Subject: Lyr Add: Carry It On (Gil Turner, 1964) From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Dec 16 - 01:32 AM I've been researching all the songs in the Rise Up Singing Songbook. I've learned a lot in the process. Peter Paul and Mary had a PBS television special and a box set titled Carry It On but I don't think they ever recorded the song of that title. The song was written by Gil Turner (1933-1974), and published in 1964. It was popularized in recordings by Joan Baez and Judy Collins. Here are the lyrics from the Rise Up Singing CARRY IT ON (Gil Turner) There's a man by my side walking There's a voice inside me talking There's a word that needs a-saying Carry it on, carry it on Carry it on, carry it on They will tell their lying stories Send their dogs to bite our bodies They will lock us in their prisons Carry it on, carry it on Carry it on, carry it on All their lies be soon forgotten All their dogs are gonna lie there rotting All their prison walls will crumble Carry it on, carry it on Carry it on, carry it on If you can't go on any longer Take the hand of your sister and your brother Every victory's gonna bring another Carry it on, carry it on Carry it on, carry it on New verses by Marion Wade: For the dream never-ending You can hear the voices blending Loud and clear, their echoes sending Carry it on, carry it on (2x) Through the air the song is winging Down the years, hope keeps springing No more tears, we're still singing Carry it on, carry it on Carry it on, carry it on TRO ©1964, 1965 Melody Trails, Inc., NY NY Here's a nice recording by Ross Altman: |
