Subject: A reason to watch the Tonight Show From: GUEST,CupOfTea, no cookies Date: 19 May 09 - 05:18 PM I just heard from a reliable source, who got it from Jackie herself that this Thursday, May 21, on Dave Letterman, Jacqueline Schwab will be playing piano backup for Jean Redpath! How cool is that? One song only - don't blink was part of the message, but this combination is worth wading through a show I haven't watched for decades, to see superb performers I haven't seen live for years. Perhaps some briliant soul will YouTube it for those who didn't find out in time! Cheers! Joanne in Cleveland |
Subject: RE: A reason to watch the Tonight Show From: catspaw49 Date: 19 May 09 - 05:32 PM Jackie Schwab has the finest touch on piano of almost anyone I have ever heard. Many fine pianists lack that one small part of technique which separates the greats from the "damn goods." Spaw |

Subject: RE: A reason to watch the Tonight Show From: GUEST,CupOfTea, no cookies Date: 19 May 09 - 05:35 PM And that Jean Redpath, she can sing a bit. J |
Subject: RE: A reason to watch the Tonight Show From: gnu Date: 19 May 09 - 05:53 PM Yup. A wee tad. |
Subject: RE: A reason to watch the Tonight Show From: Artful Codger Date: 19 May 09 - 06:56 PM I assume this is the same Jacqueline Schwab who provided wonderful piano renditions for many of Ken Burns' documentaries. A talent, indeed. |
Subject: RE: A reason to watch the Tonight Show From: katlaughing Date: 19 May 09 - 07:25 PM OH wow! I have loved Jean REdpath and her music for years. She even answered an email from me, years ago. Lovely, lovely woman. I hope I can stay awake to see this. Thanks1 |
Subject: RE: A reason to watch the Tonight Show From: catspaw49 Date: 19 May 09 - 07:46 PM AC....Yes, the same. Jay and Molly used to perform here at a "Spoleto-like" festival every summer and I had the privilege of listening to them in an old and restored country church. A beautiful grand had been brought in and in that small venue Jacqueline Scwab's ability and her wondrous touch was even more accentuated and beautiful than on any recording or Burns special. I loved all those and I love Ungar and Mason but listenning to Jackie Scwab was far and away the highlight. There are times when her touch is so light that you aren't sure whether you heard the notes from the piano or that she magically wished them into the air. Yes people.....SHE IS THAT GOOD! If you have never heard this woman play, be sure you catch the show...hell, tape it or whatever.....Don't miss it. Spaw |
Subject: RE: A reason to watch the Tonight Show-Schwab/Redpath From: Mary Katherine Date: 19 May 09 - 08:55 PM Are you sure it's the Tonight Show? The same message from Jackie was posted on another list, but that one said it was the Late Show With David Letterman, which is a different program and on a different network than the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Can someone confirm which? |
Subject: RE: A reason to watch the Tonight Show-Schwab/Redp From: Anglo Date: 19 May 09 - 09:38 PM You just beat me to it, Mary Katherine. I am on Jacqueline's mailing list, and I got the message direct. She-they will be on the DAVID LETTERMAN show, not Leno. Maybe a Mudelf could change the heading, in case people don't read this far down? |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: katlaughing Date: 19 May 09 - 10:44 PM I hear what you mean about her playing, Spaw: Battle Cry of Freedom as done by Schwab. |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: katlaughing Date: 19 May 09 - 11:12 PM I don't suppose Jean will choose to do this spoken piece, but it would be neat as she does it with piano: Retirement. Scroll down a bit for Jean's email about the piece and the text. |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redp From: GUEST,Donal Date: 20 May 09 - 01:12 AM Jean Redpath's 'The Songs of Lady Nairne' is available on CD now - it was only on tape before - I can thoroughly recommend it. |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: Murray MacLeod Date: 20 May 09 - 09:26 AM so, Spaw, if Jackie (I can call her Jackie, I've played on the same stage with her) and Emmylou did a concert together, do you think your old heart could stand it ??? |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: Mark Ross Date: 20 May 09 - 10:36 AM I just went to the Letterman web site and I couldn't find the broadcast archived. Is it going to be on YouTube? Mark Ross |

Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: PoppaGator Date: 20 May 09 - 12:42 PM For those of you unfamiliar with the format of The Late Show with Dave Letterman, the "musical guest" invariably appears LAST, for the final 4 minutes or so of the program ~ and preceded by an extra-long commercial break. I'm sure some of you anxious to see/hear this performance are unaccustomed to such late hours; take an afternoon nap or drink some coffee or something... |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 20 May 09 - 04:26 PM No tv, so I'm holding out for Youtube, too! Jackie is indeed a wonderful soul- I took a week-long workshop with her last summer and hope someday to take some piano lessons from her. She sparkles in person as much as she does at the keyboard! |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redp From: GUEST,CupOfTea, no cookies Date: 20 May 09 - 05:32 PM Ohhhhh! thanks to the MudElf who fixed the subject heading to correct my mistake!! I love it when reality triumphs. I had been picturing Leno channeling his Scottish grannie and trying to do that accent back at Jean Redpath, though. Darn, that would have been funny. David Letterman is a bit snide for my taste. (but of course I'm going to watch it!) I've had the pleasure of the company and music of both these ladies. I can't say enough what a fantastic musician and dancer Jacqueline is, while being one of the all time wonderful people in the universe. A Bare Necessities English Country Dance is a transcendental experience - the music carries you to just where you need to be in the dance, driven by Jacqueline's piano. I had the pleasure of presenting Jean Redpath in her only Cleveland appearance, 14 years ago - I know well the time because I've a vivid picture of her dandling my then un-named very wee sheltie puppy on her lap while I was taking name suggestions. (He was Runyard Barking Kipling, the world's smallest good looking sheltie, until his demise last month) I saved her suggestion for if I ever get another girl dog it would suit. Her knowledge and sly sense of humor on top of such a grand voice make for an amazing concert experience. It's frustrating to know that there won't be more than one song from this duo tomorrow. What a WONDERFUL tour that would be though... Joanne in Cleveland |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redp From: Ross Campbell Date: 20 May 09 - 11:14 PM I'll also be awaiting a YouTube clip. The Letterman show used to be relayed here in the UK. At the moment, only John Stewart and Jay Leno have Freeview presence - don't know about Sky coverage. First saw Jean Redpath around 1969. The Humblebums (then just Billy Connolly and Tam Harvey)who had been making a name for themselves in pubs and clubs around Glasgow, had their first major concert in the City Hall, Candleriggs. Billed as "The Humblebums and Friends", the "Friends" turned out to be a gallery of the best of the Scottish folk scene of the time. Singing solo and unaccompanied, Jean Redpath's clear, almost operatic voice immediately silenced and then thrilled the audience, who were there to hear something very different. The only other time I saw her was at Blackpool Folk Club at the Raikes Hotel, maybe ten years later. Since then I've had to rely on the occasional accidental record find (mostly American issues, so not exactly thick on the ground over here). Ross |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: artbrooks Date: 20 May 09 - 11:31 PM We got the same message, and are looking forward to it. She says, in part: Some exciting news—this Thursday, May 21, I'm scheduled to accompany renowned and stirring Scottish singer Jean Redpath on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman!" Jean will perform one song only (so don't blink), and I don't know if I'll be on-camera or even mentioned by name, but I'll be there accompanying her on piano. I'd love for any of you night owls to tune in! Jean's CBS offer came about after she recently sang a poignant John Stewart song about love, on "A Prairie Home Companion." |

Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: ClaireBear Date: 21 May 09 - 11:43 AM I thought, for a moment, that I was imagining things last night when David Letterman announced this coming treat. One's mind can play tricks at 1:00am... When I realized I hadn't misheard, Tivo was promptly set to record the event. Now I don't even have to stay up! But I might anyway ... I can't wait either. C |

Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: open mike Date: 21 May 09 - 04:34 PM i would be interested in hearing Jean Redpath and Jean Ritchie together. |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: Bill D Date: 21 May 09 - 04:59 PM really? I have heard them both separately, and they don't do stuff that's too similar. (Redpath is very flexible, but still...) I've collected both Jean Ritchie & Jean Redpath stuff for 40 years... I will sure stay up late to 'see' Redpath once more.) |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: Richard Bridge Date: 21 May 09 - 05:08 PM I look forward to a link to the Youboob |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redp From: Anglo Date: 22 May 09 - 02:23 AM It was very nice. David gave Jean a nice intro, the camera work was good, Jacqui was also covered by the cameras, particularly on the solos of course, and the whole thing went off very well. |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: Barry Finn Date: 22 May 09 - 02:45 AM I fully agree John. Jean was in great voice, isn't she always, & Jacqueline's paino accompanyment was spot on too. I only wish that Dave had them do more than just close the show with that one song Barry |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redp From: Anglo Date: 22 May 09 - 03:24 AM Barry, that's the format. That is what they do. They could have a complete reunion of the Beatles and that is what they would do. |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: open mike Date: 22 May 09 - 03:20 PM THE SONG WAS: Some Kind Of Love, it is by BY John Stewart. http://spikesmusic.spike-jamie.com/serendipity/02b/SOME-KIND-OF-LOVE.pdf I recall it being done by Kate Wolf. This was a refreshing song to hear. (often the bands that are on the show are loud and flashy) Both Jean and Dave thanked Jackie. |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: robomatic Date: 22 May 09 - 03:50 PM David Letterman and his band have been supporting/ popularizing some of the better and somewhat lesser-known musicians for many years. Warren Zevon and Tori Amos come to mind. |
Subject: RE: reason to watch the Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath From: maire-aine Date: 22 May 09 - 04:59 PM I turned to Letterman just as Jean was beginning to sing, so I missed the intro. Didn't have enough time to tape it, but it was beautiful. Maryanne |

Subject: RE: Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath - youtube avail now From: Joe Offer Date: 23 May 09 - 04:35 AM John Stewart had a way with songs. His Some Kind of Love (click for lyrics at Mudcat) was a good one for Jean Redpath to sing. TRUBRIT, the Pony Express should get the video to Maine sometime next week. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath - youtube avail now From: Duke Date: 23 May 09 - 10:43 AM That takes me back to the sixties when Jean played at the Village Corner Club in Toronto. She was quite the lady and quite the singer. Not a bad dancer either! |
Subject: RE: Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath - youtube avail now From: catspaw49 Date: 23 May 09 - 08:29 PM Yes...Jean Redpath is great....beautiful job, etc. But Jackie Schwab is friggin' spectacular! She could make Yoko Ono sound good.....well maybe at least sorta' half-assed awful which is way up from where she really is. I swear to whatever god you wish that there are notes that just seem to be thoughts rather than sounds. It is truly as fine a touch on a piano as I have ever heard or ever expect to hear. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath - youtube avail now From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 23 May 09 - 08:39 PM Amen, Spaw- once again, you said it! Jackie has the sweetest, surest touch as anyone I've heard. |
Subject: RE: Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath - youtube avail now From: katlaughing Date: 24 May 09 - 12:08 AM Humph...I guess I am spoiled...I am sure she is all those things ya'll say, but I wasn't that impressed with her piano playing last night. It may just be a personal thing as I don't like that kind of dramatic lifting up of the hands etc. when one plays the piano, but it was also the sound. BECAUSE I respect you all, though, I am going to go see if I can find more of her on youtube and give her another listen.:-) No offence! |
Subject: RE: Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath - youtube avail now From: katlaughing Date: 24 May 09 - 12:12 AM Only one of Jacqueline Schwab on youtube, the one I linked to previously, which I really like, so maybe it just was the visual thing. I'll try listening without video to the Letterman link. |
Subject: RE: Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath - youtube avail now From: catspaw49 Date: 24 May 09 - 12:54 AM LOL......Nobody is forcing you to like here but obviously you lack the taste that Allison and I have.................... Spaw |

Subject: RE: Letterman Show-Schwab/Redpath - youtube avail now From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 24 May 09 - 06:47 AM Darlin' Kat, (and anyone else who is interested), take your eyes off her hands, go to itunes or your mp3 source of choice, and search for the English Country Dance group, Bare Necessities . Listen to how the piano interacts with the other instruments, sometimes in the foreground, sometimes giving subtle support, but always lovely, unique, skilled, and wonderful. It helps that Jackie's personality fits those adjectives, too! Allison |
