Subject: RE: BS: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Jim Dixon Date: 17 May 01 - 03:09 PM Here are the folk music programs I've found in North America. I do a lot of searching the Internet for specific songs, and I often find the titles of those songs posted on radio station playlists. Lately I've been saving the URL whenever I run across a new station. Of course, if a show doesn't post its playlist, I'm not likely to run across it.

Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Mark Cohen Date: 19 May 01 - 12:16 AM I've been listening to WKSU in Kent, Ohio for quite a while, now. They have a weekend folk music program that is archived the next day on the net. Tends to be a little heavy on singer-songwriters, but a little less so, recently. And as a songwriter, I don't mind. Great to find out about all these other links! Here in the middle of the Pacific, live folk radio shows are just about nonexistent. At least my side of the Big Island FINALLY has an NPR station now. Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 May 01 - 01:23 PM Folks, I discovered this cool site called The Internet Folk Radio List Database, which purports to list all the radio stations in the world that play folk music! I found their search function kind of hard to use, however, and a lot of the stations were missing web addresses. So, I downloaded the North American portion of the list, edited it a bit, looked up as many missing URL's as I could find, and sorted it by Country, State or Province, City, and call letters, and I converted the URL's to links. The list is still a bit messy for my taste. Some stations are listed more than once, because different programs have different web addresses. Some list all programs separately, some don't. Some syndicated programs are listed only under the station where they originate. I suspect some information is out of date. I wish I had more time to check and correct all this info, but I figured it would be better to put the list out now and let you all start using it.

Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Ron Olesko Date: 21 Jun 01 - 09:37 AM Once again I have to plug my show - sorry for the non-commercial commercial! Along with my co-host Bill Hahn, I host TRADITIONS on WFDU-FM - www.wfdu.fm every Sunday from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time. Bill and I try to feature guests each week, and over the past 20 years we have been lucky to spend time with the "who-who" in the world of folk music. We also present special documentaries, concerts, holiday-theme programs, and tips on auto repair and basket weaving. (Okay, we have been a little slow in coverage for the last two.) We try to offer a full spectrum of folk music - our definition is very broad however we try to anchor the program in traditional music. We have a lot of fun, and the pay is great! Plus no heavy lifting! Seriously, please tune in via the internet at www.wfdu.fm (I will never be able figure out how to create a blue clicky thing) or if you are in the NYC area you can listen in at 89.1 FM. And now back to your regular messages... Ron Olesko Producer/Host WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS |
Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: TexasTom46 Date: 21 Jun 01 - 12:27 PM I would add my thanks to Jim for all of his work on that post. Another thing about The Internet Folk Radio List Database for anyone who has a recording that they would like to get played is that many of the DJs listed indicate what genres of folk music they play on their show, and whether or not they are open to playing submissions by indies. It is a great service in helping indies target their submissions to markets that are (potentially) open to their music. |

There is an hereto unmentioned folk radio show (mine!) that plays from 8-10pm on sundays. David and Allan's "Folking you Up Since 1982"! We don't have tons of material, since this is a college radio show, and for some reason the college hasn't amassed much of a folk collection. Subject: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: saulgoldie Date: 10 Mar 02 - 07:58 AM Most of the folk on the radio is on Public Radio or some college station or other. (Few in power/regulatory positions seem to care much about the consolidation in the broadcasting industry and consequential homogenation of content.) Options for me are faily limited due to the limits of broadcasting ranges and times. Does anyone know about cable or satellite radio? I have heard a few advertisements about both of late, and I was wondering. Of course, advertisements are not reliable sources of information, so I am asking the collected wisdom of The 'Cat. Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Art Thieme Date: 10 Nov 02 - 01:12 AM Good people, you have not even the slightest inkling of an idea just how important radio station WFMT-FM (91.7) has been to the folk community----to all of us on the folk scene in Chicago-----for over FORTY f***ing YEARS ! Hearing this does give me sad pause. THE MIDNIGHT SPECIAL radio program was our P.A. bullhorn to the many fans and lovers who kept us going as we sang our way through the exhilerating '60s, the spandex and plaid '70s, the no-name '80s, and then the $$$$$$$$$$ and the greed of the second coming in two centuries of the gay '90s. (The old cliche became profound even as we watched.) But, friends, seeing this radio station in hard times is like watching my family and my mentors slowly die right in front of me. WFMT was where we got to hear the then still-alive masters of this roots music that became our lives' passions. ---------- Yes, I know; the more things change, the more they get different. But those of us who went up to WFMT every New Years Eve we weren't on the road gigging have memories of songs and singers and harmonies that will never die until we do. Maybe I'm reacting strongly to the posted article because I'd not known of these happenings, but forcing WFMT and other stations to quit broadcasting on the web just so $$$$$$$$$$$ can change hands and dumb-ass laws enforced, well, it is a travesty akin to tossing the baby out with the washwater. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Jan 03 - 04:06 PM Friends: I have finally finished updating the American portion of the list that I first posted back in May, 2001. I have fixed some of the inconsistencies that I didn't like in the original list. Syndicated programs are now listed separately. I classify a program as "syndicated" if it is broadcast from multiple stations that are not all part of the same regional network. (Regional networks are things like Minnesota Public Radio, or Northeast Public Radio; they consist of several stations that cover at most a few adjacent states, and the programming is mostly the same at all stations within the network.) Most of the websites for syndicated programs have archived programs that you can listen to online, but generally, you can't listen to any show "live" through the program's website. For that, you'd have to go to one of the stations that carries the program. I think all the websites for syndicated programs contain lists of stations that carry them -- except, for some reason, Dr. Demento. Except for syndicated programs, I have dropped all program names. They are just too volatile to keep up to date. I have personally checked all the links and made sure they link to actual websites. (There are a few stations listed here that apparently don't have websites.) I have dropped a few stations that apparently no longer carry folk or blues programs, usually because they advertise themselves as "all jazz" or "all classical." I have left in several college stations that apparently don't carry folk or blues now, but they do carry a variety of genres, and I figure they may add folk or blues in the future. (Programming at college stations tends to change every semester, and the content changes according to the tastes of whatever students volunteer to be DJ's.) I have added frequencies for all stations. I have also compiled a list of radio networks and other useful websites. See the messages below. |

Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Strupag Date: 26 Jan 03 - 09:28 PM I tried to start a similar thread about 3 months ago and got 3 replies! I'm delighted that this one has taken off and thanks to all those who have contributed to my future insomnia! Actually for my tuppence worth, since someone has already mentioned Radio Scotland, there are a couple of distant ones I often listen to. There's Radio Newfoundland which plays all Newfie artists. There's a programme on 3RRR in Melbourne which is called Old Folk Show which goes out on 4 am GMT on Tuesdays. Finally there's Rod Mackie's "Sweet Music" (good old fasioned Nova Scotian music) on GKEC and goes out at 10 PM gmt -all on the net. |

Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: GUEST,Big Jim from Jackson Date: 28 Dec 03 - 01:31 PM I'm glad that Guest, Chip 2447 who named our program, and Jim Dixon, who listed our station have both found and posted information on "Your Folk Connection." We produce an hour-long show that is carried on our home station, KRCU as well as KBIA,KKTR,WEIU, and K210AU. We are very loose in our definition of folk, but I think you will hear stuff that no one else plays. Some are current release; some are very old material. You are as apt to hear Vernon Dalhart, Uncle Dave Macon, The Blue Sky Boys, and Jimmy Driftwood as Bill Staines, Pete Seeger, Iris Dement, and Nickle Creek. We can be listened to on the web at either www.KBSI.org or www.KRCU.org. Both stations broadcast us at 7:00PM CST on Saturday evenings. We play Barton and Para, The Grace Family, lots of Folk-Legacy stuff, Judy Domeny, and some Art Thieme on too rare occasions. You may hear English pub songs, Donegan, The Wurzels, The Copper family, The Yetties, Gary and Vera Aspey, and plenty of Australian music as well. Listen to us a couple of times and get a feel for what we do. Big Jim, co-host |
Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Sooz Date: 29 Dec 03 - 08:26 AM I'm listening to the broadcast of the BBC Write a song for Lincolnshire competition right now. (BBC radio Lincs 94.9) More nervous now than I was on finals night back in October! Seriously though, Radio Lincs supports Folk Music really well - and thats not just because I won the competition. |
Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Alio Date: 29 Dec 03 - 08:34 AM And don't forget 'Sounds of Folk' on BBC GMR (Greater manchester area) Monday evenings from 8-9p.m.. It was started up again last May (after several years absence) and is still going strong thanks to the assistant editor, Mike Shaft. I've had some great feedback from listeners, so "so far, so good"!! Ali |
Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Chris in Wheaton Date: 29 Dec 03 - 02:52 PM Listen to Frank Hennessy's Celtic Heartbeat archived on Radio Wales. He started last week's "best of 2003" show with San Diego's Joel Raphael, so you can see he does not let the name of the show limit his selections. Frank is a folk singer too, and he tells a good story. Can't go wrong with Frank. There is also a folk show on Radio Cymru at midnight on Sunday nights, but it is not archived. Chris yn Wheaton |
Subject: RE: FOLK MUSIC ON THE RADIO From: Walking Eagle Date: 29 Dec 03 - 10:38 PM The Counrty Corner on WCOJ 1420 AM. in Chester Co. PA. He plays Bluegrass, Old Time and Western Swing. I haven't heard it recently and I'm not sure if it is even still on or is webcast. The show kind of gets pushed around on Sunday because of Penn State football. |

Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: GUEST,Mike B, Date: 21 Feb 07 - 01:26 PM The planned merger between XM and Sirius could mean the end of 24 hour folk music programming on satellite radio in the US. Sirus shut down its FolkTown channel in 2005 and its chairman Mel Karmazin will be running the new combined company when and if the merger goes through. He's on record as saying that it's not cost effective to retain musical genres not believed to appeal to younger demographics. XM's Folk Village could eventually be either discontinued or combined with other niche music channels such as bluegrass and blues. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 21 Feb 07 - 01:37 PM It is all speculation and way too early to guess. You can't assume what decisions will be made because the business model has changed. There is also a good chance that XM would have dropped their folk channel, but the addition of Bob Dylan's show gained attention to the channel. IF the decision is made, it will not be because one person doesn't like folk music. It is because folk music is not drawing enough people to satellite radio. I notice there are no channel dedicated to polka music. If someone could come up with data that would show 100,000 people would sign up to listen to polka, and only 1000 are listening to folk - guess which station would stay. It comes down to supply and demand. Satellite radio is not a public service, it is a business. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: Bernard Date: 21 Feb 07 - 01:40 PM Don't forget Radio Britfolk! Ali O'Brien's Sounds of Folk (was on BBC GMR until April 2006) is on fortnightly (programme 20 is due on February 26th). The programme will soon be on Oldham Community Radio (99.7 FM if you're near enough to the 25w transmitter on the Civic Centre!). The station is due to start broadcasting from March 17th 2007, and Sounds of Folk will be live on Monday evenings. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: GUEST,Mike B. Date: 22 Feb 07 - 03:06 AM XM seems somewhat like a public service because it offers channels devoted to music genres long since abandoned by commercial FM stations. If this merger clears the regulatory hurdles and the folk channel fails to survive the subsequent programming alterations, I'll almost certainly cancel my subscription and look into internet radio options such as Folk Alley. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 22 Feb 07 - 09:27 AM I agree, it does "seem" like a public service, but they do not get funding like public radio stations do to support programs that reach a small audience. Even though XM and Sirius claim to offer great choice, they will drop a format if it is not proving sucessful. Unfortunately internet radio can't be picked up in cars, but I do see people cancelling subscriptions. Unfortunately there won't be enough people cancelling to make any difference. The thing to do is to write e-mails NOW which helps show their management that people are supportive of the station. And let's hope that Bob Dylan's show does not disappear. He brings ears to that channel. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: GUEST,Eye Lander Date: 22 Feb 07 - 10:42 AM Try Celtic Connections BBC Radio Wales on Saturday evenings. Always on listen again. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 22 Feb 07 - 12:35 PM Where I live, there is no folk music on the radio now. As with cancer, slowly, that is becoming the name of the game in many places here in the USA. And to me, Garrison K. is not, and never has been, a folk music show. I had a national (USA) live, concert, folk music program on National Public Radio during the 1980s, and it was a constant fight what with trying to get the powers that be, then, to hire folksingers and not rather shallow singer-songwriters. Art |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 22 Feb 07 - 12:57 PM I believe that The Durbervilles host a show on Sunday afternoon on Radio Leeds. I haven't heard it but I imagine it would contain some quality music. |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: sed Date: 08 Mar 07 - 11:25 AM I've been off the air for about two years even though the university website never seems to get around to removing my name and show from their webpage. Record companies send me promo CD's even though I've written to inform them that I'm not producing a radio show. So, I talked to the general manager to see if I might produce a special every six months or so to play the absolute best of what I've received. He'll let me know after checking with the network. We'll see! I still really want to produce a regular Christian folk music show from my home in the woods but so far that has not happened. But some of the secular music is acceptable, too. I'm rarely online anymore but am happy at home and playing guitar, singing and writing and editing older orginal songs more and more. Praise GOD! Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: GUEST,YOUNG FOLK RADIO SHOW Date: 31 Jul 07 - 10:07 AM There's another great folk radio show in Melbourne on the Student Youth Network SYN 907, called YOUNG FOLK. They're taking a break for a couple of months but will be back on the airwaves soon, check their myspace for details. They play a lot of young people playing a new and old style of folk and Alt/Country music. Its a blast! check it out! |
Subject: RE: Folk Music on the Radio From: Abby Sale Date: 31 Jul 07 - 05:42 PM The good part is that there are still quite a few good streamed shows so that good shows in weird, cockamamie towns (Hi, Ron) can be enjoyed world-wide. Especially on Sundays. Good stuff. A brand new one that I much enjoy: Sun 10-11, Eastern Standard Time (G-5) Mudcatter, Jack Beck's, 'Celtic Clanjamphry' WETS-FM, E Tennessee Univ. A direct link for to plug in to Winamp: "http://amber.streamguys.com:5380/WETS.m3u" or Win Media Player http://azulweb.streamguys.com/wets.asx or browse to http://www.wets.org/ Art, I'm sort of surprised Chicago don't have a local show. You're in Chicago? But there are really many streamed now and mp3 sites too. They shouls do more thiemed shows, though. Abby aka Stabby Abby |
