Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Mbo Date: 11 May 00 - 06:43 PM Kentucky River SideA frantic voice was screaming 'bout a terrible sight An inferno at the warehouse in the center of town And if they didn't get there fast, the whole place would burn down! When they got there flames were lightin' the sky And had swallowed up the warehouse seven stories high But what the general public had found the most disturbin' Was that the warehouse was a storage place for Wild Turkey Bourbon!! The flames were raging higher and hotter by the minute And gettin' closer to the barrels with the Bourbon in it Suddenly the firemen's ears were filled with warlike commotion Each barrel blowing up like the Siberian Explosion! Oh cruel and remorseless was that bourbon's fate To explode in a sound heard clear across the State And instead of wreaking havoc on some poor person's liver It all seeped out into the big Kentucky river! Down by the river side Down by the river side Down by the river side The tide is boiling booze Down by the river side Down by the river side Down by the river side Hey, if you snooze, you lose! The firemen put out the blaze at long last, I'm told While the river burned like liquid gold Every Mom and Dad were out in boats, with every son and daughter Tryin' to get a taste of that sweet fire water Well the mayor was afraid of a big contamination So he shut down the town's only water-treament station You couldn't even use the water to wash your dirty cars But them spigots got more workout than the local bars! Down by the river side Down by the river side Down by the river side The tide is boiling booze Down by the river side Down by the river side Down by the river side Hey, if you snooze, you lose! --Mbo |

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Dharmabum Date: 12 May 00 - 10:04 AM {Sung loosely to THE NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN] THE DAY THE RIVER TURNED TO BOOZE There is a town in Lawrenceburg, Way down in Kentucky, Where the bourbon mill caught fire, And sent the whiskey flowin free, It made it's way right through the streets, Down to the river bed, Now the old Kentucky river, Is the Wild Turkey instead. {chorus} The day the river turned to booze, And all the bells were ringin, Today the bourbon's runnin loose, And all the people are singin, Na-na na na na na-na na na na-na na na na na. Downstream there's a little Baptist church, Run by the Reverend West, And he's standin in the river, Way up to his chest, He's doin his Baptismal thing, To old Flora Clementine, When she jumps up & grabs him, Say's "Come in the water's fine", {chorus} Now Clementine's a hefty gal, And the Reverand she did take'em, Said "Let this river wash away our sins" "As fast as we can make'em", The congregation all joined in, As the river was a greetin, Now instead of goin to the church, They all joined an A.A. meetin, {chorus} Now Monday mornin's laundry day, For ol' Granny McCrey, And she does it by the river, The good old fashioned way, First she does her dresses, Then her underwear & socks, Says "It gives a whole new meanin", "To doin laundry on the rocks". {chorus} So if you're headed to the Bluegrass state, Be carefull where you're swimmin, There's a tributary way down there, That's full of wild wimmen, And the men have become heathens, No one's feelin any shame, The river's called Kentucky, But Wild Turkey's now it's name. {ch} The day the river turned to booze, And all the bells were ringin, Today the bourbon's runnin loose, And all the people are singin, Na-Na na majaladabakajatararaxazasafaxayahabaukajhnagy.

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 12 May 00 - 10:14 AM (cackles)Hehe he, 'Spaw, it's like shootin' fish in a barrel, just feed these folks an idea an' they fall right in with it and all these goodies come out. Seriously, folks, great batch of songs, sure to become part of Kentucky folklore. In 2100 'Catters will be arguing whether these are original songs or folk songs and someone will find a link to a Child ballad! RtS (not a whiskey drinker but understands your pain!) |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Áine Date: 12 May 00 - 10:26 AM Dear Roger - Thank you so much for the grand idea! Aren't these guys great? If you feel like adding a little ditty yourself, don't be shy! And Dharmabum -- Fantastic and unique, my dear! Extremely evocative in a double-entendre sort of way *BG*. Definitely ripe for development into a movie script! ;) -- Áine |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Bradypus Date: 12 May 00 - 05:33 PM Dharmabum- what a good story, and an ingenious tune to go with it. Definitely enjoyable. I was going to do a simple parody on 'Campbelltown Loch' (see this thread, and give thanks to supersearch), but I'll maybe try something a bit different. Bradypus |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Bradypus Date: 12 May 00 - 06:18 PM Bradypus sings the Blues!
I've never written a Blues before. I read the thread on'What is the Blues', and it sounded as if I wasn't qualified to attempt this feat. Mbo found the words of 'Poppa Sings the Blues' for me, so I've used that as a template. Does this come anywhere close ?

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: GUEST,Evie Date: 13 May 00 - 12:11 AM Anyone out there know the rest of this song? In 1814 we took a little trip, Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip' We took a little bacon and we took a little beans, And we fought the bloody British in the town of New Orleans. We Fired our guns but the British kept a comin' There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began a runnin' from down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 16 May 00 - 05:38 PM Oh, Our Lady of the Song Challenges: I have a POSSIBLE challenge subject, and was going to send it to you by personal message. However, all I get is your name with and Inactive label on it. Perhaps this is because I am searching without the accent over the A, which I don't know how to enter. Where do I go from here? (Oh, I know, lots of people tell me to go there, but I mean procedurally.) Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Amergin Date: 16 May 00 - 07:44 PM Wonderful songs, everyone!! Doesterr, I don't know much about how things are done around here, but I'm sure there is no specific procedure for suggestion challenges to Aine. Why don't you just go ahead and post it? Amergin |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Áine Date: 16 May 00 - 07:55 PM Dave - Don't post it here!! Everyone will know in advance and I've got a couple of other folks' challenges to do first. As for sending me a personal message, just copy my name from something I've posted (that includes the accent over the 'A' - you've got to have that to get it to me), then paste it in the 'To' part of the message you're sending to me. If that doesn't work, then please email me at doireanne@yahoo.com. Can't wait to see your challenge!! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Amergin Date: 16 May 00 - 09:00 PM Oh, did I forget to mention that you never want to listen to me? |

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Amergin Date: 17 May 00 - 01:19 AM Well, boys and girls, here's my very feeble attempt.
Burning of the Still
Way down in Lawrenceburg
It burnt down a warehouse
The fire it crawled through the walls
20,000 barrels went up
I stood beside the Kentucky River
I jumped on down the soggy bank
I was swimming around all drunkenly
Down I sank into the rushing depths
So now I still stand upon the bank Amergin

Subject: RE: SONG CHALLENGE! Part 27 From: Spider Tom Date: 19 May 00 - 07:19 AM What Is going on? I repeat, WHAT IS GOING ON? Here we all are working our quills, till they're wobbly, and what thanks do we get? Sweet Fanny Addams, thats what, just blind ignorance. EVEN us the challengers have stopped their chatter. Aine, please forgive me, you put in so much time and effort to this challenge and what assistance do you get, you would think at the very least SOMEBODY could just drop a line to move the challenge up a notch, but NO! I found this challenge, poor No.27, broken and in tears, asking why nobody cares.,br> How could I explain that the common people(I use the term with caution)are still out there but are up to their armpits in BREAST threads. SHAME MUDCATTERS! SHAME! Or perhaps it's just the thought of all that bourbon going to waste that has driven them away. And new challengers, where are you? COME ON, HAVE A GO!,br> I am back off to the brest threads now Bye Bye. Spider Tom,Hanging by a thread. |
