The Eleventh Annual   Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival will be taking place throughout Portsmouth NH on 25 and 26 September, with an informal start of Friday evening at the regular Press Room Session.

Hello Friends of PMFF,

Big announcement!! The schedule for this year's festival is now
available online. The link to view the schedule page at our website is:

Once there, you'll see the link for the .pdf Schedule Grid near the top
of the page. The grid is the only place to find out where the different
musicians and singers will be performing, what times, and with whom.

One thing you'll notice is that we've added a fun new event. We will be
welcoming in the festival and generally announcing our presence around
town in the form of a Roving Shanty Sing. A crew of performers will
begin at 10:30 AM in front of RiRa (22-26 Market Sq.) in the Market
Square. They will choose several spots around the town to stop and sing
a couple of shanties, moving on from place to place. We hope the
unsuspecting public will be surprised and interested, and will join us
for some of the other events over the weekend.

At around noon, the final stop on the roving tour will be the 2d Annual
NH Fish and Lobster Festival, known as the Fishtival, held at Prescott
Park (105 Marcy St.). Great Bay Sailor will deliver a full set of music
there, while the other performers continue on to their own gigs
elsewhere. The Fishtival celebrates the working port of Portsmouth, its
fishing folk and the fish themselves. There will be plenty to eat, with
local restaurants supplying seafood delights galore! Check the Fishtival

BTW, for those who are interested, I just got some news...

We (Mudhook) have been working on a CD, and we just confirmed that we are going to get a small batch (special 2010 PMFF editions) back in time for this weekend! After forming as a band specifically for the PMFF four years ago, we're excited to actually get these done in time for this year's festival.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend!

Hello Friends of PMFF and all maritime music lovers,

We're all really primed for this weekend's (11th annual) Portsmouth
Maritime Folk Festival (Saturday & Sunday, September 25 & 26, 2010)! To
get yourselves psyched up, check out our website again to read some of
the PMFF press. Print out a poster to tape to your car window (mobile
advertising!) while your car is parked in Portsmouth. And check the
Market Square webcam to get a look at the scene downtown.
As we close in on this year's celebration, there are just a few last
reminders and announcements.

A major piece of news for us is that Celtic Crossing
[http://celticcrossing.com/] has stepped up again and offered a very
generous donation towards the production of this year's Saturday evening
concert. We are most grateful to this local business, and encourage our
fans and audience members to visit them on Congress St, thank them for
their kind support, check out their wares and maybe even find a special
gift for someone on your list.

The 2010 schedule IS up and available at our website, and we do not
anticipate any further changes:

to a few brief notes on the various workshops, events and venues,
there's also a link near the top of the page that will open a .pdf file
that is a table-view of the weekend's activities. Get out the yellow
highlighters!

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, we have a new opening event -
Roving Shantying around the town. The singers involved aren't giving
away any secrets, so you'll have to catch them outside RiRa at 10:30AM
Saturday, as they begin singing, to find out where they're headed next.
They'll be like a flash mob, popping up suddenly somewhere in town,
singing a couple of shanties, and moving on!

To end the movable shanty feast, Great Bay Sailor will perform (and
advertise our OWN festival) from the stage of another festival - the 2nd
Annual NH Fish & Lobster Festival at Prescott Park
[http://www.prescottpark.org/fish.cfm]. The "Fishtival" promotes the
local fishing industry, locally caught fish, local seafood merchants and
seafood restaurants, and local maritime music. This is a free event,
with the focus on good, fresh seafood to eat right there on the banks of
the river, though there will be a charge for any food purchased.

Parking has gotten to be quite a competitive sport here in Portsmouth.
There will be more events than just our own in town this weekend, so
please DO leave time for possible traffic issues, and for finding
parking. The City of Portsmouth has a fine parking map at this link:

Most of our festival events are held in the area between numbers 1, 4,
and 5 on the map. The farther out you're willing to park, the better
your luck will be. State St, Middle St, Court St, and Parrott Ave are
good bets.

Well, I've managed to succumb to an errant bug. Throat scratchy yesterday, but got name tags done, etc. then ClaireBear and I had "lunch" at Lago's Lone Oak over in Rye -- I had a pumpkin pie malt (Lago's makes their own ice cream) -- then we took the beach route through New Castle to Portsmouth.

The regular Friday session serves as the lead-in event for the festival -- Liam Robinson, Ken Schatz and Ken Sweeney were there as well as a bunch of out of town festival goers, including the Albany, NY contingent and the Berkshires contingent and others.

The session was going great guns when the bug really started getting to me and I bugged out, so to speak. Though my throat was scratchy, I DID have a voice, sang a couple songs and was of two minds as to whether to sing while I still could or go home and rest both me and my voice.

This morning I'm definitely down for the count -- sore throat, exhausted despite sleep, equilibrium problems and nausea. Not a cold; definitely flu-ish. I've been maintaining distance; I don't want anyone else to catch it!

If I feel better later, I'll head to Portsmouth for the concert tonight. Tom and I have a set at the Athenaeum tomorrow and SOMEONE has to have a voice...

When I left the session last night at 7 p.m. last night, it was well on the way to being as populated as the Saturday PMFF sings usually are.

I'm sorry to miss it -- and I'm giving the concert a miss -- but I'm just too dragged out with this flu-ishness. I need to be feeling more than halfway human by our set at the Portsmouth Athenaeum tomorrow and being Tom's voice at the Rusty Hammer afterwards. I may not be able to contribute to the closing shanty blast, though.

Thanks to all who organized, performed and volunteered at the festival. it has been a lot of years since my trio, shipping news performed in portsmouth. the kids had a great time. they sang the entire trip home to new haven without repeating a song. i asked them when they learned that many songs.......

until next year. i will certainly attend and make a donation in advance. do i do that through the website. i might actually be up on the nov 19 to celebrate my birthday. i will see some of you at the press room if i do. all the best to everyone

Thank you, BB! Having the festivals on two separate weekends should be good for performers, too, especially if some from far away can appear at both! Now I have to try to find an inexpensive hotel in Portsmouth. The whole bedbug thing has been putting me off travel, but I know they are in luxury and budget hotels, so I might as well live within my means.--Janet

OT but there are some bedbug precautions...they say to keep luggage inthe bathroom, inspect bed carefully, looking at mattress, headboards etc. Take luggage home, put on cement, like garage etc. and unpack directly to laundry. If it is sunny, put outside in the sun or put in plastic bags. DOn't bring into bedroom. Travel lightly and inspect everything. mg

Thanks to everyone for sharing the photos! There are some great shots

(the exception being Linn's pic of me at the performer brunch ... apparently the caffeine hadn't hit my system yet. My name tag should say 'don't photography until after 12 noon.')

I really enjoyed seeing Jeff Warner and Ken Sweeney perform at The Works on Sunday. That was the first time getting to see Ken perform – I even missed his set on Saturday night – so seeing them perform together was a treat.

And I was blown away by David Coffin et.al. at the Saturday night concert. Great stuff and you could tell he was genuinely having a blast.

Thanks to all the volunteers, fellow performers, venues, and our illustrious festival leaders.

And since Mary asked, I'll mention that we do have a handful of festival edition CDs left that are yet not spoken for ... but not many ... so if you'd like one, you can either:
* drop us a note at www.mudhook.net and we'll get back to you, or
* visit Celtic Crossing in Portsmouth, since they have a few for sale, or
* hope that one of us is at the next Press Room shanty sing and we have copies left.

We're not releasing this special edition on any online retailers, so those are the choices.

Also, some people asked what the difference between the festival edition and the upcoming CD will be. Basically, the festival edition features songs that will not appear on the later version, and we'll replace them with different songs on the final release. It was really important to us that we make this release unique and special for the 2010 PMFF.

My personal thanks to anyone who already picked up a copy – I sincerely hope you enjoy it. And since this is our first recording, any and all feedback is appreciated.
