - 01:34 PM It's Becks here and I am back! Allbeit with a new name as I changed computers and couldn't remember my passwords. iTunes is great and I love my ipod but I am not a huge fan of apple computers although they are fine for the individual home user. I have nothing but issues with them for business use. There is only 5 catogories now on iTunes, not quite sure I fit into any of them! And I certainly have no idea where to find the stuff i like. I'm not sure I want to be in the singer/songwriter section or the Alternative. And I am certainly not Rock, Pop or Classical. Where would the like of Martin Carthy or Rusby or Woomble, Drever and McCusker go? What's folk music anyway? Only probably one of the oldest forms of music and its been pushed out. I have a bee in my bonnet and I don't care! bzzz bzzz bzzz. |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: GUEST,beatledan Date: 26 May 10 - 07:58 PM Yeah, I'd say there is no loyalty cause just like the rest of those corporate clones, it's all about money. Anyway, Folkalley.com is a really great station. I have heard mostly great stuff on there and you can right to it and listen to it while you have other windows open. Enjoy! I play folk and Flamenco and I will never stop! |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: EnglishFolkfan Date: 11 Sep 10 - 08:46 PM Hi Dug, the Ping part of iTunes is very dumb atm. I am miffed because I cannot sign on with my online name, as used on here and all other Social Networks, and which I have been using for so many years that people wouldn't know me by my real name. Most people I know via SN's who like me are long time Apple+iTune users are saying the same as you, that until Artists are signed up there is no real music network to be part of. Bob Boilen from NPR Music has written a piece about it on the NPR Music blog. But, as with most things Apple they launch in stages so I suspect this is very early days and more will be added. You are right about there being no Folk genre in Ping and I wonder what will happen when Folk Artists do join, for example I can't exactly see Bellowhead listing themselves as singer/songwriter or World music! Another aspect for Apple launching a music SN has been suggested and that is: they may be getting into music streaming. Bear in mind Spotify is not available in America & though Steve Jobs boasted about having 160 million iTunes users around the world it is very much the US market Apple aim for. Streaming music as a paid for service is something Apple could easily do and continue to sell the tracks via iTunes. So, I have 'joined' Ping but like many am lurking behind my privacy screen to await further developments. Hi Ralphie, I guess they call it Celtic ;~) No seriously I have no idea if other countries define us narrowly. I do know in Spotify there are many 'genre' definitions and folk may be found by individual countries eg Swedish Folk & by type eg neo traditional folk, urban folk and many others but how these 'genres' were/are decided I haven't a clue! |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Ralphie Date: 13 Sep 10 - 12:50 AM Hi EFF. Just a thought. If i-Tunes created a sub genre named "Englih Folk" I wonder how it would be defined? (retreats rapidly to the sound of can openers!!) |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Dug Date: 14 Sep 10 - 07:04 PM "I have "folk" on my itunes as a genre!!" How did you manage that Dennis? I can't see it named as a genre any more. |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Desert Dancer Date: 14 Sep 10 - 10:37 PM As far as I can see, in your own iTunes music database (not the iTunes Store), if you had Folk, you still do. You can create your own genre names, if you want. But, incoming stuff won't be Folk until you label it as such. A couple of cds that I just purchased, published this summer and last year, showed the genre "Country & Folk" when I imported them to iTunes. I don't know if the cd producers can name their own genres... or if this is where you find "Folk" now. ~ Becky in Tucson |

Subject: RE: iTunes - Folk genre gone missing! From: Dennis the Elder Date: 15 Sep 10 - 11:12 AM Dug and Becky, I have no problem at all. One theory could be that it may have something to do with the how long ago the CD was produced. Only last week I put 3CDs I had on iTunes and "Folk popped up in the Genre column all on its own, for all of them, but all were fairly old. Obviously, if the music is purchased from iTunes this may be different. |
