I have read with interest the messages about which song/guitar/joke/banjo/mandolin/round thing with a skin that you hit, but what I would really like advice on is , when and at what age can I safely wear a cardigan. Are they suitable attire for occasional appearances at folk clubs where one might be singing or are they more acceptable as audience wear at festivals?

When to wear a cardie

1. On the run from the style police.

2. With sandals and pringle socks

3. In Val Doonicans rocking chair

4. preferably never - but then I'm just easily upset!

Other questions need to be answered first....(a) Are you, or have you ever been, a TOG? (b) are you, or have you ever been, an owner of a Morris Minor? (c) are you, or have you ever been, in a position to think lustful thoughts about Gloria Hunniford? If the answers to the above are yes,yes and yes, you may wear a cardigan at all times.....in fact, I wish you would, it will give the rest of us fair warning.

If, on the other hand, you are from the States, none of this will make the slightest sense to you and you may safely disregard it.

This thread is completely gross. Cardinals are beautiful birds and the idea of wearing on is revolting! I know they have beautiful feathers but to kill them simply to wear one is disgusting and I'd personally want no part of it. We have several mating pairs around the house and I enjoy watching them together as you never see the male without the female. Lovely birds. When to wear one? Never I say!!!

We're all folkies here, brother. When you're out with folkies (i.e., a sing-around, or a festival) you wear what you're COMFORTABLE in. In my case, it's multitudinous layers of corduroy, cotton and sometimes wool, and I gladly withstand any amount of bullying about it (HOW MANY LAYERS DO YOU HAVE ON????). I pay it no nevermind 'cause, as far as I'm concerned, warm is good, and if you need to take it off, you can jolly well take it off easier than you can put it on if you don't have it.

I was once told by my EX-wife that I was a 'fashion nematode'. And did I care??? HA!!!!

But who's bitter?? SURELY NOT ME!!!! (laughing hysterically)

Ah, springtime and the debate doth start again
The question of when to don a cardigan
Some think it better
To put on a sweater
When they hear a bombarde again.

Um, sorry.

Wear what's comfortable. A gentleman in Chicago named Harry Waller used to wear three piece suitson stage. His explaination was, "Just because I'm a folksinger doesn't mean that I have to look like I just stepped out of a bread line."

I agree with the lots of layers. I'm fairly warm most of the time (extra insulation courtesy of Cadbury) and I tell people at work, they can put more stuff on if they get cold, but if I'm hot, I can't really take much off (and I tend to wear just a thin shirt, trousers and undies.... no vests, longjohns or liberty (sic) bodices to divest) and if I did they wouldn't like it..... But cardigans??? Not since primary (grade) school. Knitted Jackets, maybe.... cardigan, NO!

(However, I do admit to having TOGlike qualities, I've always wanted a Morris Minor because my grandfather had one, but I've NEVER entertained ANY thoughts of Gloria Hunniford!)

'Spaw's correct: cardinals are beautiful birds. It seems a bit odd, though, that so many of them are going to Rome now, and at the height of the breeding season.

Spaw: you seem a little confused (Are You a TOG?)
The subject was Not Cardinals, but Cardigans.
My understanding is that these are not birds, they are a Welsh breed of dog, the Cardigan Corgi (Cor-gi = dwarf dog in Welsh). Corgis are also the Queen's preferred pets.

Yeah Liz, it is. The athletic supporter was named for a horse colonel in the 62nd Union Cavalry who was known for his frontal attacks and his balls to the wall style of attack. Col. Dick Jockstrap was killed in a charge at Antietam where his cup was ruptured by a cannonball.

brother,
It really depends what colour it is and what it is made of!
Never try wearing one with a Kaftan, it impedes movement of the arms at Ceilidhs!

Cardigans ... I seem to remember wearing them back when I started work in a bank ... about 41½ years ago. I think I had one in Presley Purple and another in brilliant red (with knitted ties and nylon socks to mix-or-match). I couldn't wear the cardigans at work, though, they clashed with the 'clerical grey' everything else (and everyone else).

I don't know whether to blame subsequent satorial habits (I'm noted for staying in short sleeves, even at the coldest Astralian National Folk Festival, in chilly Canberra) on:

Bad memories of the Cardigan era,

Australian climate in general or

Global warming.

Bob Bolton

I want to state for the record, before anyone thinks otherwise, I have not now, nor have I ever been one of those poor people who wore liberty bodices... I was told about them by a much older friend.

Why liberty? There was nothing liberating about them... or are they compared to the previous fashion garment, the corset??

And I am rather embarrased to remember wearing wet-look skirts (I suppose now I am a little incontinent and fit for wearing cardigans those wet look skirts could come in handy!) LOL :0)
Has anybody had the embarrasment I once experienced - a pair of stay up stockings that simply refused to - without any male encouragement!

What is a folk thong anyway?

A point of clarification. Does "cardigan" mean the same thing on both sides of the Atlantic. I mean "jumper" doesn't and nor does "vest."

Ther confusing thing is that the garment Lord Cardigan the Light Brigade chappie was most noted for wearing was a corset. He wore other stuff as well, mind, but I've never seen a picture of him in a cardie. (Or a Liberty Bodice, which I think he'd have seen as very wimpish.)

Nothing wrong with cardigans - I've been wearing 'em for years. Generally wear a claret-coloured job with a goose-shit green tweed suit in winter - though it's looking a bit bedraggled now, what with my darning skills being so inept.
Be out and proud, I say - bring back the cardigan from sartorial pariahdom!

Maybe the Liberty Bodice came from Liberties, the famous clothing store.
Or not
I really don't care.
I'm very upset about the cardinals going to Rome. Maybe they're going to try to get the Pope to issue a Papal Bull forbiding all good Catholics from wearing their skins.
Although why a bull would get involved with a question of fashion (or the lack of same) is beyond me. Besides, St. Louis hasn't had a good team in years. Red is a nice color (colour ?)though. My eyes were red this morning but a cup of coffee soon fixed that.
I'm cold. Where's my cardigan?
