Subject: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Azizi Date: 12 Feb 07 - 10:46 PM Don't ask. I'm really not sure why, but it occurred to me to wonder what songs -folk and otherwise have been sung about feet... big feet, small feet, feet with shoes on or off, smelly feet, dirty feet, clean feet etc etc etc. Is a list of songs about feet an important matter? No. Could a list of songs about feet be interesting & fun? I think so. And so I step out in a new thread with the hope that these feet won't fail me now. Join in if you're boots are made for walkin! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Azizi Date: 12 Feb 07 - 10:53 PM Of course, that "These Boots Are Made For Walking" was a big 1966? hit for Nancy Sinatra. If you can get YouTube you can see this classic??? at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OU7Nezg7Ls&mode=related&search= It seems to me that this video is focusing on differnt parts of women's bodies than feet. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Azizi Date: 12 Feb 07 - 10:58 PM Of course, Jessica Simpson also did a cover of "These Boots Arre Made For Walking" And apparently, these other singers also recorded this song: Nancy Sinatra (1965) Lee Hazlewood (1966) Mrs. Miller (1966) Jane Morgan (1966) Loretta Lynn (1967) Symarip (1969) The Residents (1974) Amanda Lear (1977) Nick Cave (1978) Paula Yates (1982) Megadeth (1985) Operation Ivy (1989) Crispin Glover (1989) Anita Lane (1991) Barry Adamson (1991) Jewel (1991) Billy Ray Cyrus (1992) LaToya Jackson (1993) Boy George (1995) Geri Halliwell (1998) Amanda Lear (1999) Sarge (2000) French Affair (2001) KMFDM (2001) The Fixx (2002) Antonio Banderas (2004) Lil' Kim (2005) Little Birdy (2005) Yuna Ito (2006) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Azizi Date: 12 Feb 07 - 11:15 PM "Juba" is one of the more familiar secular African American songs from the 19th century or ealier. Here's a Juba song from Thomas W. Talley's 1922 book "Negro Folk Songs" {Kennikat Prese Edition, 1968, p. 9} Juba dis, an' Juba dat, Juba skin dat Yaller Cat. Juba! Juba! Juba jump an' Juba sing, Juba cut dat Pigeon's Wing. Juba! Juba! Juba, kick off Juba's shoe, Juba, dance dat Juba Jew. Juba! Juba! Juba, whirl dat foot about. Juba, blow dat candle out. Juba! Juba! Juba circle, Raise de Latch. Juba do dat Long Dog Scratch. Juba! Juba! -snip- Talley notes that "the Pigeon Wing", "the Juba Jew", "Raise The Latch", and "the Long Dog Scratch" are specific dance steps. As an instructional dance song, this version of Juba is a great great great granddaddy to instructional dance songs such as Wilson Picket's R&B song "Land Of A Thousand Dances" http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/thefullmonty/landof1000dances.htm and Elephant Man's Dancehall Reggae song Pon De River {Pon De Bank} http://www.tsrocks.com/e/elephant_man_texts/pon_di_river_pon_di_bank.html |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Azizi Date: 12 Feb 07 - 11:48 PM I think a number of 19th century and early-mid 20th century African American songs about feet size and songs about different kinds of shoes or people being shoeless reflect a growing preference for city ways and a growing distain for folks being "country" or acting "country". Here's two examples from Talley's "Negro Folk Songs"-one of them makes reference to being shoeless, and the other-well, I'm sharing because it's related to this subject, and I believe it merits inclusion in a Mudcat music thread: I'M A "ROUND-TOWN" GENTLEMAN I Hain't no wagon, han'nt no dray, Jes come to down wid a load o' hay. I hain't no cornfield to go to bed Wid a lot o' hay-seeds in my head. I'se a "round -town" Gent an' I don't choose To wuk in de mud, an' do widout shoes. {Talley, pg. 108} THIS SUN IS HOT Dis sun are hot, Dis hoe are havvy, Dis grass grow furder dan I can reach; An' as I looks At dis Cotton fiel', I thinks I mus' a' been valled to preach. {Talley, pg. 108} |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Scrump Date: 13 Feb 07 - 04:51 AM Is "You Need Feet" (posted above) really traditional? It was issued on a single in 1958, on the B side of his top ten hit "Mad Passionate Love", and I believed it was written by him as a parody of the then recent hit by Max Bygraves "You Need Hands". (The idea of it being recorded by Chad and Jeremy is bizarre!) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Azizi Date: 13 Feb 07 - 09:18 AM It's a tough feat, finding songs about feet and not ones that just mention feet. But I'm not about to shoe any example away from this thread. Since I'm not footin the bill, I welcome all songs that speak of mean feats and wonderful feets. This thread {or should it be this shoe lace? Naw, that's stretching it a bit too much}...As I was saying this thread is inclusive enough to include songs {or rhymes} about feet or toes, or boots or slippers or going barefoot. I appreciate each and every example, so "On with the shoe"! * * spoken in an Ed Sullivanist voice. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Azizi Date: 13 Feb 07 - 09:38 AM Btw, upthread, a while back, I mentioned an instructional dance by Elepant Man called "Pon De River" {"Pon De Bank"}. While that song isn't about feet, it does mention shoe. Therefore, it's fittin that I include this excerpt of that song itself: Yea good to go [Chorus ] I've Seen Nuff Dance Before But I've Never Seen A Dance Like This I've Seen Nuff Dance Before But A Dah One Yah Come Top Di List [Verse 1] A'right Real Badman Nuh Wear People Pants We Tek Dancing To A Higher Rank We Spen' Pound, An Wi Spen Frank John Have A New Dance A Lock Jamaican An' BronX Pon Di River Pon Di Bank Kick Out Yuh Shoes Because Yuh Foot Dem Nuh Cramp Inna Di River Pan Di Bank John Have A New Dance A Lock Jamaican An Bronx(yeah) Dung Di Frank, Wi A Go Dung Di Frank Like A Balla, Wi A Go Dung Di Frank Yuh Jeep Pretty, An' Gas Inna Yuh Tank Bus Di New Dance, Yuh Nuh Wear People Pants Gi Dem A Run Jhon, Gi Dema Run, Gi Dem A Run We An' Di Girls A Have A Fun Gi Dem A Run, Gi Dem A Run, Gi Dem A run Wi An' Di Girls A Have A Fun http://www.tsrocks.com/e/elephant_man_texts/pon_di_river_pon_di_bank.html -snip- This song is written & sung in Jamaican patois {pronounced "patwa"] . In my opinion, the use of patois in songs reflects the increased group pride and self-confidence Jamaicans have in their everyday spoken word. Btw, here's some information on the deejay {vocalist} Elephant Man: " Dubbed dumbo Elephant - supposedly for having larger than average ears like the Disney character - by member 'Crack Scull' at the age of 13, the name stuck with him until manhood when it evolved into Elephant Man. It was 'Crack Scull' who first took him to his studio in Seaview and encouraged him to make good use of the talents that were heard on the street corners and while hanging out at gates of other studios. Elephant Man had already discovered his talent at the age of 15 when he used to use school desks to beat out rhythms and rhymes to go along with them, when he determined that deejaying would be his ticket to success. Despite threats from his mother, who preferred him to 'go look work', Elephant persevered because of a conviction that deejaying was "his aim"... Elephant Man has had an enviable career: appearing on every major show in the Caribbean, Europe and the Americas as a part of the Scare Dem Crew and is now ready to offer the same opportunity to younger artists by producing and mentoring - which he says is a way of developing the music and assuring his longevity in the business. Elephant recounts when he was just starting out, "Bounty [Bounty Killer, another dancehall reggae star who gave Elephant Man his start]say it a go hard fi one-one man bus out fi we come together den a bigger tings" - a philosophy which he plans to employ to develop talent around him." http://www.reggae-vibes.com/profiles/elephantman/elephantman.htm -snip- I'd 'translate' that saying as "It's hard for one man to go it alone. He's liable to fail. But if we come together, we can do bigger things {and succeed}. |

I believe that it is of African American origin, but I'm not sure of that. The leader is supposed to add other rhyming verses using the same formula. I've used this song in children's after-school and summer programming and added other verses such as "Well, you stop right still/cock a doodle doodle doo/and you turn around/cockadoodle doodle doo/ and you touch the ground etc; "Put your hands in the air cock a doodle doodle doo/and wave them them up there" and "Put your hand on your nose and touch your toes." etc. "Let your right foot slip" is performed to the beat by pointing your right toe in front of you one step and then pointing it in back. I've found this movement mentioned in some early 20th century Afrian American dance songs {none of which I can think of now}. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Charley Noble Date: 13 Feb 07 - 04:39 PM Azizi- Well, let me see if I can walk in your shoes awhile, and not get de-feeted. Now there's a lot of old blues verses such as: I know a woman who's nine-feet tall, Sleeps in the kitchen with her feet in the hall... But I betcha never run acrost the one about the sock-troll: The next came in was a sock troll Whose dress was exceedingly droll, Whose dress was exceedingly droll, When he joined in the jovial crew For he was attired in socks he'd snatched, Argyle, stripped, and some was patched, And not a single one did match -- When Jones's Ale was new, me boys, When Jones's Ale was new! And in another thread I included a sample of my ballad commemorating the loss of Dr. Dogbody's Leg. Well, you get the whole thing because I know you care: Words by Charles Ipcar © 2005 Inspired by Doctor Dogbody's Leg, James Norman Hall (co-author of Mutiny on the Bounty), © 1940 Tune: traditional "Paddy West" Dr. Dogbody's Leg Now as I was a-walking round Portsmouth town, Feeling cold and glum, The Cheerful Tortoise was close at hand So I steps in for some rum; I says to the landlord, "A glass of your best," And he turns to me with a smile, "I'll pour you a glass of old Port Royal, Won't you sit by the fire awhile?" As I was sipping that rum, me boys, I heard an awful din, As all at once the door banged open And some old shipmates blew in; One was a Royal Navy surgeon, Dogbody was his name, He'd served the King full fifty years, You may recall his fame. No one could slice off an arm or leg With greater speed or skill; No one could stitch up a gaping wound, A wound you'd swear would kill; But the strangest tales, ever regaled, And heed me well, I beg, How that surgeon bold, the truth be told, How he'd come to lose his leg. He'd lost a leg in '68, To the spur of a fighting cock; Or was it lost to a sea serpent's bite As he dangled it from a rock? He'd lost a leg to a pistol ball, Mistook for a highwayman; Or was it lost in Copenhagen, Where Nelson led the van? Chorus: So raise your glass of old Port Royal, Let's toast that surgeon bold, Likewise his leg, and his famous peg, Let another tale be told! I mind the time he took a ride, Out from old Cape Town; He and a friend on ostrich-back, When he looked about with a frown; A heathen arrow had pierced his thigh, Then they dined on ostrich egg, But when they found their way back town, Dogbody had lost his leg. (CHO) He lost a leg to a cutlass stroke, 'Board a Yankee privateer; Or was it crushed by a loose cannon With the Greenwich pensioners? A leg was lost to the guillotine, But he somehow saved his head; Then he lost a leg in old Basque Roads, It's a wonder he ain't dead! (CHO) Now who could forget that wintry night, Catherine the Great by his side? The howling wolves in close pursuit, It looked like his last sleigh ride, As one by one her footmen dropped off, To be torn to bits in a trice; When his turn came, Dogbody was game, And for Russia, his sacrifice. And so, kind friends, this evening ends, Let's toast that surgeon bold; Likewise his leg, and his famous peg, Now these stories have been told; And while some may doubt, the truth will out, Your forbearance I'll not beg, Though these tales be wild, I'd not beguile, I'd never pull your leg. Notes from Dr. Dogbody's Leg: In Portsmouth, by the fireside of Will Tunn's Cheerful Tortoise taproom, British seamen quaff pints and regale themselves with tales of grapeshot and gales. Enter the one-legged Royal Navy surgeon, Dr. F. Dogbody, raconteur extraordinaire. In each of the ten stories, the good doctor recounts the loss of his "larboard" leg, and each story is more outrageous and hilarious than the last. And here's a verse from a traditional sea shanty: One more pull and that'll do, For we're the lads to kick 'er through! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Songs About Feet From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 Feb 07 - 09:13 AM I seem to recall Pearl Bailey singing a song on the old Ed Sullivan show about how much her feet hurt. She'd sit on a stool while she sang it, rub her feet, and wince with pain, giving the impression that her feet really did hurt. (In other words, she was acting as well as singing.) It must have really impressed me as a child to make me remember it after all these years. But I can't remember the title, or any of the words! I've looked at a list of songs that Pearl Bailey recorded at Allmusic.com, but nothing rings a bell. Does anyone else remember this? |

I got these words from this website: http://www.hymnsite.com/fws/hymn.cgi?2208 Warning- this website plays a midi sound clip {over and over and over again}. The sound clip is very near to how I remember singing it. However, it sounds like there is another note in the line "Guide my feet". Maybe the person playing that piano is elongating the word feet, or he or she added another word such as "Guide my feet, Lord". Refrain: Lord, lift me up and let me stand By faith on heaven's table-land, A higher plane than I have found: Lord, plant my feet on higher ground Verse 2 My heart has no desire to stay Where doubts arise and fears dismay; Though some may dwell where these abound, My prayer, my aim is higher ground. Verse 3 I want to live above the world, Though Satan's darts at me are hurled; For faith has caught the joyful sound, The song of saints on higher ground. Verse 4 I want to scale the utmost height And catch a gleam of glory bright; But still I'll pray, 'til heaven I've found "Lord, lead me on to higher ground." http://ingeb.org/spiritua/impressi.html ** Here's a link to a YouTube video clip of another song called "Higher Ground" Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground 1995 BBC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEiuLu59HXo&mode=related&search= ** And here's the lyrics to that song: HIGHER GROUND {Stevie Wonder} People keep on learnin Soldiers keep on warrin World keep on turnin Cause it wont be too long Powers keep on lyin While your people keep on dyin World keep on turnin Cause it wont be too long Im so darn glad he let me try it again Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin Im so glad that I know more than I knew then Gonna keep on tryin Till I reach the highest ground Teachers keep on teachin Preachers keep on preachin World keep on turnin Cause it wont be too long Oh no Lovers keep on lovin Believers keep on believin Sleepers just stop sleepin Cause it wont be too long Oh no Im so glad that he let me try it again Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin Im so glad that I know more than I knew then Gonna keep on tryin Till I reach my highest ground...whew! Subject: Lyr Add: COLD FEET (Tracy Chapman) From: lennice Date: 02 Mar 07 - 07:31 PM tracy chapman - "cold feet" there was a little boy once upon a time ...make a wish for better days, the end of hard times. for no more cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet. His clothes were always clean... But when winter days arrived there was never money enough to shod his cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet ...he made a life for himself, free from worldly wants or needs But with nobody to share the life he'd made No body to keep him warm at night When he'd go to sleep he'd sleep alone with his cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet One night he walked the street... Searching for a shooting star a benevolent God.. He turned and found love He then wished for the courage to ask this stranger Who she was to not have cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet He thought she'd ...want the finer things So he promised more than he could buy And he promised her the sun and moon to not have cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet ...He can't give her what she needs He wants to give her what he thinks she wants Her sad-eyed face, his empty pockets drive him on and his cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet He'd struggled all his life to be an honest man ...But some guys he knew from high school days Said they had a plan to get rich quick and they could count him in if he don't have cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet He thought about their offer accepted it without qualms Dreamt about the life he'd buy The comfort that would come without cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet ...He said the little boy is dead, a man stands with you now without cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet Without cold feet, cold cold cold cold feet ... he thougt he'd set his clock right, he thought he'd read his watch he left in such a hurry he didn't think to wish for luck. Makes no difference if you're early, No difference if you're late when you're out of time, The flowers have been laid You're six feet underground With cold feet, Cold cold cold cold feet |

My picture's in your locket on that golden chain Money's in your pocket and you're gone again Gypsy lips will promise vows that they never keep Hearts like mine are crumbled beneath your gypsy feet. ch: Gypsy feet keep dancing to the tune of violins Just like devil's prancing you dance away your sins If I could tame your restless heart would make my life complete But I can't put an anchor on your gypsy feet. |
