Art before you accept BillDs offer check the meaning of the word "gift" in a German dictionary!

"Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes"

Just received word from the hospital and Severn that they will be releasing him home or a temporary facility tomorrow. He is a little apprehensive about being ready to go home but they are arranging for PT and home care for his wounds, etc.

That IS amazing. Thanks, Emily. I hope he gets someone in whom he likes and trusts to take care of his wounds. The personality, rapport with, and skill of a home health aide or nurse can really make a difference in recovery, not just physical but otherwise, too.

That's great news! Not only does it mean they are happy with the way you are healing Sev (though you may not FEEL that good yet) it also means that you are away from all those sick people with their nasty bugs.

It also means you can heal at your own rate (probably faster) and not be woken up early if you don't want to be.

Lots of BIG HUGS

I'd say - and not only because my wife works in rehab - that he'd probably be better off in a transitional care facility for a week or two. Home health is generally there for only an hour or two a day, and my (unfortunate) experience with them is that many don't have a super-high level of technical skills. Burn care is hard.

Besides, look at his record.

Stick him in a temporary "facility" and do it quickly, with facility. Right now he has all his faculties, or many of them, and a facile hand will help him keep what he has.

Regardless of faculties or facilities, I think artbrooks has it down, factually, as in fact he speaks from second-hand experience.

And, for that, I present a present of the sound of one hand clapping.

You can't get the clap from one hand. Of course, you never know where that hand has been, so, maybe.

Subject: RE: BS: Severn Injured...Good thoughts, please

Surely, then an actual ovation, as a matter of fact, might produce the clap en masse?

Wouldn't less mass be either a smaller crowd or fewer church services? Oops, with less mass we'd have less gravity and we'd all float aw

Is that close?

I'm with Art, Sev.   It's good news that you're healing fast enough for them to kick you out of that nasty ol' hospital with the germs and all (and people waking you up every hour or so, e.g., to give you a sleeping pill), but rehab at home can be difficult, especially without 24-hour care available. If they can't let you recoup in a rehab center for a while (given the way our US "health care system" works), I do hope you have lots of people who can come by as needed to help you out with things at home - including the PT and OT people.

Does Maryland allow medical marijuana? And would that help anyway?

I hope our horrible puns are making you feel right at home in the meantime.

Genie

Hate to be practical but has anyone cleaned Sev's kitchen since the accident?I suspect that is not a mess he should be coming home to. Hope he goes to a emporary facility where he can get round the clock care. But I am still amazed that he is ready to leave the Burn Center at all.

Sev, the hospital (and more importantly the insurance company) have a responsibility to provide a safe discharge. For anyone who lives alone this means that they have the option to discharge to a temporary care facility to assist in the transition. Having friends stop in is not the same as care when you needed it. If you ask there is a good chance it can be provided.

Take care of yourself -- for you and for all of us as well...
Tinker

I have debated posting my comments on "the move", and I have discussed same by PM with several Mudcatters. I have come to the conclusion that, even though it's none of my business, and even though I may be posting upsetting comments, it is better that I post. Not for Severn's sake in particular, but for all those who may find themselves in similar circumstances.

I will try to be as brief as possible, so many details will be left out.

SOMEtimes, medical care providers want to "move" a patient and they may have many and varied reasons.

The patient may be under the influence of drugs and/or, more importantly, under the influence of not wanting to upset the medical care givers. Not upsetting the apple cart extends to the advocate(s) for and to the family(s) of the patient.

My experiences indicate that a thorough discussion involving the patient, the patient's advocate(s) and family(s), transitional care facilty personnel or extramural care personnel, and the patient's doctor (GP, family doc) is needed.

Ya gotta make sure everyone is on the same page. I have seen screwups that should not have happened. I lost my business because of such a screwup.

Having said all that, my post and others are no more than conjecture as no details have been posted. I am sure Sev and his advocate(s) and family(s) will make sure he is okay.

Good thoughts and well intended gnu. I think many of us are concerned. Severn was expecting a six week stay in hospital. Proper nutrition will be critical to his healing. Infection still has to be a worry. That singed kitchen is at the top of my list.

That was the principal of the grade school I attended: Mother Merry. The school was Sts. Delilah and Jezebel Grade School and was taught by the Sisters of the Divine Figure. There were Sister Trixie La Boom, Sister Venus en Fourrures, Sister Justine de la Vertue, Sister Juliette les Prospérités and others who molded my mind and those of so many other children.

Good news!

I spoke to Severn just as he was about to be transferred to a rehab facility; when the nurse heard I was ringing from the UK she let him remain for a few more minutes to chat.

He will post the address here as soon as he is able and says to thank everyone for the wonderful cards from all over the place.
