Amidst the chorus of thank yous and hurray for Max and Mudcat........Let's all back up a bit and let Max take that step. Max, one of the toughest things to do in this life is to ask for help, but it has an equal.........the ability to say thanks. Those abilities are qualities that true winners possess. We are by culture taught the value of independence, so to ask for help is somehow less than admirable......Complete bullshit! The Beatles sang that "I get by with a little help from my friends," and it may be the best single line in any song they sang. Do you know what makes us all feel really great, warm and fuzzy, that feeling of pissing your pants in a dark wool suit? We all love to help somebody out!!! Is there anything that makes you feel better? Man, what a rush to know that you gave something of yourself and benefitted another human being.....simply the best! Now when YOU are the one who benefits, the hardest thing to do is to say thanks. We often should say it, but it's really uncomfortable....and it shouldn't be. Like asking for help shouldn't be either. When someone says "Double Win" and that's what we all want, it's true. Just like now, we all win!!! But a lot of us are here on this thread saying, "Oh no Max, let us thank you." Now why is that? Same reason really.......We are uncomfortable receiving thanks and want to downplay it as though it is no big deal. That's dumb. Try this scenario:
Waiter: Sir, I can't possibly take this $100. tip. It gets down to a feeling of deservedness. The many 'Catters who have donated here over the years did so because they believed and loved you and this place. Saying thank you is something you need to do even though the real thank you is keeping the 'Cat alive. But a thank you from you is the second warm-fuzzy and that tops the cake! What we should be saying here is "Max, you're welcome." That's hard to say too isn't it? When we say it, we always add qualifiers like, "No need to say thanks, the 'Cat is thanks enough."...........It may be, but it's our job to accept your thanks on this thread. Simple acceptance....very hard. This is why it's always easier to give them to receive. We all need to be able to sincerely say "Thanks" and sincerely say, "You're welcome,".....no qualifiers and no embarassment. When friends can deal on that level with each other it shows the true friendship that does indeed exist. One more thing.......You've taken two giant steps. You asked for help and you said a sincere thank you for it. NOW.....A lot of us have been harping on this one and NOW IS THE TIME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!.....Let's get something going that funds at least the minimum every month. Let's get that going now. YOU have to ask though....I mean, you're the one who will have to monitor it a bit and say thanks or "Where's your dough Spaw?" Ask us for the bread and ask for whatever help you need. We'll be warm and fuzzy because we want to help and love to help....You can get warm and fuzzy by seeing how much we all do indeed love you and this place you created.......a Double Win, and the 'Cat goes on. I was pleased to see Max's heartfelt thanks. And he is welcome. Now, as we all realize how close we came to losing this resource (and I've seen enough past thread titles that I haven't dipped into to know this isn't new) we need as individual group members to suggest possible solutions that we are able to actually assist with. For me, I see a possible solution in the writing of grants. I research grants for a university library, and can suggest places to find who would fund this kind of organization. I'm amazed that a site with the value of words, music, and interpretation isn't receiving any outside funding support. The key is for Mudcat management to learn how to fill out grant applications, to send them to precisely the right funders, and to understand exactly the strings that might be attached (in order to avoid the strings that are unpalatable). Grants are at best supplemental funding, not an occasion to stop the individual donations. In fact, grants are more frequently awarded when the recipient can demonstrate a solid donor base. Success breeds success in this form of funding. I won't go into any more detail here, it is enough to simply suggest a way to assist Max in the future. This is such a remarkable site that has been established for such good reasons that it seems to me like a shoe-in for funding! Maggie

I like that. We've talked before about the possibility of having "membership dues" for the 'Cat. For obvious reasons, nobody wants to limit the accessibility of this site to anyone. But what about setting up a "silent membership", where we could contribute on a regular basis with no special recognition and no extra privileges...except the warm fuzzy feeling that 'Spaw seems to get most reliably from urinary incontinence. At the last Hawaii Public Radio pledge drive, they started a new program of "perpetual membership". Every month a small donation to HPR is charged to your credit card...and it doesn't expire until you say so. I know that many 'Catters make their living from music and crafts and other sources that are not exactly fountains of cash. But some of us are fortunate enough to have fairly good "day jobs". If there were a way to arrange a regular monthly or quarterly CC payment to the 'Cat, I'd sign up, gladly. Personally, I would prefer doing it that way, rather than adding to the list of bills I have to remember to pay, or waiting for Max to make a very difficult appeal. No hassles, and no guilt! I do all of my bill paying, online, through my bank and can set up any payment to be automatically paid on a one time or monthly basis. It's easy to do by accessing my acct. from my own computer. You have to know the organization inside and out, so I will be the first to say that I couldn't write grants for Mudcat. At least, not with as little as I know about it. What I did for the library several years ago was to create a catalog of organizations that fund libraries. It took a while, and is in a large (one of those 5" ones) 3-ring binder. I found everything I could on each organization itself, who it's officers are, then called, emailed, wrote for, or downloaded their applications and information about who they have previously given money to. Now when the director or associate directors start looking for dollars for specific projects, out comes my catalog and they find likely sources. (It took several months to complete, in with my main job of writing various library publications). I check out those organizations to see if everything is still up-to-date, and periodically I look around to see who can be added, who must be deleted. (Reminds me that it's time to update it again. . . ).

I am currently working on a presentation to a folk song society who seems willing to help us financially. We have a meeting with them in mid-February in which the report will be presented. I intend to make this report available for download on the Mudcat. It should provide a significant percentage of the information necessary to at least get consideration from other sources. Any help in finding sources of income other than personal contributions would certainly be appreciated. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather the Library of Congress fund us than to take your money. How is what we're doing now different from what John and Alan Lomax did then? Seems to be a bit of an oxymoron to take the money of the people I'm doing this with and for. |
