Can y'all help me out? I've been put in charge of coming up with reasonably-clean, easy-to-sing-along-with, preferrably-in-English drinking songs for an Octoberfest.

Thanks!

One for the Morning Glory

One for the morning glory
Two for the early dew,
Three for the man who will stand his round
And four for the love of you, my girl,
Four for the love of you.)

That's the chorus above.
Can find the verses ( and chords) if anyone wants it.

Verse 1 goes:
At the end of the day, I like a little drink, to raise up my voice and sing,
And an hour or two of a fine brown brew, And I'm ready for anything.

A catchy tongue-in-cheek type song.

Anne

The "As Usual" you mean is on "Ballads of Booze" by Hamish Imlach.
I can remember a bit more:
I supped a drink up like a Hoover,
As usual,
VP wine and paint remover,
As usual,
Somewhere deep inside my brain,
I seem to hear a Diesel train,
So I promise not to drink again,
As usual.

I used to play in a band which sometimes did barn dances for the Mormons. At one of these, our caller, who is actually a teetotaller, sang Whisky on a Sunday in the interval. For some reason they haven't asked us to play for them since!

Don't forget "The man who waters the workers' beer".

I'm glad somebody started this thread, because my folk club is having a workshop night early in October, called "Work is the curse of the drinking classes" so it gives me more ideas. I hope my friends Ricarda and Nick from Wayward will be there so Ricarda can sing her French drinking song "Tourdion" here and here.

She also sings a verse in English, adapted a bit so that it scans:

When I drink a good red wine
Everything turns turns turns turns around
Come my friends and pour it in, pour it in.
When I drink a good red wine
Everything turns turns turns turns around
Come my friends and pour it in, pour it in.

Sing and drink - let us set about this bottle,
Sing and drink, come on pour it in.
Sing and drink - let us set about this bottle,
Sing and drink, come on pour it in.

Couple of others - Cells by Rudyard Kipling (haven't Kippled in a while), and has anyone mentioned The Parting Glass yet?

There might also be some ideas on this previous thread Wanted: Songs for alcoholics! , as well as some links to related threads at the top of it.

And of course there's this one - Martin Pearson did it the other night - I hope we have it at my folk club - it's a lot of fun:

THE WINE SONG

by Grant Baynham

There are those who like their wine
Because it adds sophistication
To that hearty meal they're serving to their friends.
And there are those who like their wine
Because it helps in the creation
Of that party feel on which so much depends.
And there are those who'd like their wine
To come from eastward-facing chateaux
On the plateaux of Lorraine and all that bunk
But their motives are not mine
And I like lots and lots of wine
And I like it 'cos it makes me drunk.

There are those who take a glass
Because it helps them to relax
They find it helps their social manner to improve
Well, that's a jolly useful scheme
Which I have taken to its logical extreme:
I sometimes get so well-relaxed I can't move
And there's another kind of fellow
Drinks champagne to make him mellow
And he swears by Cliquot, Bollinger and Brut
Well, I tried some Brut meself
I found it on the bathroom shelf
And he was right: it got me mellow as a newt.

You can judge your wine by the quality of the vine,
Its colour and bouquet and all that junk.
But it all comes back to the falling over factor
And the fact that it gets you drunk.

There are those who like to think
That it's important what you drink
They haven't got an inkling what it's all about
They spend their evenings wasting
Decent drinking time by tasting
Drops of this and that, then spitting it all out.
They pass along the tables
Strewth, they even read the labels
Muttering things like, "What a shame
The cork has shrunk"
Or "fruity nose" or "too much tannin"
When they ought to get a man in
Who appreciates the chance to get drunk.

They waste their time describing
What they ought to be imbibing
Which is wine of course, although you'd never think it.
'Cos they use words like "young but promising, "
"Precocious," "full of fun";
You'd think they were going to adopt the stuff
Not drink it.
And at a meal these silly asses
Have a row of empty glasses
A different wine with every dish they eat.
Me, I mix whatever's handy
In a stiff, all-purpose shandy
Which goes very nice with fish or Shredded Wheat.

You can judge your wine by the quality of the vine
Its colour and bouquet and all that junk
But it all comes back to the falling over factor
And the fact that it gets you drunk

And there are those who take delight
Pronouncing all the labels right
They roll their r's and do those German glottals.
Me, I couldn't give a monkey's
'Cos the stuff for getting drunk is
On the inside not the outside of the bottles
So if you have a cheese and wine
Invite your friendly Philistine
Call me drunkard, call me sot
Or call me wino. What do I know?
You'll find me in the kitchen
I'll be giggerlin' and twitchin'
Having a sup and throwing up
Across your lino

You can judge your wine by the quality of the vine
Its colour and bouquet, if you insist.
But it all comes back to the falling over factor
And the fact that it gets you
Misty-eyed and mellow, gets you
Maudlin, mawkish, miserable and PISSED!

What, no one has suggested "Dead Dog Scrumpy" also known as "Dead Dog Cider"?
It was originally composed by Trevor Crozier, with a chorus added later by Charlie Ipcar:

Now, here's to Dead Dog Cid-er, the best there is by far;
Here's to Dead Dog Cid-er, no moaning at the bar;
You can search this wide world over, find many a beer or ale;
But, when you've tried Dead Dog Cid-er – your search will be cur-tailed!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

'Round these parts, while we do drink a bit while we sing (normally between tunes), we dont sing too much while we drink (too complex a task) - if we do it we dont usually remember doing it let alone what we sang.   We'll sing about upcoming drinking, then drink, and then sing later(usually bemoaning our condition). As such these arent really traditional "drinking songs" so much as songs about drinking
- but some have potential for good sing alongs:

Bottle of Wine (Tom Paxton)
Mountain Dew
Rye Whiskey (Drunken Hiccups/Jack of Diamonds etc)

I always kind of liked the Pig Got Up and Slowly Walked Away, but havent done it for years.

Of course in the Fifth Grade I recall singing "99 Bottle of Beer on the Wall" just to annoy my teachers.

And there are the recent country hits - Friends in Low Places and I Love this Bar

There's also this one:

PREAB SAN OL
(Traditional)

Why spend your leisure bereft of pleasure
Amassing treasures, why scrape and save
Why look so canny at ev'ry penny
You'll take no money within the grave
Landlords and gentry with all their plenty
Must still go empty where're they're bound
So to my thinking we'd best be drinking
Our glasses clinking and round and round

King Solomon's glory so famed in story
Was far outshone by the lily's guise
But hard winds harden both field and garden
Pleading for pardon, the lily dies
Life's but a bauble of toil and trouble
The feathered arrow once shot ne'er found
So lads and lasses, because life passes
Come fill your glasses for another round

The huckster greedy, he blinds the needy
There strives unheeding, shouts: 'Money down'
His special vices, his fancy prices
For a florins' value he'll charge a crown
With hump for trammel, the scripture's camel
Missed the needle's eye and so came to ground
Why pine for riches, while still you've stitches
To hold your britches up?
Another round

And this one:

Our Glens
(Buff Hardie / George Donald)

I love Scotland's glens and whatever else we lose
Please leave us our glens, our glorious glens
Our mountains are grand, Ben Lomond, Ben Nevis too
You can have all these bens, but leave us our glens
Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glendronnach, Glen Grant
Can you do without them, if you must know I can't
Put a drop in a glass of Glen Spey or Glendrottar
It's a perfectly bearable way to drink water

I'd willingly lose our culture or most of it
For instance that mess called "Full Highland dress"
With the full ethnic bit, with haggis and Hogmanay
I'd gladly dispense, but leave us our glens
Glenfarclass, Glenlochy, Glengarioch, Glenfaul
I once knew a man who had sampled them all
Glenugie, Glenkinchie, Glenisla - that's plenty
He looked sixty-five, but in fact he was twenty

Take our Highland schottiche, our marches, strathspeys and reels
Take our old Scottish waltz, but leave us our malts
Remove, if you will, our ladies' conveniences
And our gentlemens', but leave us our glens
Glenturret, Glen Scotia and last week Glen Fyne
Was rare at Communion when they ran out of wine
Glenglassough, Glenlossie, Glendullan, Glenmorangie
I prefer them to Cointreau, which I find too orangie

Oh, breathes there a Scot, whose views on priorities
When laid on the line, are different from mine
Take our jobs take our homes take anything else you will
Wife, family and friends.. but leave us our glens
Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glendronnach, Glen Grant
Can you do without them, if you must know I can't
Put a drop in a glass of Glen Spey or Glendrottar
It's a perfectly bearable way to drink water
