I know it is a wide topic, but what is your favorite Maritime tune?
Shanty or forbitter, Sloop John B. or Edmund Fitzgerald.

Rant & Roar, Leave Her Johnny are a couple of my favorites. Rant & Roar because of it's many different versions and place names. Leave her for it's melencholy sense or resignation, a sailor has no real choice and must go back to the sea.

So what song typifies the genre for you?

Farewell to Nova Scotia does stand out for me as well, on of the more "musical" of the tunes mentioned (that I am familure with) in fact it was on my honeymoon two years ago in Nova Scotia & PEI (In fact today is my anniversary, and took the week off, that is why I am fooling around on the computer this am) that I first heard a variety of Maritime music, the kind you will never hear on a radio station that claims to be "The Home of Rock,n Roll" or even the best mix! (Sorry Beach Boys & Gordon Lightfoot) It was there I first bought a Great Big Sea CD, that lead me into Stan Rogers, A.LLoyd & E McColl (sp?) and Stan Hugil etc.

Now Stan Hugil SOunds (sounded) like a real sailor, that is to say not all that musical! But I love the tunes. Lloyd & McColl also soun like they may have had day jobs! The quality of the material though is
great.

Now Stan ROgers is a bit of a different case, he had a great voice and knew his music. I am glad he did as much maritime as he did, he could have stuck with all folk or even country and still been a performer of merit.

Now Great Big Sea I cant say enough about. The do play some pop tunes but the roots are salty as can be. They also put on such a great show. I encourage anyone to check them out!

This has been a bit long winded but one more thing....
Seems like Grey Funnle Line got the most mentions of tunes I had never heard of, so that is the first on I'll track down!

My all around favorite nautical tune has to be "The Sailor's Hornpipe" but I'd be "hard pressed" to come up with a favorite song. I fall in love with them one by one. Some are old traditional ones such as "Whiskey Johnny." Others are newly arranged for music such as the C. Fox Smith sea poem "Outward Bound."

The question for me is really which one is "best" for the occasion, where I happen to be singing or listening.

THE best? Vaughan Williams's orchestral setting of "The Holy Ground Once More."

Otherwise, there are too many to choose from! "Banks of Newfoundland" springs to mind.

Although not the best or favourite maritime tune. Here is a song I have never seen mentioned and was composed and came from Nova Scotia. For me the best, the saltiest, the most carefree and redolent of the spirit of the English sailor is 'Portsmouth.' So simple, but I get goose-bumps every time.
