It's that time of year again. http://www.texasscottishfestival.com/

I'm really planning to make it this year. Honest. And it shouldn't be nearly so hot as other years (which is why I have a better chance of attending!)

Jed Marum will be there--his photo is in the middle near the top of the music page. He's performing in the Glenfinnan Tent on Friday and Saturday and in the Glenuig Tent on Sunday. (Have you left yourself time to compete in the caber toss, Jed?)

I am doing a workshop too ... on the migration of Celtic music in the US. I haven't seen the times yet ...

Also, I'll be joined in my shows by my son Jaime on manod and octave mando - and Jeff Moore for a few songs and Hugh Morrison also for a fe songs (Moore on guitar, Morrison on accordion).

Rain may be better then the usual heat!

Celtic Music was the festival organizers term, not mine. For the purposes on my discussion, we'll look at music from Ireland and Scotland that became part of American folk music and lore.

Why not English folk music? That surely has had as much an influence as Scots and Irish folk music, espeically as it is all part of a common heritage.

The weather forecast for the three days isn't too bad.

Friday, high 86, low 69. Isolated thunder storms.

Saturday, high 86, low 69. Isolated thunder storms.

Sunday, high 87, low 68. Thunder storms.

Most of the years that I didn't go were because the high was going to be 100 or higher. This sounds positively balmy!

(If Penguin shows up to Egg anyone on, we'll hand him a metal umbrella handle in a lightning storm. That'll teach him!)

Because it doesn't have anything to do with why this thread was started and what the rest of us want to talk about. Go find a germane thread or start your own if you want to argue with people about your question. We are discussing getting together in a North Texas city for the weekend to enjoy each other's company and music.

I'd like to go over to the activities tonight, but this has been a long week. Have a good evening, Jed and all, and stay dry!

I'm there now, on campus in the library, but I have to go home and mow the lawn tonight so I can go play tomorrow! It's awfully tempting to swing by to say hello, but I don't want to pay $15 just to visit for a couple of minutes. It'll take about 3 hours to do the entire yard (it's large, and it's slow when it is this tall and gooshy). See you tomorrow, and hope it is as pretty as it is right now.

Just a wee thought here - yes, there is a lot of talent at the Texas Scottish Festival but if you plan to go the weekend and don't include Smithfield Fair in your itinerary - just stay home and cut the lawn.

You should have spelled it out, Texas Guest, what that is. Also, are you in the area and are you going to be at either one?

Had a heckuva gully-washer pour down last night. (Means I don't have to go sweep up the grass clippings!) I hope the tents stood through it. I'm headed out the door in a minute, and will presume that the weather gods got it out of their system for the next 48 hours.

Headed out the door! I'll take a Mudcat shirt along with me.

SRS - I'm not sure I understand, "spell it out," in your comment; and,
I guess I'm writing this after you've left to attend the festival, so...   Smithfield Fair is a Scottish vocal/instrumental band and I hope you had an opportunity to hear them - they are wonderful.

As for me, well, I am in the area but will not be able to make it out to the festival this year - the break in the weather will allow for necessary yard work to get done. I will, however, get to see/hear Smithfield Fair at a couple of festivals later this year. I hope you
enjoy the weekend and the festival. Cheers.

Okay--I thought you were recommending an additional event to do in the area but perhaps assumed we all knew what/where it was. I didn't know the name of the group.

I'm back home after a long day, a funeral in the morning, then the festival all afternoon. We left a little after 5 (sorry I missed you Uncle Phil. Will you be there tomorrow?) The temperatures may be cooler this year, but if anyone ever wanted a prime location to do any Irish bog reenactments, this would be the venue! The humidity is high and the smell of the rotting vegetation is pretty strong. You walk carefully through all of the muddy passages between tents, looking out for the standing water, and when you sit down you do it slowly, in case the chair decides to keep sinking backward. Jed was in a great location, the first tent, but unfortunately it's also at the lowest elevation and poor drainage. Five or six hours this afternoon was enough for today. I did get to hear Jed--he had a great routine going with a fiddler friend (Brian McNeil?) who he called up to stage several times to accompany "songs you don't know." Very talented, all of you!

There's a possibility of getting over there for a while on Sunday afternoon. I see Jed is performing at 4 and Smithfield Fair performing at 5. My son has to be there at UTA at 6 to begin a week of a residential camp, so maybe we'll head out a little early.

Yes, thank you. And I did see you yesterday.

Anyone who tries to spend time in that soggy lowland area today will be found several centuries in the future to be perfectly preserved in the bog that was created by this year's rain. The maggots will have died and dropped off before they do substantial damage to the carcasses and all of the plaids and any brass ornaments will be bright in the future sunshine over the excavation. The gasses generated by the composting biomass today will hasten both death and the sublimation into the soil.

If they'd let me in free with my teenage son for the last couple of hours, I might think about it. I'm not sure who to ask, and I don't want to drive over to have them say no. But I'll think about it.

Didn't make it over in time to try to wheedle my way in at the end. (We were lucky that I had time to wash and mostly dry my son's jeans between picking him up after his weekend Anime convention and dropping him off for that residential camp at 6pm.)

I hope all went well and that there were no mud-related casualties.

Maggie - so nice to meet me, again at TSF. I am sorry to have to dash. I always feel like I'm being rude when I do that, but it seems I'm always moving on or off stage, or rushing off to the next one. It's fun working these festivals, but there is a cost to "social time!"

The early morning Sunday storms dropped a ton of rain, and made some mud and raised havoc with a few vendor operations, but everything was back in order and drying by the time the gates opened up! It was a grand day, and we had moderate, but pretty good crowds on Sunday. Friday and Saturday crowds were very good.

I love this festival because of the playing time. I spent hours on stage with my friends, at my sets and at theirs. What a treat that is!

My voice is shot today, but it was worth it.

Oh - a few folks asked over the weekend; Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas have become regulars at this event, but did not make it this year. Alasdair had a special event with his son and could not make it. I expect he'll be back next year.

Another highlight this weekend, to my mind was Clandestine. They have reformed and begun life in a new lineup. They sounded great and put on some fine shows.

Texas Scottish Festival Snapshots

Here are some snapshots from the soggy festival. Note Jed Marum's immaculately clean shoes and white socks in a photo on the bottom row. I can think of no rational explanation for this, and have to assume that supernatural powers are involved.

It was a great weekend, but, man, was it tough rolling out of bed to go to work this morning.
- Phil

I got home without a program, so any help putting names with the faces in the photos would be appreciated. Some I know, some I don't.

The picture of Jerrod is with the North Texas Caledonian Pipe Band. He was fronting their performances in addition to performing with Seamus Stout.

Thanks for labeling those. I have a couple of shots from when Jed was performing. I'll Photoshop them to web size and park them somewhere.

Phil, you notice he didn't reveal his secret for staying clean while everyone else slithered around trying to avoid leaving ignominious splotts in the mud. A new Monty Python flick may be in the works: The Life of Jed will reveal how he transcends the goo mere mortals struggle against. Will the answer be an intertextual towel, the number 42, a dead parrot, or coconut shells? Tune in to find out . . .

I guess I stayed reasonably mud free because I never strayed too far from stages. They were higher and drier.

I left a soaking wet quilt behind, though! I had used it beneath my CD and Tee shirt display and forgot it overnight ... next day someone had draped it over the fence for me, and I forgot it second time!

I hope it finds a good home!

Size? I guess just a full size quilt. I doubt there was more then one. It was a store bought, machine sewn quilt. Pattern on one side, white on the other. If they have it, it may be dirty from getting dropped in the mud, but was clean before that ... probably isn't too bad.

If it's already found a good home, so be it - but it's waiting inthe lost and found, I'd be glad to come get it.

So - yes, please ask for me, and thanks!

Nice day today! Clear, a breeze, it hasn't rained in three days or so--this is the weather we wished for last weekend!

Pardon me, I have to go mow my lawn--it's going to be growing fast for a while even after all of the rain stops.

If you're in the region, take the train and arrange to stay with someone. And there are modestly priced hotels in the area (including a few "no tell motels" up on the old highway through town). :)
