Subject: What would you like for Christmas?
From: McGrath of Harlow
Date: 06 Dec 10 - 07:06 PM

There's almost certainly been a few threads asking this, but I couldn't find any.

Anyway, I thought it might be a good way of getting ideas for what to give - or indeed what to hope to get. And maybe a way for people to drop hints.

Should this be a BS thread? Well, since I suspect some of the most interesting ideas might be related to music, not necessarily.

Very nice of you to ask!

Think I already got mine: nice digital piano, and have just had delivery of a gig bag and dust cover for it. Have asked the (grown-up) kids to buy me a better pedal than the one that came with it!
But my best present will be my first grandchild: due any day now! Already buying musical toys for him/her.

There's a Kimble F-5 mandolin on the way to me now via UPS so asking for anything else would be very selfish.

OK - I'll take an autoharp and a Collings uke please. Or a National tricone.

I'll take labour over goods any day. This year, what I'd really like is for someone to volunteer to restring my harp. I have a complete set of replacement strings -- just scared to start the restringing process for fear I might do it wrong or break some of the new strings.

A private concert with Donovan playing his music just for me "live."
(not on a record, CD or DVD but actually live in person).

Though that would be lovely, it's not gonna happen! :-(

Nice pair of black jeans would be nice.

Some folk CD's.

Lessons to learn to play the sitar. Not easy finding a teacher around here that teaches that instrument.

Another Volvo - preferably the 940 Sport Edition Estate manual.
A set of Volvo Polaris wheels.
A bloody great Landrover - a 110 v8 (er, with LPG)
A recondition for my rear projection TV.
Another set of guts for another souped up computer - AMDx4Phenom on a full ATX board with huge PSU and koshels of RAM (I'll squeeze the guts of the one I've just built into a Tiny case).

Oh, and a suitable person of gender to ... polish them (polish what?) for me.

Ocean of Sound – David Toop
Magic in Medieval Manuscripts - Sophie Page

CDs
A Lighter Touch – Robin Dransfield

"Corries Live" cd vol 1&2, a cd of Scottish & Irish sea songs, "House of Cards" dvd set (saw it so long aqo and would like to see it aqain), Bob Dylan's latest bootleg cd, and a flannel robe. Wait, I already got those for my November birthday! Chanukah has arrived and will celebrate it with family tomorrow. Who knows what it will bring. I'm grateful for everything already.

A cittern, haven't decided which maker yet though. A mellow sounding frailing banjo whose voice nonetheless has some ping in it. And a 5-octave set of English-type hand bells (by Schulmerich) preferably with a porter who can haul them around for me. Time to play them all.

Nothing physical for me, thanks.

I'd like to live in a country that claims to be in favor of world peace but ISN'T the world's largest manufacturer and exporter of weapons of war.

A president with some balls.

Equal rights for gay folks.

A law making it a crime for a politician to knowingly tell a lie.

A law making it a crime for a news person -- or anyone claiming to be such -- to knowingly tell a lie.

True separation of church and state.

Sorry, I must be in a political mood today . . .

either would be Ok but the fiddle is something I've been on the lookout for a while.

Never seen one for sale in the Uk and I'm reticent to get without trying it out.

Actually - this sounds a bit like some of the comments on the back page of my local paper in the dating section. I can understand any confussion Mike.

I'm also hoping for good enough weather next week to get to the Christmas do - mainly carols - that we do for the old people's day centre. We had to negotiate with a neighbour last week to get us and our eqipement to the barn dance. perhaps I should be asking for a 4 by 4 - but perhaps not.

Seasons wishes to all
FloraG.

I would like an autoharp app for the i-Pad. Yes, there is one.

And the i-Pad to go with it

And a(nother) real autoharp just to compare - a really nice D'Aigle Cascade single key with switch out bars would do me.

"wolfhound ladies" sounds interesting...

There are things we'd really want, which aren't to be had all too often - youth and health and people we have lost - and the consolation prizes that'd be nice to have anyway - as Bob Dylan put it:

...And yes, there's something you can send back to me
Spanish boots of Spanish leather.
