Subject: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 From: Zany Mouse Date: 24 Aug 09 - 05:45 PM I'm THINKING of organising a mini fest in Worksop next Spring or summer. I stress it's only at the thinking stage at the moment. My thoughts are for taking over the local rugby club where we could have indoor camping and the more regular kind of camping. From, say, Friday night to Sunday night. Food would be available from the club and the bar would be at club prices (always a good idea!). I might even manage to organise a hog roast on the Saturday night. As to music, I was thinking of mainly singarounds/music sessions with possible 'spots' for the braver members. This will be a fund raising event and I was thinking of a possible entrance of £10 for the weekend. I would welcome any input Catters have to offer. at the moment it sounds like a simple idea - maybe too simple - so I might be deluding myself! lol Blessings Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 From: Zany Mouse Date: 24 Aug 09 - 05:58 PM Sorry Dick. Worksop, near Sheffield, UK |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 From: My guru always said Date: 24 Aug 09 - 06:08 PM Sounds wonderful Rhiannon! Lots of work but I'm sure you'll have lots of helpers! The really difficult thing will be deciding dates, there's just so much going on that clashing is inevitable. Good luck Honey! |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 From: John J Date: 24 Aug 09 - 06:09 PM Not too simple an idea at all! Depending on the actual date I would be very interested in attending. My preference would be for a strong traditional song & music bias, along with lots of decent ale. John |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 From: Zany Mouse Date: 24 Aug 09 - 06:20 PM Not sure what ale will be on but I hope they will get a guest beer or two in. I know the bar is cheap though. As to the music content ... well I hope and expect that it will be a good mix. After all, as it is singaround based weekend, then the content will be down to whoever is singing. So I'll put you down for trad stuff? (grin) As to the date - sadly it is a smallish window of April to August (between rugby seasons). Hils: Can I count Richard and yourself in? Please, pretty please? Room for the caravan! Blessings Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: theleveller Date: 25 Aug 09 - 03:18 AM That certainly sounds interesting Rhiannon - I'm sure we (Whipstaff) would be interested, depending on dates. You should also get in touch with local folkies like Ray Hearne from Rotherham (I can ask him if you like). |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: stallion Date: 25 Aug 09 - 03:20 AM get in touch with Proff Ron from Sheffield University |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Sooz Date: 25 Aug 09 - 03:21 AM Gainsborough Folk Club will be interested! Keep us informed. |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Cath Date: 25 Aug 09 - 06:17 AM It might be best to avoid the first weekend of May (Wath) the second (Holmfirth) and the third (Shepley). There may well be others on those weekends but those are the ones that I know of in shouting distance of Worksop. Cath |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Catherine Jayne Date: 25 Aug 09 - 07:40 AM Sounds good Rhiannon. Keep us up to date with plans and dates and hopefully we'll be able to make it! Khatt |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: jeddy Date: 25 Aug 09 - 09:22 PM we would come. we love worksop, in fact stopping there on our way home. now for the important question.... did you give us money when we busked there alot? lol ;) you would have to get some security, with it being so close to town. but the dogs love the stream running through the middle of the site. count us in take care all jade x x x x |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: MoorleyMan Date: 26 Aug 09 - 08:48 AM I've just PMd you Rhiannon. Best of luck, and keep me posted! |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: John J Date: 26 Aug 09 - 09:14 AM Most of May is out for me, except perhaps the 2nd Bank Holiday. That coincides with the rather excellent Norwell Happening near Newark which is exactly the type of event as your proposed festival is described. Good luck with it..and keep us all informed - we need more events like this. John |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Carol Date: 26 Aug 09 - 09:56 AM Hi There Sounds a great idea - I think you'll find that Norwell has changed to the first to the first BH weekend next year as the Moor and Coast festival finished this year. LOL Carol |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Zany Mouse Date: 26 Aug 09 - 06:33 PM Thanks to everyone who PMed me. The interest is certainly there! I'll get back to you all in a few days Blessings Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 26 Aug 09 - 07:03 PM Can you take SHEFFIELD off this thread your festival is planned for WORKSOP which isn't even in Yorkshire. |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Zany Mouse Date: 26 Aug 09 - 07:08 PM I didn't put Sheffield in! If you look at my post above you will see that I said WORKSOP, NEAR SHEFFIELD, which it is. Joe or Joe Clone, can you change the heading please? Thanks Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: greg stephens Date: 26 Aug 09 - 07:18 PM MCFat seems to be being unnecessarily Yorkshirist. Workshop is obviously near Sheffield, and that is the way anyone would describe it to someone from away. Let's face it, Worksop is in Nottinghamshire, and it's near Sheffield. Hathersage is in Derbyshire, and it's near Sheffield. There, I've written the dreadful facts out. It hasn't given me apoplexy. Good luck with the festival! |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 26 Aug 09 - 07:22 PM No need to get too uptight MC Fat. Worksop does have a Sheffield postcode.... (I see the help forum is down just now, so maybe Joe and the clones are on their hols?) |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Howard Jones Date: 27 Aug 09 - 03:47 AM On the important subject of beer, my experience of playing gigs in rugby clubs is that they often don't stock cask beer outside the playing season, because they can't sell enough of it and it's hard to keep. If you want real ale, make sure you discuss it with them beforehand. |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: John J Date: 27 Aug 09 - 03:55 AM A very valid and important point Howard. It would be dreadful to turn up at a festival to find they only served fizz. John |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Carol Date: 27 Aug 09 - 05:51 AM Perhaps it might be 'worth' PM ing Joe asking him to change it, after all there is already a Sheffield FF! |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 27 Aug 09 - 06:55 AM sorry for being a bit 'precious' but I answered that after a heavy few days at Whitby. The thing is as has been said there already is a Sheffield FF which is just going to be a session festival this year (more of that later. All thebest with your planning. |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: daughter Date: 27 Aug 09 - 08:38 AM Sounds GREAT Rhiannon - well done, as soon as you know dates let us know and hopefully we'd be able to come,if not help out! Russ is from Sheffield and always had lots of local folkie contacts I'll ask him further opinions. We could, of course supply some of the wonderous Red Fox Brewery beer! Because Russ comes up "home" fairly often, it wouldn't be difficult to arrange beer delivery. He sometimes does swaps with Kelham Island brewery in Sheffield - maybe your venue would be prepared to have some guest cask ales..... Cheers Alie |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Zany Mouse Date: 27 Aug 09 - 12:47 PM Well I've had so many PMs of support I think I'm going to go for it. Thanks to everyone who has offered support - I'll be in touch. I'll need as much help as is willingly given. Blessings Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Sheffield UK From: Backwoodsman Date: 27 Aug 09 - 01:29 PM Count me in too, Rhiannon. I guess Sooz will pas stuff on to me. BTW - I don't give a FF what beer's on, I absolutely won't be drinking it. I do like Yorkshire Tea though! :-) :-) |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Aug 09 - 01:35 PM Peter K (Fionn) tells me that it would be better to have Worksop than Sheffield in the thread title, so I changed it. If that's not correct, please contact me. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Zany Mouse Date: 27 Aug 09 - 02:45 PM That's perfect. Thanks Joe |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: My guru always said Date: 27 Aug 09 - 05:42 PM This all sounds wonderful Rhiannon!! Will definitely be up for it depending on dates. Keep up the good work Girlie & let me know if there's anything I can do. Oh, and snatch Russ's hand off about the Red Fox beer, it's VERY nice! |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: The Doctor Date: 28 Aug 09 - 03:49 AM Depending on the actual dates I'd be interested, in coming, performing, doing a session, a spot. I also tried running a mini festival in Leeds a couple of years back, not with too much success I must add, but I'd happily share those experiences with you. |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: GUEST,OldNicKilby Date: 28 Aug 09 - 05:05 AM Go for it ,if its anywhere as good as Moira it will be a little cracker, Count us, Young No More, in. Best of luck |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Paul Burke Date: 29 Aug 09 - 04:28 AM Though Worksop itself is rather less than prepossessing- at least the centre of town from the canal- the site (if I've got the right rugby club, on Stubbins Lane) would appear to offer a good balance between isolation and accessibility- with the prospect of some fine walks along the canal up to Shireoaks and Turnerwood. A rugby pitch should be big enough to allow a second tent (if anyone's got a large gazebo/ little marquee) for minority tastes or special interests. |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Zany Mouse Date: 29 Aug 09 - 07:01 AM What a great idea Paul. A gazebo/marquee could be provided very easily. What I would love to achieve is something akin to Wareham Wail, Miskin or Dog Days. Hey, that's a good idea! Admiral, do you fancy coming and doing your sily but wonderful fine system? Blessings Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Zany Mouse Date: 30 Aug 09 - 11:46 AM Great Jane. Erm ... does that mean you will float down the canal? The Rugby Club is on the bank. Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: GUEST,Guest, Olga J Date: 05 Oct 09 - 05:20 AM Hi there Depending on when it is we would be interested in attending as a group (Whats the Point). You can look us up on whats-the-point.co.uk. We played for both the ceilidh and the concert at Moira Furnace, a new festival this year, and are looking to play at small festivals next year (if possible in exchange for camping). Contact details are on the website. Good luck Olga |

Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: muppitz Date: 05 Oct 09 - 07:59 AM Might be worth avoiding a clash with Gate to Southwell, as well as the other festivals mentioned above! muppitz x |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Polkaman Date: 05 Oct 09 - 08:01 AM Hi I live just down the road from worksop and remember the Mallard Folk club well in the 1980's. We really had something going then Lots of good players and some well known and well loved singers then. It would be nice to have reunion session at the mallard if possible How about it and Kenny Tweed where are you, Polkaman |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Aeola Date: 05 Oct 09 - 02:59 PM The Traditions Fest ( 4 Fools ) has finished so the w/e of 25th June 2010 could be a viable option. We would be interested, Bob & Pam |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: stallion Date: 05 Oct 09 - 04:07 PM oh I might get 2BS&S out for a sing |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Zany Mouse Date: 05 Oct 09 - 07:26 PM Thanks for all the responses. I'm in negotation with the Rugby Club at the moment and will be back with some possible dates. May, I think, it just too full of other fests to make it viable but June or July seem to be good. Blessings Rhiannon |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: foggers Date: 05 Oct 09 - 09:17 PM We would defo be up for this - singing, playing, stewarding, whatever....count us in! |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: MoorleyMan Date: 06 Oct 09 - 05:08 AM I've just found out that the York Folk Weekend will likely be on 5th/6th June next year, to avoid late spring Bank Hol - so it would be good to avoid clashing with that. |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Acorn4 Date: 06 Oct 09 - 05:59 AM I think you should just pick a week and go ahead whatever - unless you do it in the midddle of January there just aren't enough weeks for the number of Festivals. I'd like to add my recommmendation for "What's the Point" - they are a very versatile band and would be an asset to any festival. |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: GUEST,BBP at work Date: 06 Oct 09 - 07:18 AM You can get a taste of What's the Point at Gainsborough Folk Festival on 16th & 17th October - in the beer festival venue!. See www.gainsboroughfolkclub.com Deirdre |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: jeddy Date: 06 Oct 09 - 07:39 AM i think there are only two festies you need to worry about clashing with as they are local ones. belper and southwell. how are things looking, any news? i can't wait for next summer, looking forward to meeting you all. take care all jade x x x x |
Subject: RE: POSSIBLE Folk Festival 2010 Worksop UK From: Zany Mouse Date: 06 Oct 09 - 12:06 PM Thanks again, everyone. I've also had a huge response in PMs which is very encouraging. I take your point, Jade, about the two local fests. Any idea of their dates please? Blessings Rhiannon |
