Subject: Need sad military sounding song w/ instr From: GUEST,Beth Date: 08 Jun 01 - 06:53 PM Hi guys, I am looking to put together some sad sounding folk/instrumental songs that may have a military theme (or at least sound like they do) for a project. Folk music that has longer instrumental sections would be great. Or even pieces without words would work too. Any ideas are most appreciated!!! Thanks, Beth |

Subject: Lyr Add: LOVE FAREWELL From: Dave (the ancient mariner) Date: 08 Jun 01 - 08:31 PM Flowers of The Forest is traditional at military funerals. The Collier Recruit is another favourite of mine; and Johnny Is Gone For A Soldier too. Here's Love Farewell one I sing often... I thought I heard the Colonel crying- March brave boys there's no denying Cannons roaring- drums a beating- March brave boys there's no retreating Love farewell
If I should fall in far off battle- Cannons roar and rifles rattle
Will you go or will you tarry- will you wait or will you marry.
I thought I heard the Colonel crying- March brave boys there's no denying Yours, Aye. Dave

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: RangerSteve Date: 08 Jun 01 - 09:40 PM There are two songs on the CD songs of the Civil War. "was My Brother in the Battle" written by Stephen Foster and performed by Kate and Anna McGarragle (I'll bet I spelled their name wrong) and another whose name escapes me but the chorus ends "somebody's darling, somebody's pride, Who'll tell his mother where the boy died. The title of that ne may be "Somebody's Darling" I'd also recommend Faded Coat of Blue, recorded by the Carter Family among others, and Goodbye Maggie, recorded by the Monroe Bros., the Lilly Bros., and (okay, this is bragging) myself. Mine is out of print, I don't know about the others. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Jande Date: 08 Jun 01 - 09:48 PM When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again is a song that has intrigued me for quite a while... The lyrics seem to be almost celebratory, but the music is in a minor key and sounds dirge-like to my ear. It gives me the feeling that the writer was in some kind of denial. It always makes me feel very sad, like "Oh, sure! He's coming home alright --in a coffin!" ~ Jande |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 08 Jun 01 - 10:38 PM Beth, I'm not sure if you're interested in the words and stories of songs about war/military or something that would sound good played at a military funeral. The Navy Hymn -- Eternal Father Strong to Save I'm Bound for the Promised Land -- I heard the Marine band play this at the memorial service for Colonel Rich Higgins, the hostage executed in Lebanon. It was very moving. Finlandia --- this can be an instrumental piece or a hymn. It's patriotic sounding, not sure if it qualifies as military sounding. Any march played slowly can sound military and sad. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Billy the Bus Date: 09 Jun 01 - 07:24 AM Hi Beth, Another endorsement for "Johnny Comes Marching Home" for a trad song. For the WWII era try "Lili Marlene" you'll find it here on DT Not long post war was, "Where have all the flowers gone" springs to mind - DT link is here Eric Bogle's, "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is indeed a fine modern song - just in case it isn't listed above, the DT link is here Also the "Last Post" is a must for the finale, it can be done on guitar using "harmonics". Ummm..... Since you signed in as GUEST,Beth - the "blue clicky things" will lead you to tunes and lyics...;) Y'know lass, I reckon we have a problem finding you any appopriate "military" songs. All the "dirges" we are suggesting have a strong anti-war flavour - even the "Last Post" bugle call - and I heard that often enough in the military! Anyway.... Hope we are helping - let's know how the project goes. Sampson, CW - Sgt(Rtd) - RNZRI 678894 AKA - Sam

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: mooman Date: 09 Jun 01 - 07:26 AM Another couple of suggestions... "McCafferty" ("McCaffery" in some versions), a song about injustice between the ranks in the British army and the terrible consequences it brings to the individuals involved. Maybe also "Moreton Bay" (I have at least two versions of this) about the terrible punishments meted out to convicts round about the 1820s in a penal colony in Australia by the infamous and cruel army officer in charge (in the song he gets his fully deserved come-uppance in the end). Best of luck with the project Beth! Cheers mooman |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Tiger Date: 09 Jun 01 - 10:09 AM The Faded Coat of Blue 'Til We Meet Again |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Sorcha Date: 09 Jun 01 - 10:25 AM Isn't there a section in Copeland's "Ode to the Common Man" that sounds military? I can't remember for sure. Wonder what happened to Guest Beth? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Hillheader Date: 09 Jun 01 - 11:24 AM "Scots Wha Hae" is best done at funerial pace and would certainly fit the bill as would "The Green Fields of France". I seem to remember a song called "Farewell Manchester" about Bonnie Prince Charlie leaving the city heading north. Am I mistaken is that also very slow and mournful? Sorcha's right about "Flower of Scotland". It's murdered and loses all it's impact when it's speeded up. It's supposed to be a lament and not the chant is has become at football and rugby matches. Cannot ever recall hearing "Scotland the Brave" done slowly though and trying to run it through my head can't imagine it working. Was it ever recorded slowly? Davebhoy

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Snuffy Date: 09 Jun 01 - 12:18 PM Billy the Bus suggested 'Lili Marlene' - try also 'The D-Day Dodgers' to the same tune |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Mr Red Date: 09 Jun 01 - 12:54 PM The Old Barbed Wire. I have another version collected from the television - arguably more poignant see my site for details. cresby.com good luck with the project |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: GUEST Date: 09 Jun 01 - 02:40 PM You've had many excellent suggestions, all of them appropriate. Another tune I would suggest is the one used for " Farewell ye Banks of Sicily", Sorry , I can't remember the proper title of the song. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: bobby's girl Date: 09 Jun 01 - 03:43 PM Strawhead perform a song to the tune of the bugle call "Sunset", which would fulfil your need for instrumental bits - its on Book of England, and I think it starts "sound out the bugle" Also "I live not where I love " is sung by a soldier a long way from home. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: GUEST Date: 09 Jun 01 - 06:01 PM Keith Marsden's 'Normandy Orchards' |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Hillheader Date: 09 Jun 01 - 08:12 PM Another one is "The Ballad of James Connolly" which takes "Dark Lochnagar" as for the melody. Davebhoy |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: GUEST,gareth Date: 09 Jun 01 - 08:18 PM Ooops - finger trouble. Previously mentioned, but if you recall the film "Dr Strangelove" - "When Johny Comes Marching home" aka "Mrs Molloy" should fit. Instrumental can be inserted and it is recognised as a barrack room ballard. Gareth |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Jande Date: 09 Jun 01 - 08:44 PM Well. i'll show my ignorance here: The only version I've heard of "I Live Not Where I Love" is sung beautifully by a woman about following her man. IIRC, that is... I have it on a CD of John Renbourn's "Ship Of Fools", a thoroughly haunting album! Could there have been two songs with the same title? Or are they different versions? ~ Jande |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: mooman Date: 09 Jun 01 - 08:47 PM Perhaps also "The Banks of the Nile". Haunting song and melody. mooman |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Jun 01 - 09:23 PM "Lorena" was banned at times by both sides during the War Between The States because it made the soldiers homesick and the general feeling was it caused desertions......Now THAT is a powerful song! it's mainly identified though with the Confederacy and was probably the most heard song around southern campfires. More info, Midi, and words are HERE. The Midi they use (click on the music icon) is said to be played much as it would have been heard in southern parlors, sounding a bit thin and simplistic. Its a beautiful and haunting melody though and is wonderful on Hammered Dulcimer as well as Fiddle. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Wotcha Date: 09 Jun 01 - 09:36 PM Try also A.L. Lloyd's "Seamen's Hymn" in the DT. A short but nice sentiment but probably could be extended with an instrumental passage. "Keep the Home Fires Burning" was a popular WWI song -- not really folk but quite moving. In fact just about anything you can drag out of the play/movie "Oh what a Lovely War!" will probably be quite adapatable. Speaking of movies, "Breaker Morant" had some popular pieces of the time. Check 'em out. Cheers, Wotcha |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: Uncle Jaque Date: 09 Jun 01 - 10:18 PM That song "Somebody's Darling" is indeed a very touching, if not heart-rending song attributed, as I recall, to a Southern source. It is lyrically non-sectarian, however, and would be appropriate for about any side, any war. I have only heard it recorded on one of the old American Heritage Centennial LP albums, in which they do a very nice, although incomplete version of it. You are going to need a pretty fair vocal range if you are going to attempt it, and It would be even better if it can be done in 4-part harmony. "Somebody's Darlin'" is in the Silverman CW song book, and if you do it right, keep the kleenex (or Victorian hankies if in period) handy, as it's apt to get to ye. Someday I want to perform it at a reenactment in a Hospital-Tent theatrical vignette One we have done for Memorial Day Services in Church quite effectively is "Vacant Chair" ("We shall meet, but we shall miss him...") and one of the most oft requested around the campfire when the fires' glow wanes dim is "Tenting Tonight", which may have been one of the first American "Anti-War" songs written. Don't forget "The Picket Guard" (All quiet along the Potomac tonight..."). Aside from the traditional bugle call "Taps" and it's British counterpart "Last Post" (We are told that many US and CS Units used "Last Post" through the WBTS in stead of "Taps") there is the lovely old French (copied by the US in the 1820s) "Extinguish Lights", used as a Taps call in Artillery Units. During our last SUVCW Memorial Service here in Yarmouth, it was cold and rainy. I tried to play "Taps" on my "C" Clairon De Ordnace (French Army bugle as commonly used by Infantry in the ACW) and that cold wet mouthpiece made the high "G" pretty ragged. At the next cerimony (different cemetary) I used my wooden low-"G" flute and did "Taps" on that instead. Much quieter, but surprisingly lovely. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: bobby's girl Date: 10 Jun 01 - 01:35 PM Jande - the version of "I live not where I love" is sung by Malcolm from Strawhead, and it's definately from the soldiers point of view, but I have heard other versions of it with the words slightly altered so it could be from a woman's point of view. I tend to think of the Strawhead one as the definitive version only because it was the first one I heard and I loved it. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Need sad military sounding song w/ From: toadfrog Date: 10 Jun 01 - 05:55 PM There was a piece on NPR this morning on the late Stanley Kubrick. His wife was interviewed, and discussed an anti-war film he had directed (I don't recall the name). She had played the part of a German woman, who at the end of the film was made to sing, I believe for victorious American troops, and the song was intended to be as sad, and as evocative, as could be found. The song they played certainly works. It could easily be the most common German song; when I was in Germany, the first verse was sung all the time, it goes: Es war einmal ein treuer Hussar, der liebt' sein Maedchen ganz und gar. ein ganzes Jahr und noch viel mehr, die Liebe hat gar kein ende mehr. ein ganzes Jahr und noch viel mehr, die Liebe hat gar kein ende mehr. Subject: Lyr Add: FAREWELL TO LOCHABER From: The Walrus Date: 10 Jun 01 - 06:27 PM The obvious choices have been mentioned (and with others, I'd vote for Fowers of the Forest), but if you are after something a different, how about a Scots piece about a chap who decides his only chance of getting the girl is a neck or nothing gamble in the Army FAREWELL TO LOCHABER Farewell to Lochaber and farewell, my Jean, Where heartsome with thee, I habe many days been, For Lochaber no more, Lochaber no more, We'll maybe return to Lochaber no more. These tears that I shed, they are all for my dear, And no' for the dangers attending on war, Though borne on rough seas to a far bloody shore, Maybe to return to Lochaber no more. Though hurricanes rise and rise every wind They'll ne'er make a tempest like that in my mind. Though loudest of thunder on louder waves roar, There's nothing like leaving my love on the shore. To leave thee behind me, my heart is sair pained, By ease that's inglorious no fame can be gained, And beauty and love's the reward of the brave, And I must deserve it before I can crave, Then glory, my Jean, maun plead my excuse, Since honour commands me, how can I refuse? For without it I ne'er can have merit for thee, And without thy favour I'd better not be. I gae then, my lass, tae win honour and fame, And if I should luck to come gloriously hame, A heart I will bring thee with love running o'er, And then I'll leave thee and Lochaber no more. Also Dave(tam),
I have a different set of lyrics for "Love Farewell" (a hybrid Anglo-Irish song) , Lewis Winstock attributes this version to the 88th Foot (later the Connaught Rangers) in 1809 Walrus nb: Both songs are to be found in "Songs and Music of the Redcoats")
