Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: foggers Date: 10 Sep 11 - 06:39 PM Mansfield Brown Cow folk club meets every Tues- there was an unexpected closure of the pub but it then re-opened. The club has a facebook page for the most up to date info on venue and what is on. It is truly one of the best folk clubs in the country - great welcome, always worth a visit. |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: Big Al Whittle Date: 10 Sep 11 - 10:06 PM there used to be a folk club at the Cricket Club every Friday night, I think. don't know if its still there. Look up sairz ingram on facebook - she had a folk club in the vale of belvoir which is less than ten miles away from Newark. If you find the A52 it goes to Nottingham and derby which contain all kinds of open mics and sessions, and of course folk clubs. |

Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: GUEST,GuestSG Date: 12 Sep 11 - 10:55 AM Its worth the drive over to Nottingham on Wednesday to the Carrington Triangle Folk Club at The Gladstone on Loscoe Road in Carrington. As well as the music, the beer is EXCELLENT - try the Nottingham E.P.A. and the club serves Grenville's (free) Veg. Curry during the break - a treat in itself ! Also, in case you are looking for something nearer on Friday, Bingham FC is just down the A46 from Newark, where they meet in The Town Pavilion; just "Google" "Bingham Folk Club" and take a look. |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: Leadfingers Date: 16 Sep 11 - 08:55 PM Thanks GUEST,GuestSG , but I decided to have a lazy night on Wednesday , and was in Mudchat most of the evening ! I was made very welcome at all the clubs I got to and would reccomend them to any one Newark way . I MUST try Bingham next time I am up this way , though Lincoln WAS a good evening - AND Petrol on the way in was 3p a litre less than in Newark ! |

Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: jacqui.c Date: 03 Dec 12 - 12:30 PM Just checking this thread - I'll be in the UK from December 6, probably in Newark from the 12th. It looks as if there are a few clubs not too far from Newark and I'll be trying to get a few late passes from my daughter-who-has-become-my-mother for the two weeks I'll be there! |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: GUEST,Oh Dear Date: 04 Dec 12 - 04:39 AM I was born in Newark Notts - but raised in North London since the age of two. And I'm thankful for that! |

Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: GUEST,Backwoodsman sans Cookie Date: 04 Dec 12 - 06:03 AM Jacqui, will you be checking in on here while you're in the UK? I sometimes go to Dumbles in Southwell (they meet every Thursday, sing around format). If I go there while you're up in Newark, I could let you know by PM. You know about Gainsborough FC, it's on Friday 14th Dec. Lincoln FC (at the Unison Club, Beaumont Fee) is on Frridays 7th and 21st Dec. |

Backwoodsman - I'll let you know what late passes I'm allowed in Newark. :0) Hopefully I can make it to a few venues. OldNic - Wish I could make it to your singaround but I'll still be in London then. However, I do make it to Newark a couple of times a year and would love to get to this another time if I'm there at the right time. Terry - see my PM. |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: jacqui.c Date: 13 Dec 12 - 06:30 AM OK - I got to Newark yesterday and am staying home tonight. Weather permitting I'm hoping to get to Gainsborough tomorrow night and then have family committments over the weekend. Out, probably, next Wednesday and then heading to Hertford with a friend overnight on Thursday next - not sure my 'mother', or my grandson, will be happy if I spend too many more evenings out but we'll see....... |

Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: GUEST,Backwoodsman sans Cookie Date: 15 Dec 12 - 04:06 AM Yep, +1 on what Sue said. Great songs, especially 'Gaudy Tree'! Still laughing! |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: jacqui.c Date: 16 Dec 12 - 07:10 AM I had a great time at Gainsborough on Friday - they are always such a welcoming crowd and there are some terrific performers there. I am very lucky to have been able to hit a number of folk clubs in different parts of the UK and the USA and generally find the locals to be welcoming and generous to strangers turning up wanting to sing. Many thanks to all those who have made me so welcome over the past few years. |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: kendall Date: 16 Dec 12 - 08:24 AM I've met many people in the UK and quite a few in the Newark area. They have treated me like a relative, not a scab in the whole bunch. When you call someone a nasty name you are saying far more about you than them. |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 16 Dec 12 - 08:51 AM I think its just a joke Kendall. Notts miners didn't support their union in the great strike of 1983. Thus helping Margaret Thatcher to another umpteen years of victory. The strike was politically motivated - an attempt to unseat the Tories at a time when Labour was too weak to do it democratically. Quite a few of the Notts miners were not scabs, and damn few miners find their way into the rather sedate company of Newark and Bingham folk clubs. Glad you think and speak well of us, Kendall - we appreciate it. |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: kendall Date: 16 Dec 12 - 11:28 AM I think I'd better stay away from UK politics! :-) |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 16 Dec 12 - 12:39 PM Sorry to upset anyone. Know how you feel Kendall! |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: The Sandman Date: 16 Dec 12 - 02:02 PM no. nutty, if you do not like the truth, then that is your problem, you go away, hide your head in the sand if you like, but everything that i have put up here is fact. and, dont let anyone forget the miners who were killed in the dispute. |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: Leadfingers Date: 16 Dec 12 - 02:02 PM Political Diatribes aside , it looks as though I may well be in Newark overnight Sunday the 23rd - Any Folkie stuff on Sunday ? Carols ? Singarounds ? |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 16 Dec 12 - 02:51 PM The other side started it - they invaded Poland. Some Anon Guest Claus 4 man - stirring the shit. Me and Dick are the injured parties. Here is a page that may help out with Sunday night - worksop isn't too far - neither are wextbridgeford or beeston - both suburbs of Nottingham City. The Musician on Clyde Street Leicester is about 49 minutes down a46 - given a clear run and they often have good stuff on. http://www.folkandroots.co.uk/Venues_East_Midlands.html |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 16 Dec 12 - 02:52 PM Always phone up first to check its still on. |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: jacqui.c Date: 16 Dec 12 - 03:34 PM this is why I am so seldom on Mudcat these days. I get so tired of these sad souls who seem to have nothing to do than to stir up trouble. They may think they are being clever but I don't and it pisses me off when a thread like this gets hijacked by those with a political agenda. Just go away and be miserable somewhere else and leave decent human beings to be able to communicate with each other without this sort of nonsense. OK, vent over. Terry, if you do decide to go out next week - any chance of a lift if I can get a late pass? Tidied up a bit for you, lassie! Have a great visit! --mudelf |
Subject: RE: Newark Notts UK From: kendall Date: 16 Dec 12 - 04:29 PM Well said, Tex. Now I'm going off and have a shot of Abelour and a couple of Lobsters. |
