Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 20 May 20 - 12:58 PM I have been away from Swinton for over 7 years now so was surprised and pleased to find this thread was still going :-) In this time of not being able to get out to enjoy our music I thought it apt to link Swinton's YouTube channel so whoever is interested can enjoy what we had in offer some years back. It's a mixture of guest appearances and floor spots. The guy that did it had no connection with The running of the club and it is a pretty random mix! Enjoy :-) |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Raggytash Date: 20 May 20 - 01:05 PM For some reason I seldom went to the Swinton club despite it only being 3 or 4 miles from where I lived. On the few occasions I did go it was always great fun. I do remember seeing Peter Ryder there and I think Strawhead who were one of our favourite bands. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 20 May 20 - 02:17 PM Pete is still strutting his stuff and as good as ever, Raggy. Strawhead were, I think, from around Southport and friends of Ged and Sue. We wouldn't have been able to afford them otherwise :-)
Couldn't find Pete on that channel but here is one at the Lion from 2011. Last time I saw him he hadn't changed :-) |

Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 07 May 24 - 05:33 AM With a heavy heart, I am having to pull out of this month's gigs. The West country tour I did had knocked my pipe out, and the pain turned out to be the worst case of shingles my doctor had seen. They are on my back my front my armpit and down my arm and on my hand. I have lost about 30% use of my arm. This is due to fairly serious nerve damage. I am at the doctor again this morning. The pain is manageable but unfortunately, my right arm goes into spasm regularly, and it’s like somebody pouring a kettle of boiling water down my arm, and it doubles me up, and takes about 5 minutes to go off. I’m afraid that lifting and guitar playing is off the agenda. It looks like being a long job. I’m hoping that the nerve route will repair itself in a month or so, but I’m told it could be a lot longer. I daren’t allow my arm to go into spasm on the motorway as you can imagine. Grovelling apologies to all my friends at Swinton, and especially Ged and Sue. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 07 May 24 - 08:05 AM Get well soon, Nick. I would have normally offered you a lift but I already have a commitement at Holmfirth Folk Festival this weekend. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 08 May 24 - 03:03 AM Latest from Sue at Swinton "Unfortunately our guest for Friday 10th MAY 2024 Nick Dow cannot fulfill the booking due to illness. We sent our best wishes for a full recovery and hope Nick will be able to appear at the club soon. Fortunately Lawrence Hoy has kindly agreed to step into the breach. He is a member of Rare Ould Times an Irish band from Wigan. Lawrence has a varied repertoire and may be known by many of you. Looking forward to seeing you all. XxSue" |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 08 May 24 - 06:34 AM I used to have Lawrence's album 'Beyond the Seas' but have no idea what became of it. I remember it was very good and would pop over to Swinton to see if he had another if I was not otherwise engaged |

Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: GUEST,Steve Shaw Date: 14 Aug 24 - 07:33 PM It's possibly worth saying that us wrinklies (65 and over) can get a one-off NHS shingles jab that's very effective. Back to the singing...! |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 15 Aug 24 - 05:10 PM Bit late for Nick I suspect but a good reminder for the rest of us - I had mine along with my last Covid jab. I think it is only over 70s though. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 15 Aug 24 - 06:16 PM I've got a few more medical problems due to the shingles. The virus appears to have caused a potassium deficiency that has shown up in my blood tests. The doctor wants to wait until it is sorted and I am completely out of pain before giving me the jab. I have honoured all gigs to date and I need to take a rest now until I'm sorted. I'll be on Zoom and supporting local Folk clubs. Come next year I hope to be back at Swinton fighting fit, and travelling further afield if they will have me. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: GUEST,Steve Shaw Date: 15 Aug 24 - 07:08 PM Commiserations, Nick. At the very beginning of the pandemic I thought I had shingles, but it turned out to be cellulitis. Since then I've had ten attacks of cellulitis, two of them serious enough to have me in A&E and one of which almost wrecked my kidneys. I've been on antibiotics for a year, and, touch wood, I haven't had an attack during that time. But if there's a jab going, flu, shingles, pneumonia, covid, I've had it! Good luck. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 16 Aug 24 - 02:07 AM Message me if there is anything I can do, Nick. I'm less than 10 miles away |

Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 01 Sep 24 - 05:20 AM Tomorrow, 2 Sept, should be good. Dave, Ged and John, the surviving members of Feet in Mouths, will all be there. Oasis comeback pales into insignificance:-D I shall be there too but don't let that put you off! |

Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 Sep 24 - 08:09 AM A reminder of upcoming events 13th Sept 2024 - GARY & VERA 11th Oct 2024 - JON BRINDLEY 8th NOV 2024 - STAFF FOLK (Ged Todd & Dave Wynn) 13th DEC 2-24 - CHRISTMAS PARTY |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Raggytash Date: 03 Sep 24 - 10:47 AM T'was indeed a great night and a timely reminder of just how good a folk club can be, great singing and playing all night and a real warmth to the people there. Not too surprising I suppose. They all seemed to be Lancastrians who are, as we all know, the friendliest people on the planet! |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Nov 24 - 12:32 PM Very remiss of me not to plug last nights concert but we were packed anyway! What a wonderful night. Songs from Staff Folk and many other took me right back to the heyday of Swinton Folk Club. Plus, I met a fellow 'catter in the gents :-) I think you said Freddie but I'm not sure! Message me on here and we can arrange a more salubrious meeting :-) |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: FreddyHeadey Date: 09 Nov 24 - 07:54 PM I concur. A great evening; a very friendly club with some great musicians & singers supplementing Staff Folk. I'll see about getting up for a singers evening in 2025. |
Subject: RE: Swinton Folk Club, Manchester, UK PermaThread From: Dave the Gnome Date: 10 Nov 24 - 04:07 AM Thanks Freddy PM on its way |
