Roll up, roll up for the return to Portaferry, Co. Down, and the other event of 2004 (other than the Eurogathering in Hull9) - LOUGHSTOCK II!!

This fantastic event is to be held on Friday 30th January - Sunday 1st February (St. Brigid's Day).

I've put together a web page full of relevant information, and it can be found by clicking here!

Any other questions - just ask.
Check out some photos of the 2003 happenings, and read a thread about what went on last year.

Fib Mattock Girl Detective is on the case again! Well done - you've avoided St Davids Day this time! I've written it in the diary - a lot depends on whether I'm 'in employment' at that stage ...

Have now the booked flights, Fib. I could not resist your selling tempting offer of a rematch. Let's hope Barholm comes up with goods in terms of a reservation for Sandy and me.
I have also splashed out on a car hire for this trip and am willing to give a lift to or from Belfast City Airport (ie the little one on the north-east of the city, not the international one to the west!) if anyone is on the same flight. Flying from Birmingham International on Thu 29 Jan on flight BE406 (dep 12.20 & arr 13.20) and on flight BE415 on Sun 1 Feb (dep 18.45 & arr 19.45).
See you all there!

If Yorkshire/Humberside catters see that Jet2 is offering flights to Belfast International from Leeeds/Bradford. They are £9.00 each way at present, plus taxes. About £86.00 for 2 people, Easy Jet was £52.00 for 2 people a week ago.

Still waiting for Barholm to get in contact.

Eric, I can pay you or Barholm, does not matter.

What matters is that it is quite expensive to send money from Germany to UK - so if it is possible to pay in Portaferry I'd be glad...

Btw., if Barholm wants real names, see PM.

Hi Everyone,

Very tempted (with a little help from Eric....) to come over as well! Flight to Belfast from Amsterdam is easy, but after that??
Seen some buslines etc. on the mentioned website, but is anyone perhaps passing by Belfast Airport, or flying in any time during the 29th and willing to share some means of transportation? Haven't booked a flight yet, so maybe there's some way to compare (more)flying times or such?

Won't bring my topless swimsuit, sorry, no room for the antifreeze in my weekendbag!!!

I am so jealous of all your plans. But maybe I will be able to come next year.

I spent five wonderful summers in Ireland in the mid-80's but then got married--traded Ireland for a fine wife and eventually 2 wonderful kids. But now,my 15 year old daughter has fallen in love with Ireland (after spending two weeks there in 2000--my first time back, and not nearly long enough) and wants to spend her junior year abroad in Ireland, if we can arrange it. (And we are willing to do it independently if we can't find an agency to do it through--anyone interested in taking (for the school year) a 15 year old Yank girl who rides horses--C3 in Pony Club--is a competitive rock climber, straight A student, polite, and also punk-dressing and very individualistic, and learning focail ansin agus focail anseo (sp?)???

At any rate, if (or rather when) she finds a placement there, I will surely visit--maybe at the end of January. I hope, I hope.

David

Or go to London and get a Ryannair flight to Dublin? (Sorry for thread drift.)

Someone told me there were some splendid musicians from Bangor at Portaferry last year. Did they include Dianna Boullier by any chance, or Geordie McAdam?

Can't remember their names Fionn but there were an excellent husband and wife pair. Both excellent fiddlers and he a s**t hot tenor banjo player too.

I got roundly castigated at that session for playing the local "finishing tune" before the end (how was I to know as a simple London-raised, Belgian-based Sligoman?)! But it was a bodhran player that did the castigating so I didn't take it too personally!

Peace

moo

Fionn - spot on! It was indeed Dianna and Geordie (Nigel being the s**t hot tenor banjo player). Hopefully we'll see them again this year - I know Dianna drops into the Mudcat now and again.

David Ingerson - if your daughter is into rock climbing (the finest of sports!) then Donegal has a lot to offer, I believe (never climbed there meself though). However, I there's no bolted (sports) routes in Ireland - it's all trad, as far as I know. Belfast, Derry and Newcastle (Co. Down) have climbing gyms, and I think there might be some in the universities in Dublin. http://www.climbing.ie/ is a good place to start.
I can't think of anything better than arranging a year away around your favourite hobbies!

Hmm, my first attempts at finding transport seem to indicate that flights from Cork to Belfast and back will cost about 200 euros (Jetmagic), and that the bus going via Dublin takes about 9 hours, and I'm not in Portaferry yet by then. Seems like I'm going by car!

Thanks, Fib. Did Georgie stick to Irish tunes, or was he allowed to treat everyone to some old time? I'll see if they're planning to go next time. (Or maybe you already know?) Once again I know I'll be in Co Down (Bangor and Moira) for several days beforehand - but again, it might prove difficult staying on over the weekend.

Incidentally Dianna had an interesting book published about Irish traditional and some of its exponents: "Exploring Irish Music and Dance" (O'Brien Press, Dublin, 1998).
